Things you didn't know you hafta know or were afraid to ask (because you might not like the answers) ;D
Here are my questions:
1. Shoes: What do I buy? Running shoes? Merrel offroad shoes? What? what???
2. Where do I put my bike and shoes and towel in the 1st transition? and where do I leave my goggles, towel and stuff?
Is there an order or "1st-come-1st-put-your-stuff-nearest" situation?
3. Do I pee before/during the swim, and while on the bike? Are there places to pee during the runs?
4. Who'll guaranttee nobody is going to run off with my bike/shoes/food/drinks?
To all the wannabes, please add questions. We wait for the answers from the PMTriBe.

1. Shoes: What do I buy? Running shoes? Merrel offroad shoes? What? what??? Majority of triathlons are road races, so a pair of road running shoes are usually ok. You would want to buy a pair of trail running shoes for those off-road races though, but they're not that common.
2. Where do I put my bike and shoes and towel in the 1st transition? and where do I leave my goggles, towel and stuff? Is there an order or "1st-come-1st-put-your-stuff-nearest" situation? you put them just in front of your bike. to get the best transition times, it helps to practice the routine in your head: like once you get to T1, you put down your goggles, take a swig of water, then towel off a bit, then socks on, shoes on, helmet on, drink some mowre water again, then take the bike off the rack and walk briskly with it to the running area.
3. Do I pee before/during the swim, and while on the bike? Are there places to pee during the runs? no peeing during the swimming pool please! except if you're in open water. if you really have to go, then get out of the water and go to the restroom. during runs, just find you nearest mmda outlet or go find a tree. the weewee issue usually only comes up for the longer distance triathlons (like olympic and ironman) -- the pros usually just pee in their shorts...
4. Who'll guaranttee nobody is going to run off with my bike/shoes/food/drinks? there are marshalls who will guard your stuff. just don't leave other valuables out in the open for others to see.
i believe the best way to learn the answers to these questions is to experience a triathlon firsthand. i joined my first tri not knowing what to do, so i just watched what the oldies/pros were doing.

Taken from the Thread Re: First UP Pasmathon Triathlon I thought it was Bruce Lee! Gadgets your pretty buff already Lean and mean , ktawan pang triathete na yan a! Coach! What should we do to start on building the engine? The looks is OK na, diba? ;D Take note, Oceanrider and Allan, I'm going for your MR. SUBMERSIBLE title! I just realized that my swim background is over-rated. Check out this fact: All my life, I can only do only 100m FREEstyle (pagod na yan = very inefficiently). My real strength is in breaststroke, slow but sure, any distance is doable... I think). So, I'm thinking, should I spend time learning FREESTYLE from square one, or just accept the slow pace of the breast stroke and concentrate on cycling and running instead? Decisions! So many!!! Aaaaarrrrgggghhhhh!!!!!!! Veeduber, sige, let's do it next year. Let's build a training team. But first we need a name for the team... and maybe a logo... gadgets we missed you yesterday, what happened to you? Thanks for the quick response! Yesterday, I was busy cleaning the house (order ni Kumander). I did sneaked out at 9am. Spent 30 minutes trying to run (actually alternate-jogging-and-walking, 5 minutes each). Huwaw... all the while I kept asking myself, what is the right way to run? After lunch, I got into another endurance training with the family. I spent 6 hours at the mall... Was not able to escape to UP because of the family reunion dinner afterwards. Coach Marcs, Alfa, Posible, Carlo, etc... please post more tips!!! Time is ticking! I have to do this before arthritis... or my mahjong friends take me away!!!

I agree with posible21. Just TRI it ;D. Arnel and I were like a bunch of headless chickens on our first tri (almost missed a lap nga in the bike leg!). Eventually you will get the routine (and have your own) in future races. on the swim, i really encourage you to train on freestyle, coz breastroke uses up too much leg power I think, which you will need for the bike and run part. i use breastroke only to get a breather (and get my bearings) but freestyle is my primary stroke coz I only need to move my legs to keep it afloat. again, just do the training, and I think there are weight trainings you can do to strengthen those swimming muscles. Tri-noob ako so to the vets, please correct me if I'm wrong

Attended the Tri Clinic of Miguel Lopez at Metro Club last Saturday. Ria Langit did the swim portion. The P1,200 is worth it - you get a T1 tri/swim/bike shorts pa and buffet lunch, on top of the lectures. Got really good pointers on more efficient swims thru drills, how to run properly, biking tips, transition techniques, nutrition strategies, when to hydrate and take your gels during the bike and run portions, even techniques on how to pee while on the bike and running (make good use of water stations to clean up duh). Maybe we can invite him for an exclusive PinoyMTBiker tri clinic, maybe at a lower cost but simpler meal, so we can have more participants. In the clinic I attended, only 5 were paying, with full video coverage the whole time, and wide flat screen for the powerpoint presentations. Before the clinic, I always check the www.begineertriathlete.com for swim tips and tri experiences. I also use their free training log to record all my rides and swims. It gives a graphic report of your progress, the hours by month, by event, all your weight trainings, and race events participated or observed. Bottom line lesson I got - to improve on the swim part, you really need a coach to train you. And Ria and her sis (Phil Team swimmer) are all very qualified. I have been swimming for a while and had been in the company swim team in my past corporate life, but this can not compare to a dedicated coach who reviews your strokes objectively where you yourself can never see your own form.

"hey if he'll do it for 5 peeps I'm sure we can round up enough guys to have a more affordable clinic we can just do it in someone's swimming pool " marcs, start a list of people interested, maybe include the amount they are willing to pay, and we will try and get in touch with him. we can propose snacks only, as a buffet meal could be too much.

bm5er, should be no problem to get the five, but I think it'll be tough to get a schedule this Dec. Offseason na How about we target it sometime Jan? Now if only I can get my friend to lend me his house in Tali Beach near Punta Fuego . . . .

hey if he'll do it for 5 peeps I'm sure we can round up enough guys to have a more affordable clinic we can just do it in someone's swimming pool 5 peeps * P1200 = P6K. Please ask if he's willing to support PinoyMTBiker by taking a token of P6K for the clinic. That way, we can have 10 participants paying P600 each or 20 participants paying P300 each. We still have to raise money to pay for the pool and food, so definitely we need to get more people to join to raise funds. Oh, tri-wear need to be custom-fitted to each person pala noh? Cannot borrow someone else's wear like we borrow bikes pala... ;D I agree, technique is ultimately most important. You need technique to be efficient, the ability to use the least amount of energy to stay fresh at the start of T1. During my swimming days, we concentrate on brute strength and speed. After all, it's a 100m dash, so we swim all-out from the dive to the finish. Triathlon swimming/cycling/running is quite different, I see. Veeduber, are you ready? (may bikini trunks ka na?)

no it's more of the shoes.
you have to get the right one that matches exactly your foot in terms of not just size but arch as well, and tendency to roll outward or inward (overpronation etc). this will make a big impact on your overall comfort and reducing injury. Unfortuntately, not a lot of stores have sales people that know about this stuff. I went to an Addidas store before and the sales lady was simply tellimg me this shoes looks good etc, and when I asked about what would fit me right she was lost.
Planet Sports was better. The staff knew their stuff, looked at my feet, had me do laps around the store while he observed my stride, etc . . .

Running shoes - try Mizuno - their people understands pronation stuff and all. Went there last night at Club 650, they just do not have the right model for my feet.
Marcs and everyone interested in the Tri Clinic of Ige Lopez: Emailed him last night and he agrees on our plan - after lunch thing so snacks na lang instead of buffet lunch, at a village pool or something so we do not have to rent sports club facilities, T1 stuff to be given at a discount, may consider lowering the cost per person.
Next steps: look for a pool which will not cost us so much; Maybe if we engage the UPM or UP Swim Team as partners, we can use the UP Women's Pool. If we schedule it on a Sunday, we can have the whole academic oval for the bike and run part pa.
What do you say we run the list of people interested na?

bm5er, thanks for the intial plans. UP Oval sounds good on a sunday. we can do picnic afterwards I can help set this up. but can we do this around Jan? Maybe Jan 20 or so? I'm thinking it's best to have this as a New Year kind of thing (New Year, New You naks), and I'm think I'll forget most of the stuff since I don't expect to be doing much training with the holidays here. But if most people want to get it on in Dec, don't let me stop you. Is there a max number? Coz if this can be organized at a good price then I'm guessing lots of peeps may want to join.

sir gadgets, i don't think he is just after earning 6k from this. it just so happened only 5 joined the 1st clinic, so they might not have been able to recoup costs in that. nonetheless, we should come up with a reasonable amount to cover for his services, in consideration of all other costs we will cover, like the pool fees, snacks, etc.
"Is there a max number? Coz if this can be organized at a good price then I'm guessing lots of peeps may want to join."
sir marcs, he said the more the merrier, so my guess is a reasonable number for a class, say 20, would be good. if we can get him to agree to P500 per pax, then I guess P10k would not sound bad for him. We can add 100 for pool fee and snacks?, total 600 - that's already half of the fee he charged us then.

GADGETS, triathlon naman?! you've so many plans ha ;D This is what happens to your grandfathers who refuse to grow up or accept they are growing old. They THINK they're still fit to play with the boys. ;D ;D ;D Actually, I really need to abuse this body for a change! What better way than a 3-part-sport. Question: How come my left side of the waist area (appendix is on the right, diba) hurt? Also the solar plexus. This is after jogging for less than one kilometer! Actually, it hurts everywhere!!! Geesh!

Maybe you're getting cramps? Hydrate with an electrolyte drink like Gatorade or Nuun 30 minutes before running and take a sip every 5-10 minutes during running. You have to make sure you're always properly hydrated, lalo na pag madali kang pawisan at pag mainit! I'd invest in a fuelbelt. fuelbelt.com/ I never go on long runs without mine!
