my girl friend wants to try out biking but afraid to try one because she wants her feet to touch the ground when seated on the saddle.. is this ok ? Scooter, No.. thats to dangerous. Would you imagine if her feet hit a rock or when the bike hit a bump . She might damage her spinal . Also she doesnt have any control on the bike properly. Try to train her in the pave (flat) before hitting the trail. Just an advice from a big brother

scooter, jr, maybe what she meant was pag nagstop siya, puede niya i-tapat ang dalawang paa nya sa ground...that's how my wife likes here seat height set to hehehe... ok lang yun pag puro flats at mabagal lang pace ng riders...pero pag nag trail-ride, tama ang advice ni jr....delikado sa malubak pag nakababa ang dalawang paa to almost ground level. her full weight is on the saddle at pag medyo mabilis at tumama sa medyo malaking lubak, naku...baka lumipad sya

gulliver.. yes, that;s exactly what she's saying... sayad ang paa pag tumigil... i told her na unti untiin na lang yung pagtaas... so start muna na mababa ang seat.. then tsaka na itaas unti unti...
will keep you posted pagbili nya ng bike

I dont see any problem yan naman ang porma ng bmx riders I doubt a newbie will be going fast enough to make it painfull

It doesnt hav to be fast to hurt that much. The most painful mistakes happen at low speeds when youre more prone to losing your balance, compared to going faster which logically keeps you in balance. Did that make sense?.......Sarap nung lapid's eh nahihilo nako d2! ;D

ok, you guys are forgetting one thing. i think she doesn't know how to ride a bike yet. so when we all started riding, we all wanted to ride w/ the saddle so low our feet can touch the ground. that's normal and it is safe. she's learning how to ride a bike. it gives her the confidence that if she looses her balance she could still just put her foot down and everything will be ok. anyways, even in the trails, i have (and most guys here) have our seat low enough so that we could actually put our feet fown even when on the saddle. why? coz when you're riding skinnies, it gives u the confidence that u can always put both or just one feet down when u dnt wanna continue or starting to lose your balance. it is safe and it's fine. it's more dangerous to have the seat too high than too low. yes pedalling is better when the seat height is optimized for her size, but that's not where she's at right now.... at least from what i read. actually it's kinda weird but when i see some of the bikes you guys post here i find them weird looking... then i realized why. the saddles are all too high for riding the trails here. XC bikes are like that... high for pedalling. but for confidence and clearance on steeper trails (pointing down), low seats are the norm. same concept behind having some clearance on the top tube.... especially for us guys. so scooter, go for it. learn on flat parking lot... seat down. aaaah, reminds me when i use to learn doon sa cultural centre.

yup have to agree with peachy. if she's a newbie sa sport (biking) it's better that she get the feel of actual riding muna: pedaling around parks, subdivisions etc. before you let her go sa trail (if that is,in fact, what she wants. sakin lang kasi if she doesn't feel like hitting the dirt and just wants to stroll around parks, wag pilitin) so yup a lowered seat, IMO, is necessary to build her confidence muna until she figures out for herself the advantages of a raised seat

and of course it goes the other way around too. DH seat position looks weird as well since parang lazyboy yon position. ha3 at the end, just different purpose.

yung topic para sa gf ni scooter!
Elevate your saddle up to a comfortable point na ma extend mo ang legs mo properly for a dismount or sudden stop..........saka if the saddle is too low magliliyab ang quads mo agad mga 10 mins pa lang! ;D

i learned from these tips..
my girl will get her bike soon as well.. - i think its advisable to keep the seat height where she's comfortable then gradually increase it..
scooter, what kind of bike are you getting for your girl?

Uy nice idea taking your girlfriend to go mountainbiking. Problem is my girlfriend wants to try DH, ayaw daw nya XC kasi she doesn't want to climb. Should I take her straight to a DH course? I dont know rin what bike to lend her, my dh race bike or my FS trail bike. The DH bike could be safer and mas comfortable kasi its really made for DH... Maybe I should let her try both first.
Any suggestions on a relatively easy DH trail? Ideal ba sa tagaytay?

@ puregutz: i second peachy.. brad, unless your girls nick is the same as yours, you've got to be kidding! the string is about newbie riders and how to keep it safe for beginners -- IMHO, if she hasn't ridden in a while, take her around the village to get used to the bike she'll use.. i don't think its wise to bring her DH on her 1st day.. -- heck, i didn't even consider that on my first trail ride.. hope you'll reconsider - hehe..take her to the bunny slopes first..she'll learn the fundamentals there.. my 2 cents..

this topic reminds me of the time i forced my gf to go biking in muntinlupa trails (xc lang). ohhhh boy! she got scared and cried in the middle of the trail. it was a slow and silent ride going back to the car. total ride time = 7 minutes ;D just make sure your gf or wife is ready for xc or downhill biking. if she has the guts to go down stairs or drop at least 1.5 ft, then you know shes ready ninjabiker
