Wonder how the crankset will look like. FROM CYCLINGNEWS.COM Shimano has yet to release official information on the new crankset and brake offerings, but spy images that recently surfaced on a Dutch web site ....... Here is the link to the Dutch website. www.dirty-pages.net/nieuws/nieuwsitem.php?id=26787Some images from that website. I'm not so impressed by the looks of this new XTR Crankset. I'll just settle for the XT Hollowtech II on the looks department.

[glow=yellow,2,300]Looks to me like more of a down-grade rather than an upgrade.
Besides, Would it improve your performance or just plain pimpin' your ride? Ah! All that marketing strategy are crapping out just to justify the skyward price.
To me 8-speed still works best on climbing. Unfortunately, Shimano decided to down-grade to 9-speed and won't admit their mistake. And... we're paying for it! Loko talaga! [/glow]

The rear derailleur would be worth running at 129g, saves you about ~71grams (M960 short cage: 200+) Just like Warlock, I'm a sucker for X-men, X-factor, & eXcalibur, really! The cassette looks not so neat at 224g (only 26 grams difference) given the cost and how long the Ti cogs will likely last I'd still be inclined in using my ol' but reliable M960. But, this is just me... You know I could be wrong or whatsoever...

that cassette looks nice. wonder if the individual cogs will be available for replacement (probably not, at least here anyway).

Shimano brakes the XTR mouldcyclingnewsShimano has released details and official photos of the brakes that will be part of its new XTR group, expected to be available later this year. In keeping with the company's unofficial slogan for the new group - "lots of options" - Shimano will offer a separate hydraulic brake lever at XTR level for the first time, the BL-M975. The new lever has clearly been designed with weight reduction as a main priority, and also to be as compact as possible after users of Shimano's last generation of Dual Control combined brake/gear levers complained that they needed a lot of handlebar room. Shimano has tucked the main oil reservoir into the lever mount and redesigned the hose routing so the levers won't interfere with each other. The new Rapidfire Plus gear shifter trigger is designed to sit tidily against the lever. At the wheel end, Shimano has introduced a new design of disc rotor, following from the previous Center Lock design. The new rotor will be available in four different sizes: a rear-only 140mm version, plus 160, 180 and 203mm for front or rear. To save weight, Shimano has come up with a spoked carrier design with a very pared down steel braking surface. The BR-M975 disc brake caliper itself doesn't look much different from the current BR-M965 model, with an opposed two-piston design and a one-piece forged body. Shimano says it has improved heat dissipation and brake feel by the use of titanium backing plates for the brake pads, and also claims a 50 percent increase in durability of the resin pads (sintered metal pads will also be available). Shimano will also continue to make V-brakes at the XTR level, though here the design has hardly changed at all since the first XTR V-brakes; certainly the new model resembles the M951 brake of a few years ago closely enough that they could be coming out of the same moulds. Shimano says that the matching BR-M970 lever has a redesigned blade./JS

i think the bling focus is OA. i kinda miss the subtle elegance of the subdued hues they used in previous models. and they could have saved more weight if they kept it simpler.
just my two cents worth. i still like my XTRs from various year vintages.

well.... at least Shimano is evidently pouring a lot of money on it's R&D. If not we might be seeing same forms of components with just variations of colors. *cough* like SRAM ;D Now it seems they heed the call to part from integrated/modular way of thinking like the 06 DCL, hence the separate shifter & brake assembly. I wonder how much the new XTR hydro brake set will be

I'm glad I quit playing the upgrade game... I'm finally over that disease called upgraditis. I quit buying parts that are not compatible with other manufacturers. My current bike only has two shimano items... XTR brake levers and XT hollowtech II cranks. Oh, and the SS cog is a steel shimano bmx. No compatibility issues here.
My geared bike as has full XTR drivetrain (minus the cranks) and XTR v-brakes, but it's 8sp. I have an extra cassette and chains, but I've only ridden it 5 times in the last 18 months so it will last me a lifetime at this pace. It functions well, so no need to buy new parts.
Call me a retro grouch, but I'm not falling for their marketing hype anymore. Don't get me wrong I think they make good products that function well, but this is just another XTR gruppo that I probably won't own (unless it's at a deep discount).

Guess the price will still be stagerring, I'll probably wait out for those who will swap their 960 series with 970s. OT: But I really dig someone's honda element this is just another XTR gruppo that I probably won't own (unless it's at a deep discount).

When the new XTR becomes available we should do a price comparison between Phils and the US. I know items that have been out a few years are much more expensive in the US, but I never priced items that were just released. I'd be willing to get US prices and posting them in USD and PHP equivalent. OT: Thanks warlock, the Element is a cool vehicle for biking, camping and other outdoor activities. I'm surprised they're not available in Phils, I bet they would sell. I see lots of CRVs and they share the same engine and similar platform. How popular are they in Japan? They've been producing them for many years and only started importing to the US in 2003. Guess the price will still be stagerring, I'll probably wait out for those who will swap their 960 series with 970s. OT: But I really dig someone's honda element

yeah that would be good idea, but observing the past release, there's been a huge difference in price, even the shimano can compete with sram's pricing which is other way around stateside. Even here in JP where the XTRs are made... it'll be 3~4 times.
OT: I saw few elements here, guess its not that popular...but considering the VERY wide selection of models guess I wont be seeing a similar model on the same street at one time...there's lots of sporty minivans... pimped subcompacts which looks like a mini one....and the Hummer H3 ;D
