I need a VA (Volunteer Assistant) for a photoshoot assignment. Experience NOT required. I'm willing to take 2 VAs at most. The date is on Jan.20, 2007 Time: roughly 8am-12nn. The venue is in Ortigas area. We can meet anywhere from Chinatown to Welcome Rotunda QC to St.Lukes Hospital area on my way to the place. The occasion is a baby girl's 1st birthday on Feb and this is a PRACTICE shoot at their home to get acquainted with the celebrant, their parents, grandparents and other relatives. Getting acquainted means knowing which side of the face of each VIP in the family is best, and of course, being a baby photographer means being patient, and taking hundreds of shots and knowing how to convert a cry into a smile and vice versa. This is easily the most enjoyable work in the world! So... If you always wanted to try photography as a (racket) sideline but don't know how to start, well... here's an actual peek of how it's done. Those who like to join me (even if you don't have a camera, I'll lend you my small cam), PM me here, give your name and cellphone numbers. You don't have to shoot, but I want you to hold a camera because that's your passport in getting close to the celebrant. Thank you!

To give credit where credit is due. The group shots were all taken by the WIFE of SAMO HUNG (LaMein owner). I think we had a dozen takes. Mrs. Samo Hung was an eager cowgirl, trigger happy, I tell ya. The wife is the noodle puller, cashier and now photographer also. ;D The shot was first taken with no flash, the exposure was too dark. We used the built-in flash (which was located on the left side of the camera). Only Alain (Biker2006) and I were properly illuminated, Mike (Prof.Charlie) and friend were not. We used an external flash with a sync function to simultaneously provide lighting with the built-in flash, over-exposure resulted and everybody's face was washed out. We set the external flash to 1/4 power and still we got a little over-exposure. We set the external flash to 1/8 power and finally, we got an acceptable shot. Digital is very nice because we get to learn from trial and error. The secret of learning is putting solutions to memory, so next time we have a group shot using Charlie's camera we know that setting the external sync slave flash at 1/8 power would give us a brightly rendered shot. As you can see from the photo, the shadows at the wall is a distraction. It can be minimized if we asked the waiter to stand on top of a chair, raising his hand holding the flash and had the flash directed downwards. We didn't ask him to do that since that would be imposing too much already... ;D Or we could be to use the external flash at maximum power and directed it to the ceiling (bounce flash). That would work if the ceiling was low and painted white, but that wasn't the case. Or we could bounce the flash at max power to a white or silver umbrella or have the flash go through a diffuser (the bigger the better), and get a soft effect (instead of harsh) flash. To this we thank LaMien Noodlehouse for accommodating our photo lessons for the day. ;D A plugging on the side: La Mien Noodlehouse is opening a new branch soon opposite Metropolitan Hospital, right between 7-Eleven and Goldilocks Bakeshop. So next time we have a LaMien get-together, please specify the branch. They're building branches all over noodletown! FYI...

Thanks to Prof. Charlie (Michael) who came in looking good for the photo work last night (must have spent a long time fixing his hair and arriving late... I wanted to choke him to death). This is my favorite pic taken by the Professor. ;D

I love to meet people who belong to the 10% category rare breed of photograhers who think and shoot!
The rest of us, who are events photographers or photojournalists belong to the other 90%, we have a deadline to meet, have time constraints, and most of the time, simply trigger happy.
