After reading stories and browsing at Thumbie's photos of the recently concluded 2007 DOT 24 Hours MTBike Challenge, I believe, Emmanuel Alibangbang deserves the "AGAINST ALL ODDS" Award, though not official, it would be great to give this person the much deserved recognition on what he has done to defend his title. I know that there were solo riders without support who raced but the guy is the "only one" who raced with the bare minimum essentials strapped on a small plywood platform attached to his handlebar. Man, that's something. Not to mention it's an additional weight to his already heavy rig. He wasn't able to defend his title but he still finished the race on top spot. I'm thinking of giving this man (in fact, I will give this man) a decent fork to use in his upcoming races. If we can help to send Dandan to race international, we could definitely help another soul to race local, decently. Thumbie, if you are reading this, baka pwede pa ihabol yung award and make it official. And thanks for a great race! I'll post my own account of the race soon.

There was a saying "Huli man daw at magaling, huli pa rin." (trans: Better late than never). I apologized for my late post, I was very busy at work since I came back. Here's my story. There was an upcoming typhoon when I left Hong Kong to Join the DOT 24H MTB Challenge to be held in NBP Land Reserve in Muntinlupa. Storm Signal No. 3 was already hoisted on the day I was supposed to leave and after 2 attemps to board the ferry with my bike and my gear bag for an early check-in at Hong Kong Station, the rain will just pour like mad whenever I am about to leave the house for the 15 minutes walk (with the bike and gear bag) to the ferry pier. Are these signs that I shouldn’t go? Frustrating it was, I left the house to go to work. My gear was brought by a friend to the City check-in counters later that day. I have too much apprehension before I finally decide to join this race. I was only 3-week old in my new job when I have to take a total of 3.5 day-off from my work to ride my bike in this event. I’m trying to fit this race in my schedule since May, and I tried to delay to start in my new job as long as I could when the race schedule was postponed to a later date. I was just lucky to struck a deal with my new boss that I would join his team as long as I will have that vacation in August to race the 24H event. So it is a ‘rain or shine’ commitment for me. I cannot afford another change in schedule. This event should push through as scheduled or I’m doomed. It was a very nice warm weather when I arrived in Manila Thursday night at 11pm. I was hoping it will hold until race day so everybody will have some fun. The day before the race, had to do a quick shopping at Hans Gee for a much needed Bike Lighting System and some race clothing. Afterwards, me and my partner Lex Evangelista have to meet another team mate Jong Narciso at Speedy Bagal for the final arrangement of transpo, food, etc., and drank a bit with the boys there. Come race day, we lost our way going to the race venue and arrived a bit late that morning. With only coffee for breakfast, we set up our pit fast and prepare for the race as fast as we could only to hear that the race is about to start when we were still far from being ready. Still with no breakfast, we had to do the familiarization lap where we got lost on the last section before the stream crossing with some other riders of course. We manage to stuff ourselves with hardboiled eggs, some bananas and biscuits as our lone pit crew try to prepare a decent breakfast for the three of us. And the race is on. The first lap was hell without proper food and hydration not to mention the mid day heat. At this point I was already praying for some rain or even a little bit. I could already feel my legs cramping half way through the lap. I have to stop at the pit before checking in for a GU gel hoping my legs will recover quick. It was after the second lap that we were able to eat breakfast in the middle of the afternoon and our lunch would come at around 4pm. But after the second lap it was all fun till the end. I managed to do 18 laps and 18 bottles of beer for it’s a “1 lap-1 beer” policy in our camp. What can I do? I just can’t resist the ice cold beer handed over by our lone pit crew after each lap. I was surprised I still manage to finish at the middle of the solo category at 26th place out of 54 riders. I was thinking, I could still do better, bag more laps if I could be just more serious. But who wants to be serious, hehehe….. The race was fun. It was fun riding along with PinoyMTBiker people, finally meeting the guys in person, and chatting with them after a tiring lap. It was indeed an excellent weekend of racing. A perfect time to be with a good company. Congrats to Thumbie for such another great event. August 14, I arrived in Hong Kong safe and sound. It was a cloudy day with occasional rain showers. Got myself quickly at the the baggage claim to wait for my baggages. One by one, my checked-in items come into view. First a small plastic bag containing all the supplement I use on a race which I was forced to check in coz bawal daw sa cabin. (Note: in Hong Kong, I was allowed to have it in my hand carried backpack. In Manila, one person even suggested that I drink the 2 cans of redbull rather than leave it with them.) Then my gear bag. I was just waiting for my bike to show up and I’m ready to go. Minutes passed but there was no bike in view. The last piece of baggage from PR306 flight was already been claimed. Then I realized that my bike was missing! I quickly filed a report at the desk and after waiting anxiously, I saw my bike being rolled to where I was standing. What a great relief. At the end of the day, it was another great race with great people. An event worth coming home for. I’ll be back next year, God willing, hoping to do more serious run. I just hope there will be a separate category for 40 years old and above by then. The younger solo riders has an unfair advantage against us in the same category. Well, honestly, I am hoping for a multi-day race next year in the like of La Ruta , 3 days of racing which will end up at the beach. See you all next year! Also, Here's the bunch of PinoyMTBiker people I've met before and during the 24H Race... At the PinoyMTBiker Pit...Bruce - finally, hehehe... Papa Owen Tolits GBB Batutabs Arnold Radical Paul Jon Pete Doc Jason Doc Kate Tofi Sup Ronald Arnel Raul Hyperion And the other bicolanos at the pit Sir Arci and to those I wasn't introduced formally...Wifi Goku Kaloi Ka Verong Jaymz - I thought you weren't there, I learned from Sixto that you meet later on saturday or sunday. Sayang, dehins tayo nagkita. At the transition area...Ramon - nice to see you in person, finally we've met. Goyo - shook hands with him while talking to Ramon. And along the trail...Boyok - when I heared the "Banny, Is that you?", I know it's you. I remember the voice. Nice to see you again at the race. Lansky - I believe we bumped on each other at the last uphill before the transition area on sunday. Some other PinoyMTBiker riders I see along the trail - I remembered asking some guys on the side of the trail, resting or fixing something, if everything is OK. Another PinoyMTBiker guy who's actually in front of me who crashed after the small dip on the trail during one of the night laps. Good thing everything was OK as he landed on the grass instead of the rocks beside the trail. At FAREN RACING/Estor/Speedy Bagal Pit Stop...Boy Siojo (seacid) Ricky Pineda (krx) Israel "Cho" Dee Jay Teodoro (puregutz) Jong Sunga (Alphajong) GTU Randall (T-Doll) And a bunch of guys who stayed and drank with us until 4am... ;D I also meet the following at Speedy Bagal before the race... Rickshox Roman And to those whom I forgot to mention, It was nice meeting you all. ;D ;D ;D Until next year!

hi PinoyMTBiker friends, enjoyed so much reading bee's/account's personal account of the race .guess we would like to share to you another one .this time from a team's point of view , as chronicled by Team Sadik's Doji Ferrer a couple of days after the race.so here it goes : Dear Friends, Our fearless Team Captain designated me as the Team Narrator.......... Of course, the race (preparation) started weeks ahead but I would say pushed to high gear on Friday afternoon. Jawy picked up Aying (who biked from Canlubang!) and they proceeded to do some grocery shopping – Gatorade, noodles and other stuff. They also passed by Knoll’s, who was kind enough to lend his Mitsu Strada pick-up. It turned out that it was the ideal transpo because of the high ground clearance (the camping ground had some “araro” marks we had to clear) and can carry 3 bikes easily. On race morning, all three of us went for some chow at the Saturday Tiangge/market near my place and loaded up with lugaw and puto then proceeded to the race grounds. Webunked with Team Santa Rosa Bikehauz which Jawy pre-arranged. I would say Bikehauz had the best real state on the grounds – adjacent to the start/finish line and just across the organizer’s tent! Bikehauz sort of “adopted” Team Sadik and other Santa Rosa riders including Rey T. Of course, I would say Rey T hanged around the Bikehauz tent because of the umbrella babes..... The atmosphere was great because of the sheer volume of participants – more than 50 teams and 30 individual entries, and because of the diversities of the competitors (from all- steel bikes with make-shift derailleur protectors courtesy of Chow King to the latest Titus / Ellsworth units). On the downside, the registration was not flawless as each team was asked to fill up a form again even if you sent your registration form through email. The race started around 12:40pm after the mandatory welcome remarks from the DOT and the Bilibid representatives. It was a Le Mans start.......... All 50+ participants running at least 500 meters to the start/finish line to get their bikes and pedal on. Jawy, despite his stiff (carbon??) soled shoes started for the team and immediately picked his way through the starting line mayhem. The course length was 5.5 km (CCW flow) - from the start line around 500m of rough country road followed by 800m of fast downhill tarmac (best place to catch your breath). Then you enter a village construction area where you do an 800m climb on graded soil (easy when you are fresh, grueling at 4am in the morning after hours on the saddle). This section changed as the race progressed!!! - depending on the construction manager, we were rerouted at least 3 times! Fun starts after the construction site courtesy of 1.5km single track with 1.5m “talahib” surrounding you - only a few sections where you can overtake. The start of the next section is marked by a 20-foot drop, no brainer at daytime – can be fatal in total darkness. Then you pedal through a plateau for about 1.5 km and descend to the “buhat bike” section. Of course what goes down, must go up. By this time your are only some 500m from the start finish line but you have one last challenge ahead of you – a 50 m very steep mountain goat climb! Then it’s a sprint to the start/finish/transition line where everybody is required to dismount and flash your ID in order for your lap to be counted. Our team strategy was to do 1 lap each – adrenaline was high and everybody wanted to be on the saddle. This strategy (average of 19 mins per lap) kept the gap between us and the top runners to a minimum. By 6:30pm it was getting dark and everybody was required to install headlights and blinkers. Our first lap out with the lights was literally an adjustment period.... as in we had to adjust our lights every now and then because rocks on the country road would jar the lights out of alignment – nothing electrical tape, double sided tape and a couple of zip ties would fix. By 7:30pm, the 1 lap strategy was wearing us down so we decided to shift to a 2 lap per person strategy. This would give each person at least 40 minutes to rest in between runs - enough to get massages c/o our echanic/masseuse. We later conceded that 40 minutesof rest was not enough rest so we shifted to 3 laps per rider by around 10pm. In theory 3 laps would give your two teammates around 2 hours of rest. In reality, you would need 20 minutes after each run to cool down, refuel (adobo rice and carbonara), hydrate, change to dry clothes (temperature in the low 20’s at night!) and get a massage (optional) and another 20 minutes to “wake up” and prepare at the transition area for your next run. This means you get only close to 1 hour of sleep after each run! I estimate that each of us got only a maximum of 3 staggered hours of sleep on race night!! We used beach chairs in lieu of camping mats and tents used by other competitors which further deprived us of restful sleep. During the night, our riding time increased to 24.5 minutes per lap. Of course we expected it to increase due to lower visibility and fatigue but what we did not anticipate was the “hamog” factor. It completely changed the way you attack the course specially the “talahib” single track portion making it very slippery. The helmet-mounted light became very critical – unfortunately I had to replace/reconfigure mine at least 3 times before I can get an acceptable set-up. Fortunately, we did not have any major mishap at night - except forJawy (unfortunately) who had to say sayonara to his bike after one of the women competitors decided to stop at the bottom of the big drop section – as Jawy said “my saddle kissed my helmet”.... Another factor we had to contend with during the night ride was loneliness. I would estimate that most of the solo riders decided to sleep at night and 40% of the team competitors did the same. This lessened the people on the tract significantly and if you’re the time who has images of Freddie Kruger, etc. then you better stay put in the campsite. Some teams decided to ride together specially the ones with the women riders. By 5:15 am, the sun came out (thankfully) and lifted the spirits of the competitors. Despite the lack of sleep, we were pumped up again – I guess we were thinking that there the end to our suffering is just 6 hours away! At this point my butt was so sore from trail pounding and refused to get on my hardtail again. Good thing I brought my Heckler as an emergency bike. Using the Heckler was heaven to my butt - If my butt could speak, it would say thank you! I set up the coil spring and pro pedal very stiff so I only had 2 inch of rear wheel travel – just enough to pamper my rear end while traversing the rocky bits but still very efficient in pedaling. I was able to bring down my lap times back to 20 mins – Heckler forever!! By the end of the race our tally sheet said we did 63 laps or an equivalent of 346.5 kms. Putting it in perspective, we could have reached Baguio biking if we took turns doing it. 28 of those laps were done in pitch dark conditions. We did it as a team – 21 equal laps each, no more, no less (except the extra running our Team Captain did!!). We consumed 8 – 2 liter bottles of Gatorade, 10 bottles of rush energy drink, 5 gallons of water, one pot of adobo rice, one pot of carbonara, 16 bananas, 4 apples, 4 pears, 18 energy bars, 20 energy gels, 3 instant noodles, etc. This excludes food given to us by Bikehaus (ie. beef tapa, Doritos, etc.) and Gatorade+ buko pie from Rey T. We were told that we that we are in the top 9 – no official posted results yet. Our goal was to be in the top 10 and if the results are final then we definitely achieved our goal. If there was an Executive Division then we are surely in the top 3. Will we do it again? If Jawy and Aying will be going then I’m in......but it would surely be more fun if Team Tbyk and Team DG would join the fun as well......our experience and learnings from the last race will definitely help us all. So please mark your 2008 calendars, you have 12 months to prepare.... Thanks again to all your support!
