Its a very good rd. Its shifts very smoothly, lighter and very quiet compared to the 07. I had some ghost shifting but i think it was caused by my new shifter and rd. After a quick adjust from extreme, the ghost shift was gone. Ill try it again next time.

Considering that you've used, and abused, and put to toughest test your 07 XTR RD extensively... And you are as objective as to evaluate newly purchased 08 XTR RD as shifting very smoothly, lighter, and very quiet compared to 07... This 'shadow' says much about this 08 State of the Art - over and above 07 XTR RD. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I haven't had any problems with my '07, but I'm itching to upgrade to the "shadow". It weighs at a scant 189 grams compared to 197 grams ('07), hehehe 8 whole grams ;D (source: Competitive Cyclist) Are you building a new bike?

Yes schwinng. I am building a new bike lately that is why I am pretty active asking knowledgeable PinoyMTBiker questions on latest 2008 state of the art goodies.
This all started when Boredmdrider test rode 2008 Trek Fuel EX 9.5 at Bootleg last September. He was so impressed with EX 9.5's performance to the point that he concluded "Trek finally hit the nail right smack on the head this time." Just like jr, I am a 'semper fi' all american boy guddyah guddy-yah Bush TREK lover and loyalist. So last Oct 1st, I didn't waste no time and ordered from Trek Wisconsin 2008 Trek Fuel EX 9.5 (frame only). Trek replied and said "EX 9.5 (frame) will be available for delivery at the earliest Dec 15 but no later than Jan 15."
Flipnidaho gave a favorable review on WH-M965 Shimano XTR wheelset. I didn't hesitate to buy 2007 Shimano XTR (WH -M975) to replace standard Bontrager Race X Lite Disc wheelset that comes OEM on 08 Trek Fuel EX 9.5.
Of course there was this lively discussion here regarding advantages and disadvantages of whether to get Shimano 2008 XT or 2007 XTR drivetrain. Since frame I got is Trek Fuel EX 9.5, it behooves me to get 2007 Shimano XTR drivetrain for it as standard OEM. Not 08 Shimano XT drivetrain that is installed on EX 9.0. And to put screeching halt to 08 XT and 07 XTR discussion, I decided to swap 07 XTR RD and bought 08 XTR 'shadow' RD at scant 8 whole grams lighter. Hehehe. Levi said "its a very good rd" anyways. Not economical...true. But at my geriatric age with buckoo lifetime savings, I might as well toss thriftiness to the wind. To realize, this may be last bike upgrade I will be doing at sixtyish. So I might as well live true to my senior citizen cadillac stature by travelling light, plush, and smooth.
So whatelse did I change from EX 9.5 OEM? Oh yes. I chose Exustar Pedal E-PM25Ti at measly 110 grams compared to shimano's XTR clipless pedal at 245 grams.
Another point of contention lately is whether to get Avid Carbon or 2008 Shimano hydro brakeset? No problemo here since Trek Fuel EX 9.5 comes standard with Avid Juicy Ultimates as OEM. I chose Avid Juicy Ultimate over 2008 Shimano XTR hydro brakeset instead.
I dared to defy Trek's 2008 OEM choice of Fox Talas RLC 90-130mm fork travel and chose instead same 08 Fox Talas RLC (aftermarket with warranty), but with 100-120-140mm increments. So what if color of 100-140mm Fox Talas RLC fork is titanium gray vs Trek's OEM 90-130mm color coordinated black? Am not much into dizzy technocolor circus of specialized nuts and bolts anyways. As long as bike lives simple and true to rugged performance outdoors, mud, shite, dents, and scratches are fine by me.
As for seapost, stem, handlebar, I will conform with Trek's OEM choice of Bontrager's XXX Lite carbon componentries. They look outwordly good matching Trek's EX 9.5 OCLV 110 stiff yet lithe frame.
Tires are Kenda Nevegal's 2.1 front and 1.95 rear.
Seat is any 08 Selle Italia that fits my butt comfy and to the tee.
Headset is Cris King (black) in lieu of EX 9.5 Cane Creek.
Griplock is Salsa Juegos del Fuego.
That's about it Schwinng...I guess. I learn lots just by reading animated PinoyMTBiker postings.

Wow, well you must know that Jr. and I differ in our political pov, but we breathe and bleed cycling. Your build is awesome. XTR is a great choice, especially the "shadow" rd. The XTR wheelset is lighter than the '07 Crossmax SLRs. Hey being a veteran you deserve the best. I can't wait to see it completed. I'm sure it'll be posted and be admired by all of us here.

For other parts of the bikes, I like the carbon parts. But not in the RD, So many X0 user have a bad experience of braking their black box... ;( Carbon is not good for this appication... Designer consider the weight but sacrifice the durability of the parts...

Wow!!! Indeed Rocky, Fantastic bike specs you got there! How heavy is it in its totality? must come in sub 25 lbs?! I agree, no holding back na!

grnhrnt sir,
Hala. Bira. No holding back na. Tira na lang ng tira.
I venture to guess no more than 26 lbs. If it does, I will be damned. I cannot compromised 08 Fox Talas RLC at 4.1 lbs to something lighter naman.
I can safely assume more on 25+ lbs?
Unless I fool myself by being a weight weenie, I can always swap to lighter than Kenda Nevegal tires and go lower at 24.5 + lbs. Sino linoloko ko? Si ako? You know I am centuries beyond biking around villages and city parks and living rooms.
When we avid PinoyMTBikers invest on long travel trail/all mountain bikes, live up to the hype and marvel biking on gnarliest of trails accordingly.
Enough said. My high blood (loss of patience) is shooting up again.
Why if you care to ask?
Because it took me all these 4 years grnhrnt from last time we met as newbies to graduate from 80-100mm front and 3 inches rear to measure up to today's 5 inches fork travel. For XC trails we regularly frequent, 80 mm travel will suffice.
Lo and behold. I see newbies just learning to ride going at 5 inches of travel. Do they know how to maximize at 5' when they could hardly tame 3'?

buknoy, Bongjumper has a point. If indeed, 'shadow' carbon RD dissipates on trails, which it shouldn't because of design and sort, we can always install 2007 xtr RD anew and everything should be fine and dandy. For the meantime that 'shadow' RD is hanging on, we are enjoying fully how it "works very well, very smooth shifting and precise and accurate" as per your evaluation. Win-Win po ito. enzo, Hay naku if only I can unravel how my heartbeat has been skipping erratically lately due to excitement and anticipation of this high fever we call 'upgraditis', huge 16 year old never been kissed crush we both harbor for Trek bikes is to blame. Ewan ba? Mine on Trek borders on fanaticism. As some of us here go 'gaga' on Ibis Mojo's and Ellsworth Epiphany's and Giant Maestros, Titus Moto Lite's and anything Specialized. Seriously. This 2008 Trek Fuel EX 9.5 better show up mid- January or else I will be one sick PaPi.

Papi Rocky, Delivery date will be delayed daw until mid Feb. ;D ;D ;D I got my 2008 Scott Scale frame after 3 months...first they said end of Sep. then end of Oct. then mid Nov. and it came on the last week of November. During those times of waiting, I have to contend myself by checking it's availability on Scott's website every now and then and thinking of which "lightweight" part to install. "Kakaluko" to wait... That XTR Shadow RD is indeed "excellente"...

Only kidding lang pala eh. I thought kasi you get better scoop overthere at Dubai. Every little update helps.
I based my mid-Dec to mid-Jan delivery date from reply of Trek Wisconsin thanking me for ordering 2008 Trek Fuel EX 9.5. They added it is worth the wait because the bike is that good.
Anyways, moment your friend in Dubai receives his same Trek (bike) order first, kindly PM me at once. Thanks.

Anyways, moment your friend in Dubai receives his same Trek (bike) order first, kindly PM me at once. Thanks. Papi, The Aluminum version coming from Asia is already in the market all over the world, including Phils. I"ve been in contact with Trek Dubai since late October. But, the season there starts by Late September which is the introduction of the new model(08). They can only order then and receive it january if they are lucky or if they want to be overstocked for the next 6 months which half is summer and cycling is dead. They have to order now and overstock, receive it Feb. and try to sell them for the next 2 or3 cool months max. Really tight situation. Im not the very "eager" friend Jessie mentioned. the very very eager actually. They wont be shipping one specially unless the customer pay for the freight by air which is 300USD. I still have connection with the NEW TREK owner and he can still give me something, it's just that the tight situation about the season there prevents them from getting it earlier, and the demand is really too much I dont think Trek can build more than the extra they are producing. We'll just have to wait a little bit,,, hope it's not longer. And it is really worth the wait

Sir Rocky, Sorry but I have to put another idea in your head. The Magura Marta SL brakes that were on the Stumpy really impressed me vs the Avids on the Fuel Ex. I have seen a lot of 2008 9.0 here already and my bike shop buddies have told me that it usually takes 4-6 weeks to get a 2008 9.5. It really is in high demand here especially with all the positive reviews. I believe the frame is less than 4.5 lbs and the one I demo'd at Bootleg came in just under 24 lbs. Back to the main topic i'm finally getting my shadow XTR put on tomorrow. So hopefully it will help me decide what to put on my next rig.

Ouchieee. Avid Juicy Ultimate is in a box at home waiting for Ex 9.5's arrival.
Eniweys, trauma of Marine Corps Parris Island Boot Camp 30 years ++ ago has brainwashed me to patronize anything American made. Which in U.S. A. mtbiking parlance happens to be popular in personification of Trek... a gift to President Bush... my C.O...semper fi...and thus my bike of choice too. Silly as it may sound. But if you are holed up in a foxhole, and shite keeps on hitting the fan, you learn to owe your life to anything american made real quick. That serviceabilty (durability) is lesson learned.. I will wait for 2008 Trek Fuel EX 9.5 even if it gets delivered mid-year July. No problemo by me.
Hopefully 'shadow' XTR RD serves you well... docmed? As it did Levi and Buknoy. We are all awaiting what you have to say after putting it to ridid test at your neck of cottonwoods.

Boredmtbiker, Im using Marta SL right now and it was the lightest before till the ORO's, the Ultimate and then the Hope mini works came out. But it's only a few grams difference and not by the hundred in grams so it's not an issue. The Marta's have a vague feel when you release the lever unlike the others that makes sound like clak clak, you know, like the cocking of a gun. ;D But in the power sector, Avid is alittle bit more stronger. around 20 percent stronger than the Magura's. I have used both and service both of them, I need to put 8 rotors upfront to handle long downhills on the marta's unlike with the Avid's even with just 6 rotors. Why Im still using the Marta's? It was a gift from someone and I cannot just sell it or let it gather dust in the house. I guess Im not that aggressive anymore and those extra percent in braking power is not put into use. But it is a very good product which is backed up by a 5 year leak warranty.

I think the levers fit me rather well and I kept on wondering how those thin wavy rotors could stop anything. That is how the new 2008 stumpy is set -up, 180 up front, 160 in the back.

We are all awaiting what you have to say after putting it to ridid test at your neck of cottonwoods. Sir Rocky, the Ultimates are great too but those red Marta SLs sure look good with black carbon. I'm also partial to the red, white and blue.

But it is a very good product which is backed up by a 5 year leak warranty. thanks for the info Enzo. I think the levers fit me rather well and I kept on wondering how those thin wavy rotors could stop anything. That is how the new 2008 stumpy is set -up, 180 up front, 160 in the back. I was lusting for those red Martas when the first came out as exclusive or OEM for Specialized. Still lusting actually ;D The 180 rotor upfront did the job for them and I have them installed whenever we are riding trails with long downhills. Im sorry I forgot to mention im using a cross country bike and overlooked the Trek too being a Trail, all mountain rig which needs 180 rotors. A friend of mine who rides a xc bike did the same by changing to 180 and that gave all the power he needs. He's hovering around 100kilos. ;D
