I am tickled pink as to how XTR Shadow RD will measure up against Bootleg or Cottonwood? We are patiently waiting for the result of your test run...Boredmdmtber.

Buknoy: works very well Levi: very good rd
Buknoy: very smooth shifting Levi: shifts very smoothly

I rode solo today at Bootleg, up girl scout, inner circle then down the gnarly and rocky East Leg. 6 mile loop, 1000 feet elevation gain/climb. Temperature at 55 degrees, slight breeze but East Leg made me sweat big time. The Shadow XTR comes in Top Normal only and was really designed for the Rapidfire shifters but it worked very well with my old DCL's although shifting is opposite from what I'm used to. Shifting under a load like while you're climbing was no problem. I hate to say it but sometimes the feel was like that of the SRAM X.0. Is it worth $200+? Yes I would say. It does look bad a$$. The spring is huge compared to other RD's. If I had a 2007 XTR RD would I upgrade it to a Shadow? Nope unless money is no object. It compares very well to the SRAM X.0 in my opinion. Long term use will be interesting to see. on the Inner Circle of Caldera Perfect place to try it out on the East Leg. You're coming down fast, you hit the rocks, drop off that rock in a turn, shift and power back up. on the East Leg, a gnarly drop bonus pics of the east leg Girl scout(lower) and west leg(upper) as viewed from east leg. you can shuttle up the road just below girl scout if you want to do some serious downhilling

Sir Rocky, One more thing you might want to put on the superbike you're building... ...they do have it in a RP23 version.

Oh wow! Three is a crowd. Verdict is unanimous. And to test 08 xtr shadow's rd performance at (bootleg) and pass with flying colors, it is battle tested. I am convinced.
Upgrade to 2008 XTR shadow RD then from 2007 XTR RD.
Of course, the three of you mentioned least that "It does look bad a$$"!
Question is will it last? Keep 2007 xtr rd as spare in case 08 xtr rd longetivity will be an issue.
OT: The more gnarliness and high technicality of either Cottonwood or Bootleg trails are exposed, the more I scratch my head and wonder if I am Worthy of it.
Perhaps, I'd rather lounge on my director's chair and be in awe its God-given beauty na lang.

After having my bike retuned again ( everything was new during my first ride ) it was really a big improvement. Im not saying the 07 was bad but in all aspect the 08 is a lot better. Shifting is very precise and smooth. There are times I dont even hear it shift and I have to look down if it really did. Im very satisfied with my upgrade that Im thinking of getting one for my wifes bike. Though Im not sure regarding the durability of carbon but lets us see how it will fair in the long run. I have talked to several users and they are all happy with it. At least its a lot cheaper than the XO but feels the same.

Shadow XTR Trail Tested at Cottonwood today. Obviously still works very well. Still looks bad a$$. I had multiple shifting opportunities, climbing/descending, going over rough stuff, never had a problem. Temperature today at 43 degree F and windy. In case you're wondering, we don't ride that dirt road in the background of the first pic. It's all singletrack riding at Cottonwood.

Here we go again. Another never ending series of which is better?
07 xtr rd vs 08 xtr shadow rd.
HhhMmm. So far Levi, Buknoy, Boredmdmtber are in favor of 2008 xtr rd. And what glowing tributes in favor of "bad a$$ looking carbon".
Latest additions are:
Levi:
- shifting very precise and smooth - sometimes I didn't even hear 08 rd actually shifted already. - very very satisfied - will get same for wifey - several other users are all happy with it - lot cheaper than XO but feels the same
boredmdmtber:
- "still working well after multiple shifting opportunities, climbing/descending, going over rough stuff, never had a problem" - and may I emphasize, docmed's proving ground is at cottonwood. The real McCoy. The roughest, gnarliest, and meanest of trails that would put to real test stuff you are made of.
jcatienza:
- IMO 08 xtr rd is not cutting it. - xtr 07 rapid rise is better.

Its always fun when opinions come into play but like I said I wouldn't necessarily upgrade from a 07 XTR to a shadow because there really wouldn't be that much of a performance boost if any. I had a choice, get the 07 XTR, the shadow XT or wait for the shadow XTR. Any of these should work well, you get what you pay for. For it to work well with my DCL's when it was really designed for Rapidfire is a plus. In my opinion, the best upgrade with the best performance boost was the XTR crank. My suspension would be second and the wheels would be third. Durability would be key with this shadow RD. If it last more than a year and I don't have to bring it to the LBS all the time then my money was well worth it. It still looks bad a$$ IMHO. The SRAM X.0 previously held that honor.

HhhMmm. The more reviews are thrown in to the pot, the merrier.
It seems I was able to peer into a microscope here. Perspective re 07/08 xtr rd got focus and are now clearer.
Mwah. Thank you so much PMTBerks for your recon.
For some of us who are planning to upgrade on 2008 xtr, path ahead are posted loud and clear. Decision is yours to take.

Shadow XTR Still Ballin at Bootleg Canyon. Still no complaints today. Usually after a couple of rides you need some adjustments but none so far. More climbing today at Bootleg. G-out galore on the middle lake view. I'm also breaking-in my re-tuned Push RP3, so far working as advertised. I keep on saying it looks bad a$$ Some views on the Middle Lakeview Loop. 1500 feet elevation gain/climb.

Still bad a$$ looking inspite of desert sand and storm. More so if color-coordinated with your darkish black carbony Santa Cruz frame, bling-blingy its total effect.
How I wish I can have my 2008 Fox Talas RLC and Fox RP23 P U S Hed. We don't have P U S H service in P.I. eh. Only back in the states can that be done. Since my main purpose for trail riding now that I am close to sixtyish is to keep the doctor away by staying in good cardio shape and putting my weight in check, P U S H calibrated FOX suspensions are tuned more for intermediate /advance XC riders. I have demoted my trail riding back to leisure, fun, newbie category to stay safe.
Something tells me it is the heavy duty spring of 08 xtr shadow rd that hacks all gnarly and techy ascending/descending at Bootleg Canyon.

Sir Rocky,
Sounds like you're just waiting for your frame now and you have all those top-of-the line components sitting and waiting too.

That is true. I am just waiting for EX 9.5 carbon frame to be distributed by Trek Wisconsin worldwide. Top-of-line-componentss are at home waiting to be installed once EX 9.5 frame arrives. Sad part is Extreme Bike shop sold both 08 Trek Fuel EX 9 and EX 8 here few days ago. Did I drool bad after seeing and touching up close this latest Trek R1i suspension technology. Thanks goodness I cannot ride yet. Or else this will be one cruel wait.

The 9.5 will be worth the wait. That carbon frame sure handles differently. Plus, it looks bad a$$!!

One more test for the Shadow XTR. Nightriding at Bootleg Canyon. I can really say I trust this RD now. Reliable shifting when you really need it. If you're looking for a major performance upgrade on your mountain bike you probably will not find it by just changing your RD. Look elsewhere.

I was really rendered speechless after I saw Flipnidaho braving 'feeling like -8'C' cold of Boise, Idaho. His ride was aptly titled desert storm for obvious reasons. It is that time of the year again when winter white storm covers trails.
Not to say that it does not get cold at Bootleg trails. You are likewise wrapped up yourself whenever hitting trails. Only difference being your neck of woods ain't covered with snow yet. It still looks fiery navajo desert red as ever despite freezing weather..
Question is does your trail ever get covered with snow? Honest question. We mtbikers of tropical belt don't know.

Sir Rocky, The Bristlecone Pine Trail on Mt. Charleston (30-40 minutes from downtown Las Vegas) is covered with snow right now. Elevation is above 9000 feet though and the trail is rather dangerous with snow because of cliff exposure on the singletrack portions. Cottonwood sometimes gets snow if a major storm rolls through but it doesn't last. It snowed last year in Bootleg one time.

Boredmdmtber, What is your rear rotor? Papa Rocky, Days away from testing the Shadow rd. Got mine with the help of Yukon and a lady cyclist who jsut flew in from her holidays back there. And it's a mid cage. It does look kick ass and will make my bike full XTR and not chopsuey. Not that I hate SRAM now, I just have to get the best of both company. Who knows, maybe once I got a hold of a white frame from Trek, then eithr one of them will be installed to it. Im not saying which frame but you have a pretty good idea which model it is

WaaaHhh! Where is Trek Fuel EX 9.5 Onyx Black carbon frame that I ordered way back Oct 1 pa? Why is Trek USA making me wait this long? It looks like you will get your white Trek Fuel EX carbon frame first at Dubai than me from local Trek distributor and LBS here? My patience is running real low na. Counting one...and two...and (.....). Trek Fuel EX 9.5. Out!

Again...you are such an angel Tofi for plucking me out of pit of despair and confusion that has been giving me such monumental pain lately. Your voice is reassurance of objectivity saving a self confessed Trek addict from his next fix. Where is my Trek Fuel EX 9.5? Where?
I e-mailed local Trek distributor Eric Roque two weeks ago asking meekly when I will receive EX 9.5 I ordered from him last Oct 1st pa? Silence from his end.
I asked John Chua of Extreme Bike shop last weekend to follow up on Eric Roque when will Trek Fuel EX 9.5 be delivered? No reply from him too.
I called Liezl Chua this weekend to follow up on John Chua delivery status of EX 9.5 I ordered more than 3 months ago? She replied "I wait for them to call me na lang. Eric Roque is too busy lately?"
Now. Now. Now. Statements like that make me see hell and fury again. Don't!
I am trying to stay patient and cool ...Tofi. Hate to reveal this personal frustration in the forum.
But hopefully with PinoyMTBikers' help and stirrring of the pot, local Trek dealer Eric Roque via Extreme Bike Shop owners will answer my request sooner when will I receive Trek Fuel EX 9.5 I ordered from them last Oct 1 pa?
Sigh.

that might just be the case. he might be too busy lately with the Giant Showroom that opened up recently,a brad-in-laws newly opened bikeshop etc...
i know how frustrating it is waiting for the frame. believe me a lot of folks feel the same here.we all can't wait and are very anxious til you get yours so we can plan out your comeback ride with the flashy new steed that you truely deserve.
i too am frustrated since i have been front hydro brake less for almost a month now and counting....
i just hope we get some answers soon. with all the products he locally distributes, long lag times for customer service can have some kind of ill effect on the rep. but still...lets give him the benefit of the doubt.

You guys should organize a "critical mass" ride right in front of the said shop and just go around and around that whole block ;D. Sir Rocky, Oct 1 is just around the corner AGAIN and you've been more than patient. They should give you an extra part or a lifetime tune up or something.

Sigh. Hi Fafa Rocks, I too felt that way when I placed an order for a medium 08 Giant Reign. I ordered it last September but it never arrived, though it wasn't the fault of the LBS or the distributor. It seemed the bike was a hot item worldwide and Giant was experiencing a shortage. What did I do? I went out and got another frame. Now I'm very very very very very very happy with my 08 Santa Cruz Heckler. People say it's an old design, single pivot, yada yada...but I don't care. It's sooo much fun to ride! My other bike is gathering dust now. And besides, as the old saying goes - if it ain't broke, don't fix it! You're most welcome to demo my heckler along the Rocky Road, and i think there are a couple more frames available at Sta Rosa bikehauz if you are interested!
