This is not only about the game but I noticed some of the poster here dislike the Americans? Is this jealousy how the American is successful country? dislike? YES... but jealousy? I dont think so...
whats there to be jealous about? they suck in football, so it doesnt matter.Sorry but I'm not a American born but this country provide, give me better life and opportunity and NO OTHER COUNTRY CAN DO BETTER. i still live in the philippines and this country provides and gives me a good life and opportunity and I know there are a lot of countries that can do better. different folks, different stories... not all filipinos have a hard time in their native country... and definitely not all filipinos find a better life in the US and DEFINITELY ANOTHER COUNTRY CAN DO BETTER... Australia has better job opportunities and higher wages... Canada has greater benefits for immigrants, and lower taxes... the list goes on...
Wake up...I would say is my second country and willing to protect anytime. Some people they hates America but in there heart are trying hard to migrate and have better life. very true. i agree. most filipinos that I know are like that. even my cousins that have been in the US for only a year feels like they are real americans and boast about how good the US is and right awayDont get me wrong also lots of people here hates America but they still around. If they hate America so much they should get out and go back to the country they love the most. Did your grand parent told you that without the Americans soldier sacrifice (twice) probably your not around? he also told me that without the other filipinos sacrifice, there is more chances we wont bearound today.
its like comparing the americans to the Marcos family, during the reign of marcos, the philippines was rich, economy wise... they helped the country become beautiful and rich... BUT! they also did a lot of heinous things, corruption, killings, etc.
its the same with the americans...
case closed.I'm sorry but soccer is not that famous here because no MONEY and boring game! If they will break the game in 4 quarters it may create sponsors. Probably some kids moving to that direction if the money is great. 1st point... no money?? they are the second highest paid pro athletes in the world next to Formula 1 drivers.
look at what germany has put out for the world cup, how many stadiums were built and restored, and how much people are willing to spend to actually go there and watch the games... no money??
bring the NBA finals there in germany, then ull see what "no moey" really means.
it has no money there in the US just like here in the philippines because it is not popular there. again... different countries, different sports... different strokes for different folks.
2nd point... boring?? yeah true to those countries that dont play football... let see... what are the countries where football isnt that big and popular... I got two answers! US and Philippines!
football is boring only to the non players...
I find basketball boring because I dont play/watch it... I find billiards boring because I dont play/watch it... I find cricket boring because I dont play/watch it... I find Nascar boring because it is simply boring....
YOU find football boring beause YOU DONT play/watch it...
right? Remember UCI is also part of Tour de france and who was the best all time? we were talking about UCI Downhill loud and clear... Tour de france, while it may have downhill sections all throughout the course, it isnt and cant be considered as a Downhill event. yes it is part of UCI, yes it is an american who is dominating, yehey for him! but we are not talking about road biking here...I hope I would not offend anyone as you offend other member. Just remember think before you post and may offend someone. You have offended me, but do I care? no... We both have opinions. I respect yours and other people's opinion...
I log on to forums because of the intelligent exchange of ideas. This is one of them.
If I get offended its like going to a club/disco and complain about why the music is too loud...I will. After this long post. seriously. This is OT, sorry also... Hay its good to unwind after working hard for 3 days straight.... this forum is really a stress reliever. plus it gets me worked up and excited to ride...
peace to everyone... one life to live... enjoy it.... lets ride...

i hate the american philosophy. we're number one. we're world champs. and the goddam gloating and attitude. remember vince carter and kevin garnett when they won gold in the olympics? professional sports in the US is a poor display of sportsmanship. watch NFL. goddam celebration on every play. they set poor standards as role models. to think that they get so much media time.
it's this philosophy that's causing the downfall of good athletes in the US. much more why the US is not interested in football. there's no goddam money there! MLS is not as big as football, basketball, or baseball. as much as it is here in the philippines, kids are encourage to pick up any of those three sports. d'you think kids from the ghetto would pick up a soccer ball and dream of playing in the MLS? professional sports in the US will fall. kids as young as 7th graders are being scouted by NBA teams already. the values they need to develop are being corrupted by commercialism.
ang pinoy bastardong anak ng amerkano. he fell in love with basketball. he's clearly too short to play the game, yet he tries. we've got good athletes here. but they're picking up the wrong ball. if a country as small as trinidad & tobago can play on the world stage, kaya rin ng pinoy yun. but what do we do? we get half-breeds from the US, and make them play basketball in the dying pinoy basketball league. we show NBA games daily. is it not one of the reasons why the PBA decreased it's viewers is because they're indirectly competing with the NBA?
please dont get me wrong. i'm not another filipino-hating-filipino. i just want pinoys to wake up and see they've been admiring cow dung because the stepfather that abandoned him told him it was beautiful.

i agree with most of the points raised for futbol in this topic, i for one would like to see my son learning about the sport. futbol then biking. in that order. basta futbol is the priority. if he doesn't like it, ok lang.

i want the nike (kahit sellout) shirt that sez:
"it's not soccer mate, it's futbol!" Funny though that the statement on this shirt was meant mainly to be said by an Aussie, since they call each other "mate" but their own futbol team is called the "socceroos"

I don't know where you guys get the idea that "soccer" isn't popular in the US. Maybe you picture America in the redneck kinda way (Nascar, baseball) Remember that there are tons of immigrants here from Europe, South America and Asia (Koreans are very passionate about it). Kids as young as 4yo plays it. Heard of soccer moms? Close to one of my fave trail is a HUGE, I mean REALLY BIG soccerplex with 24 fields www.mdsoccerplex.org/soccerplex/layout/index_E.html I'm not a fan of the game, but a lot of people I know are.

This is not only about the game but I noticed some of the poster here dislike the Americans? Is this jealousy how the American is successful country? dislike? YES... but jealousy? I dont think so...
whats there to be jealous about? they suck in football, so it doesnt matter.Did the America did something to you bad? You must have a reason to hate America? Not my concern..cuase not to me . America is no:1 is football what you talking about. I would not say Americans suck in futball. When they really start playing the game? Futball get famous since the 80's when more and more immigrants move here and look what they accomplished after that. The game get more famous after advancing in 1992 and..now they were competing in world cup. Some countries are been there sport in long period of time and were are they. i still live in the philippines and this country provides and gives me a good life and opportunity and I know there are a lot of countries that can do better. different folks, different stories... not all filipinos have a hard time in their native country... and definitely not all filipinos find a better life in the US and DEFINITELY ANOTHER COUNTRY CAN DO BETTER... Australia has better job opportunities and higher wages... Canada has greater benefits for immigrants, and lower taxes... the list goes on...
Wake up... What is the majority?..Im not bashing Pinas but most of the successful people are tied to politics. In Australia - how much freedom you have to run a business compare to America? Specially if you are minority. In Canada -how many percent deducted on your paycheck to have that benefits? Lower taxes how much money your will get for refund? About food and goods how cheap they are? how long to wait and have surgery. Some sad stories that the person already dead a year ago when he/she get a call to have one. You given me two example countries and the two combine the US still way better. Rights and Freedom Dude!!!! wake up... its like comparing the americans to the Marcos family, during the reign of marcos, the philippines was rich, economy wise... they helped the country become beautiful and rich... BUT! they also did a lot of heinous things, corruption, killings, etc. Dont compare the US govt to Marcos..your talking about Dictator against Democratic. Its totally different. Where did you get about heinous, corruption and killings, etc of American govt? You read and watch to much negative news about America. American govt. protect his interest and concern about his people in the future not anything else. Who help and were the money came from to be come rich and beautiful? I would rather become a colony than what they have now. Example: Guam and Puerto Rico. 1st point... no money?? they are the second highest paid pro athletes in the world next to Formula 1 drivers.
look at what germany has put out for the world cup, how many stadiums were built and restored, and how much people are willing to spend to actually go there and watch the games... no money??

YOU find football boring beause YOU DONT play/watch it...
right? What is the percentage to be a famous futball player and get paid that much. How long there contract? Are they protected after there contract expired? I dont think so..They go home to there love countries and better invest those money to continue living rich or else they will end up in the streets. Did you know that salary in basketball, tennis and other sports are nothing compare the money they get in endorsement. Give you and example of Michael Jordan. He only get paid around $35 million a year but he gets double or triple his salary to endorsement and even until now still making money. Another example Tiger Wood he only gets maximum of 1 million in one game if he wins but he gets 10 times or more due to endorsement. So dont compare that futball players get paid more money. Americans kids rather take better chance and higher percentage going in Baseball, basketball, tennis, football and other sport that Americans sport they love. If they grow up as excellent players they will strike rich right away not is short term but even they retired they still make money due to endorsement. Right..I find the game boring because for me no exciment..kicking the ball for 2 hours and end 0 -0. Just like I can go ride in an hour and comeback look like I dont miss anything. But I keep it to myself and not posting on the board and bashing the country specially if you dont know whats going own inside that country. Sorry folks..I confess my true feeling about the game . Also sorry for not staying on the topic .

Look at the bright side..without the pumping hormons and motivation they are not going anywhere. But you are right over commercialist not about pride anymore is all about money. Example a 14 yrs old soccer player name Freddy Adu got a contract in a very young age. Becuase of too much pride and how much money they will put in there pocket the pinoys given a chance to get up (independence) not abondoned and free to do things and any enterest they want but seems like they cant walk by there own. I know where is going but I will stop it. If your not happy my answer just pm me because were hijacking the thread.

Hey easy guys.... let's not get to some arguments on teams here. Seems pinoy football fans are solid fans after all.
Blister easy with sort of comments that's aren't really necessary here, we already had issues about this back then. Some remarks are really inflaming specially for someone who came to love the country.
Please let's just get back to the game discussion will you, not about the teams claims of glory.
Honestly I'm not rooting for any team, I played soccer (sorry that's the name I get to recognize the sports with, call it what you want) played better on that sport than basketball.
Japan lost to Aussy, tied with Croatia .... was expecting them to fare well this time.

World Cup Update:
Quarter Finals Team (Magic 8)
Germany v. Argentina Italy v. Ukraine England v. Portugal Last 2 slots to be played by the winner of plays scheduled today( Brazil v Ghana & Spain v. France)
It would seem that this will again be an (almost) all european quarterfinals save for argentina and (most possibly) brazil.
the socerroos of famed coach gus hiddink (remember when he brought south korea to the semifinals) eliminated by one goal (penalty kick) by italy.
come on guys let's stick to discussing the world cup, now that the quarterfinals is underway, the excitement is building up more....more....and more.let's stop the bashing...opinions had already been aired, i think that we've had enough.
peace!!!!
would still love to see an england-brazil finals!!!!

Wached the Australia-Italy match in a bar/casino last night and you could really feel the disappointment of the crowd when the penalty was awarded in like the last 10 seconds of injury time! I felt sad for all those aussies cheering on their socceroos. But Aus has no one to blame but themselves. Italy was a man down for almost the whole 2nd half due to a red card to one of thier players but Aus couldn't capitalize on the advantage

Just a clarification, for those who care... the US didn't "claim to be #5 in the world". That was their FIFA ranking. I don't know what the FIFA ranking system is based on, but it's clearly a bit weird: going into the World Cup, the Czech Republic was ranked #2, and they aren't anything like that good. In any event, the beef on that is with FIFA, not the Americans!
Too bad that Argentina and Germany, the two most impressive teams in the tournament so far, have to meet in the quarterfinals. Should be a hell of a game, though, and the winner will be strongly favored to win the whole thing, especially if Brazil stays in its current not-terribly-impressive mode. I'd like to see Argentina win, just out of sentiment... though I'd like to see more of Lionel Messi and Carlos Tevez! I'd like to see Riquelme running the attack with Tevez on the left and Messi on the right, Crespo in the middle with Saviola as an overqualified sub (something every really competitive team needs!). But of course it's not up to me...
Italy have had the easy road so far, and even though they've hardly been overwhelming you'd have to expect them to beat Ukraine handily. On basis of form so far, you'd also have to expect them to go down to the winner of Germany-Argentina, though they are always capable of pulling off a surprise - in this case, it would be a really big surprise.
I'm not impressed at all with England. I kept hearing before the tournament about England's fantastic midfield, but it seems to me that while they have a lot of fantastic midfielders, they have yet to put them together in a group that really works. The two most noted ones, Gerrard and Lampard, are accustomed to playing the same role, and it's tough to have them on the field at the same time. Beckham can still do great things with a free kick, but just doesn't have the legs to be a threat on the wing... I'd love to see more of Aaron Lennon on their right side, a very interesting young player in the Lionel Messi mode. Joe Cole is probably the most effective of the lot so far, but sometimes it seems like he's playing well in a vacuum, not linking up with the rest of the team. They have had a lucky draw so far, though: Portugal is never an easy team to beat, but without Deco their offense will be a lot less threatening. I figure England to be slight favorites here, but they will have to play better than they have so far.
Brazil should beat Ghana handily, unless they simply and spectacularly collapse. They haven't been overwhelming so far, against less than overwhelming opposition, but they won't have to play their best to win. They will need to play their best to build the psychological edge they will need in the next round.
Spain/France is intriguing... France have an aging lineup of huge names that haven't lived up to their billing... but you keep waiting for them to step up and live up to their reputations, and it is possible. Spain are younger, better balanced, and probably hungrier, but they are carrying that stigma of ALWAYS underperforming. I'm betting on Spain, largely on personal preference and largely because I think Spain-Brazil would be huge fun.
I'd expect either Spain or France to give Brazil a hard time, but if Brazil rises to the occasion, they certainly should come out on top.
I think a semifinal between Brazil and England is likely, and I think the English are way too rigid and nowhere nearly good enough at keeping possession to stand up to Brazil.
If I were laying out betting odds, I'd bet on Germany to beat Argentina, purely on home-field advantage, and roll over Italy in the semifinal, to set up a Brazil-Germany repeat. On sentiment, though, I'll favor Argentina over both Germany and Italy, for a really exciting Brazil-Argentina match.
I'll almost certainly be wrong somewhere along the line! Notably... Portugal could easily knock England out, and either France or Spain could, on their day, take Brazil if Brazil gets sloppy, which they sometimes do. Italy has the experience and the talent to play well above what they've shown so far, and can beat anybody if they pull it together all at once.
Still, though... I'll stick to my predictions!

dayuhan - impressive! please do give us more reviews/predictions until we reach July 9
Spain-Brazil, is huge fun indeed, far-fetched, but huge fun if it happens (the ball is round, as they say)
Brazil-England in the semis - the English should be happy enough they will reach that far.

I'm not sure Spain-Brazil is so far-fetched... Brazil is a big favorite against Ghana, and Spain has looked a lot better than France so far. of course Spain could always implode, as they usually do, but so could France. France has a fairly old team, and the Spaniards have the speed to break past them.
I'll still bet on Spain to take France, though not at long odds. Could go the other way, if France plays their best game of the tournament so far by a long shot or if Spain disintegrates... but I'll stick with predicting a narrow win for Spain.
England-Portugal? I haven't seen any of Portugal's games so far, so I'm sort of in a vacuum, but Deco would be a big loss to any team (ok, I'm an FC Barcelona fan). Almost even odds, England a nose ahead IF that star-studded midfield can start working as a team and if Rooney can score. England seems to be going 4-5-1, which is a positive change I think.
We'll see!
