Subject: Clipperton Video at Antibes, France
My friend Kirstie sent me this from her Clipperton Expedition this
year. My trip there in the mid 90's was similar with inshore
sharks...although I found some Galapagos sharks and Silky sharks
offshore. Eyewitness accounts from fishermen detailed to us that
longline fishing boats and even factory ships were seen at Clipperton
taking sharks of all kinds by the hundreds. My experiences worldwide
are similar...where sharks should be ..they aren't... and this is
alarming. For those non-divers that I have sent this e-mail to for
awareness ..simply put...sharks are opportunists who hunt the sick and
old..which in turn leaves the young and healthy fish stocks. Remove
this culling and the ocean gets sick rapidly and our food resource
along with it. Being that sharks do not breed quickly and bountifully
enough to counter the pressure they are under. So sound the alarm
bell now!! In my estimation, we have reached the tipping point
already or are rapidly closing in on it. A moratorium on shark fishing
for a few years is the answer.
The lesson I took away from Clipperton is: Even though this pristine,
isolated place should thrive naturally...the true lesson is if it is
unguarded..then it can and will be systematically raped for greed and
profit to the detriment of us all. I am not trying to pontificate here
...but just be an observer..and pass on what I see...and what other
voices chorus ...such as in this film.

Subject Clipperton Video at Antibes, France
Hello Alicia, Roberto, Kirstie & Mike,
Just wanted to let you all know that the little 5 minute podcast video
I put together on "Conrad Limbaugh and the Sharks of Clipperton
Island" made it into the Antibes, France Underwater Film Festival!
It will be shown as the last short film of the Friday night show,
October 26th. My husband, Steve Perez, and I will be traveling to
France to attend the showing.
Since all of you are so much a part of that little video, I wanted to
let you all know, and to thank you again for all your help and for the
images that make the film what it is. It is very much a collective
effort! The version that will be shown at Antibes is nearly identical
to the one I put up as DiveFilm Podcast Video Episode 43, and you can
download a QuickTime version of it at:
divefilmarchive.com/movs/limclip.html
And tonight the video will open the Saturday evening program of the
San Diego UnderSea Film Exhibition held at the stunning new Qualcomm
Hall. Pioneer underwater cinematographer Chuck Nicklin will be the
MC, and the evening finale will be a short film by Howard & Michele
Hall.
I am hopeful that after the holidays, I can get back to work on Part
Two of the Clipperton Podcast which includes interviews with Scripps
scientists and long-time fishermen.
Anyway, my heartfelt appreciation to you all for making this little
video what it is!
Mary Lynn
