A lot of people get confused with what it is and what they are doing..Just wanted to generalize and differentiate what the differneces are between the 3.. correct me if im wrong but i would say the pedal kick/hop requires pedal force in order to launch the bike up and forward.. while the bunny hop requires no pedal force but relys on exerted upward body force tp launch the bike.. tama ba? analysis ko lang to based on my experiences.. ;D the terms i used are the best way that i can relate my personal process of execution.. comments appreciated

The bunnyhop and j-hop is the same that it doesn't require a pedal turn (more on weight shifting), pedal kick is different because you get to hop using pedal force and a little weight shift too...
More terms are used nowadays cause more riders are able to do things now, me, I still can't j-hop but I could bunnyhop...

bunnyhop uses the preloading of your body (on a hardtail), shock (on an Full suspension bike) which brings both wheels up (in my opinio thats why they say na mababa ang hops nila 'coz you hop both your wheels together)
j-hop which is the new term uses the technique a the letter j implies but inverted.... when you reach an obstacle you pull up your front wheel then as the front wheel comes over the obstacle you jump and push your haddle bars forward to pull your back wheel... so in one fluid motion its like the letter j but inverted!!!!!!
ans lastly the hardest of the three (until now di ko pa kaya ito) pedal kick uses the pedal to surge forward and jump up or down an obstacle......
i hope this answers you questions!!!!!! if not feel free to ask me and i will research more for you!!!!!!!!!!!!
THANKS!!!!!!!!

i can pop a bunny hop or j-hop at any given time but pedal kick is really difficult. i just couldnt balance my bike (on rear wheel before kicking the pedal) even for one second.

i think we really need to build a trials bike to achieve this. super light 12" frame (without saddle), long stem, 22 t chainring and tubeless tires. it would be cool though to master this on a mountain bike. sigh....

i tried to practice the pedal kick but it's very difficult to balance J-hop and bunny hop, yeah, i can lift them up but sometimes both wheels ;D and as what alien described, when you lift both wheels together it's as if your hop is low, so now i'm practicing the manual/bunnyhop combined ;D here is another site with quicktime packed videos on various tricks: www.trials-online.com/the-videos.phpright click on the item then "save target as" then save on a folder to download the file. remember that you have to have Quicktime player to play these files ;D hope this helps, practice guys, then teach me how ;D ;D ;D

yes you could do pedal kicks on different king of bikes but to really get it up over walls and gaps you should use a trials bike!!!!!!! IMHO!!!!!

i know what you mean but to build a trials bike just to learn how to execute it is a bit of the extreme

baligtad naman sakin.....i feel more comfortable with pedal kick. as far as bike type is concerned....it should not necessarily be the lightest bike, but a responsive and balanced bike is what comes into mind. responsive in the sense that when you do a pedal kick or a wheelie the front pops easily; or when you shift your weight you dont have to be in an awkward position or feel awkward while doing it; balanced in the way that you know and feel where your center of gravity is whatever position/angle the bike may be in. so my tip is get the frame that you really feel comfortable with (and hope that you can use it for free ride)
