tried to run (again, after several months layoff) yesterday. imagined i was trail running because i was running with a backpack. was extremely tired after just a couple of kilometers, whereas before i could do so much more... it seems biking and biking and biking is not enough. must not forget running, despite the fact that biking is more enjoyable

finally dug up this thread so here goes: i'm planning to join Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon to be held on December 2, 2007 more out of curiosity perhaps than anything but if friends were to quiz me hard for any other reason then i'd have to say i've been considering to give running a try thanks to mountG and there's the fact that this is THE marathon to join i'm a complete newbie on this running thing, fact is, i've only considered joining because some blokes are selling off their registrations (they can't join). slim chance i'm getting there, i'm in "fishing mode" for anyone giving up their registrations. direct registrations are already closed. and if that wasn't slim enough, i still am not sure if i'm going to be in day care duty on Sunday. but what if things go my way? so here's the part where you might throw advice my way, i'm in crash course mode right now, will try little trail running on Wednesday sorry nga pala if i can't do us proud, at least you can tell your wives and friends over dinner about this crazy flip in fine city who don't know a thing about running trying to join an international marathon race paging fafa len!

Don't rush yourself Sir, Standard and Chartered Hongkong Marathon will be on Feb. 17, 2008 That would give you plenty of time to train...running a marathon without proper training is not fun...I'll be doing my second S&E half marathon too...hope to see you there Cheers,

Race is a motivation to do the training... And training is not fun if you don't have any targets to achieve... starts from 10mins running continuously. Every training day add a minute in your running is already achievement and improvement... Train hard for easy race and always challenge your own time/distance records...

At long last, a running thread.. Owen, like you, I'm really new to running too. Here are some sites I found during research: Running 101: www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-380-381-387-2201-0,00.html - there are more tips at the left tool bar. Local race schedule for 2008: thebullrunner.com/list-of-races-2008/- this site is regularly updated. You could also visit her homepage (Blog) where she writes about her experiences. And finally, this forum where allegra and other tri-idols post their tips. I too plan to run in Feb 2008, the Pasig marathon. But I think I'll be running a half marathon or 10K only. 42Kms is scary for me as of the moment; maybe in 2009.

Yikes! running advice from me?? Running is my weakest sport , and unfortuanetly happens to be my favorite I dont have marathon experience , and I have 2 orthos warning me to rest my knees for at least 2 months - lampa kasi Retzel is the runner here, where's Retz??

Retzel is training for tri's again. ;D
I watched the google videos you posted in the other topic, allegra. Ang lupet naman ng mga triathlete! (trans: triathletes are not human)
Any tips on running shoes? I've read about the Mizuno Wave Creation 8; recommended for normal/high arch foot (http://thebullrunner.com/2007/08/), but I don't even know what my foot shape is. I might drop by Mizuno in Bonifacio High Street just to ask advice from them. Window shopping for now as I have no budget for new running shoes. ;D

The bottom of the foot was like sprained. Very weird indeed. Gave the shoes away and went to buy an OAKLEY fashion rubber shoes instead during the SALE and walked happily ever after. Paging Retzel!!! What are we to do?

i believe a properly fitted running shoes plays a big part in this discipline. properly fitted shoes provides the feet's needed comfort from all the beatings it gets from running. i remember running 5K one time using a non-running specific shoes and voila.......my plantar faciitis* suddenly set in after the run. *swelling of the foot heels caused by heel spurs on the plantar facii (sp?) Hope this helps in all the confusion

years ago i've seen a female runner on tv competing barefooted...i think she's a big named white south african...which is a bigger factor, the shoes or finding the right style that will match your physical characteristics recognizing that no two persons are built the same?
just curious.

Tolits, the design matters most. ;D Kidding aside, I think it's the shoes that fit well that matters most. If you're comfortable with the shoes you're wearing, you don't have to worry about anything else but running. Arci, do you plan on running again? Want to join a 5 or 10K in January at the Subic Marathon? Everyone's invited! Tara! Hope the PinoyMTBiker triathletes would join as well.

barefoot running supposedly strengthens key muscles in your feet, muscles that tend to be 'lazy' coz the modern hi-tech running shoes does all the work. this is why Nike came up with the Nike Free models, to simulate running barefoot on grass. It's really a comfortable shoe and you can really feel your feet going free hehehe. but it's best for training only i think and not for really long runs as there is minimal cushioning and the sole is very flexible. as an aside, I remember one story told by Eboy. Some hiker or biker was lost in one of the mountains in Bataan, and while he was coordinating a search and rescue party, 'bring a 4x4, contact the baranggay captain, oh and bring an aeta as well' apparantly those folks can go up and down the mountain easily, barefoot. so be wary if you ask directions from an aeta. If he says it's just nearby, you're probabl still a mountain or two away

ey owen...the courage in joining the run is enough for us be proud of you brad.
running barefoot... hayy the joys of doing those during grade school days, honestly I don't like looonggg runs. I'm more on burst sprints, which was developed playing soccer fullback during my high school days.
Hope I get the courage to build up my stamina this coming year, might try 5K...or perhaps 10K...and try to join a beginner tri too.

During the Men's Health Urbanathlon, my friends and I saw a pair of Asics running shoes on the road at our 2nd lap. Some runner must have felt the urge to run barefoot. One of my friends wanted to take the shoes home; baka ayaw na daw ng mayari e.
Arci, I'll inform you once I have decided to join the Subic run. The hard part kasi is waking up as the race will start before sunrise (assembly is 4:00 am), and I'm not a morning person. ;D

For '08 scheds, kindly visit this site: thebullrunner.com/list-of-races-2008/warlock, please do join the fun run/s! I really want to join the Pasig River Heritage run on Feb. 24, because it's for a cause. That gives us ~2months to train. Arci, fyi, the tri clinic is the same date as the Subic marathon. I'm afraid of drowning, just like mountguitars. Hmmm, which one should I join?
