what's the ideal handle bar length for DH? is it rider's preference or is there a proper measurement? 27", 26" or 25" pros and cons? thanks!

i had 26 before and i was fine w/ it... then i got a 27 and i thought i would try that out before cutting it. basically i got use to it but it's tight between trees when i'm on a log ride. so it's still in my mind that maybe i should cut it shorter. maybe 26.5". ^^ example of rider's prefs.

you know its right, if youre' comfortable in your riding/attack position, you can pull up and push foward your front easily at any given time, or when the need arises. you can control the bike, a rider's decision.
disadvantage of using a too wide handle bars, is when the course or trail has narrow "chutes" (tunnel) or narrow single tracks (one side is a ravine), and trees along the trail that may clip the end of the handle bars, and throw you off you bike if you're riding fast.
also a long handle bar is heavier (more material) compared to a short one.
it's harder to turn your front wheel and harder to pull up with a too short handle bars.
28 inches is the longest bar i have used. azonic pdw. (heavy)
currently using a stock easton ea70 handle bar low rise handle bar.
handle bar rise is also important as the lenght. for dh a low front end is the set up, so you can ride agressively.
i don't like to saw handle bars, it easier to sell 2nd hand uncut handle bars.

I prefer a 28" wide handlebar for DH and FR...gives me more control and leverage specially over some technical sections...

For x-ups its diffinitely too long for that...I guess 26" is just right lenght then...

i prefer low rise handle bars for dh, keep that front low, especially if you have 8" fork
no spacers after the headset, uppercrown, then stem.

aidz,
what you feel comfortable with. bar width, like your seating height will be at best if your're VERY comfortable while riding.

Its' a dh bike not a harley davidson! hehehehehehe,
seriously high rise bars/spacers makes you ride in an upright position,
on down hill, i literally squat riding the bike, to lower your center of gravity, neutral position, weight on the pedals, for traction front and rear tires.
your body can lean on the left or right, push forward or lean back, pull up any time you want.
jong, how about riding with a jungle bolo/chain saw and slash your way down the trail.
I love trees.

Before I was cutting my hadlebars for DH. Now, I use uncut Funn Full-on bars. It gives me more control of my bike. Plus I can muscle my bike, if I need to, more easily than a shorter bar.

Girlie Bar= My favorite!
ask rocketman he knows what he's talkin bout!
and when it comes to handlebar strength? screw the advertisements! lol IF U HIT BAR FIRST ITS GONNA BREAK N pray it dsnt puncture or poke you anywhere soft or up ur azz! ^_^

BUDDY was fast and placed 1st in the frist heat of a dh race novice cat. at san mateo not too long ago,
race was in UCI format, seeding run then final,
HE was last rider to be released, every one is excited and waiting for him to emerge from that "chute" until that loud crashing sound,........... the bamboo tree was shaking.
I also remember in that race, there's a part of the course a single track that you need to pass thru between two trees, where the end of your handle bar will brush the trees.
buddy! what's up?

heheheheh i had this funny idea of mimmicking "Si Malakas minus si Maganda" lol.....there was a rock protruding in the midle of the chutes approach .. evryone was either passing left or right of thr d@mn rock but never on top..altho ado and a few pros did.... (jansen did too..see he ended up biting his tongue n clipping his jaw)..... went too fast i overshot thru taht rock and ended up in the middle of a bunch of bamboo trees(the 6" thick bamboo not the band)........ lol
Tatay Jun Mariano of GCC picked me up from the rampage...... with both ankles n my left hip swollen like a mother....lolx almost had a 1st and i lost it lol! it was fun tho... thats racing tho u win some u lose some.........that was the same race Lester Lebumfacil(current national artist of baguio...dont ask why! lol) broke his nose snapped his back n went 50/50 right? he actually crapped in his pants! lol... but tahts what "normally" happens when ur 50/50 or knocked out and struggling.....iv been through 5 of those... mind widening experience tho...LOL It was a fun race ... 1st time my kid watched my race..........nyahahahah senti ba?..LOL
anyways..... handlebars are suppose to be measured to your comfortable riding stance wherein your steering vs arm motion is 1:1
and u have to customize the length to fit ur span.... dnt worry bout snagging stuff on ur way down cuz if go too short u cant supaglue it back or either u live with twitchy steering or then again get a new bar $_$ and re-fit it to your ride..... right? u snag stuff at insane speeds u wont hav to worry bout ur bar no more all ud hav to think about in mid air is "where the hell am i gonna land?" LOL]
azonic handlebars are major kunat..... i swear! i saw arjuna whack 5 ppl with it in brawl in mandaluyong b4......lol.... i was none lethal i had a monblock chair in hand...lol

Uncut handle bar is best for Dh/Fr ride. More room for handling and control, low rise bar is next to the menu.

hbar length really depends on the rider. i'd go for cut hbar. this is how i view it. the length will/should go with the wideness of your shoulder. this will give your handling skill better response because the length is cut just right with your body geometry. measure your shoulder first. then try adding up a couple of inches on the measure & mark your bar. then try feeling the comfyness of the length your measured bar. then decide which measurement to follow your cut.

Based on my experience, the statement above is only true for XC bike handle bar length. It's not applicable to downhill or freeride bikes. Wide handle bars can give us more control...
