with the advent of digital slr's, i have noticed that the artistry of the old school photography has been less this days... magics of photoshop is quite irritating at times... the essence and tricks that only the photographers with "bakals" (film cameras) can do are slowly deminishings... for old time's sake... pics please... anyone?

One reason that digital (over film) is making it big in the photography world is convenience.
No films to buy/handle/load/unload/process/print.
Inspite that films have better colors and resolution, the fact that in digital you can look at the viewfinder (this is called chimping, like an ape who loves to stare at his banana before eating it), the fact that you can reshoot if the exposure/timing wasn't right.
Another advantage of digital is the speed of shooting in sequence. in film, you have to wind it manually or use a battery operated auto-winder.
So, only the hard-core film photographers will stay with film. I have friends who still prefer film, and the colors/resolution are just unbeatable. Of course they have to have it scanned using a high res machine, additional step/hassle.
Another problem with film, by the way, is this: I cannot borrow his work to show them to you, simply because we don't have the film, they were submitted to the client.
So getting a film photo would be hard to find nowadays!

Wow just saw this thread. I didn't even know about the other topics in the forum (newbie in the forums). Let me dig up my archives to revive this thread. I'd love to see more film shots since it seems that digital photographers are finally moving back or, at least, taking interest in the foundations again. ... be right back.

patiently waiting for your posts and gladly appreciating them... Okay here's to reviving this thread: This is my LAST film shot in the Advertising world taken over 6 years ago! Translation: There are no more requirements for film. Every single company out there is asking for digital files. Anyway here it is: This is a very poor scan of the image and shows a very "digital tone". The slides are sooo much better! That's it for now. It'll take me a while to dig up my analogue archives. Anyone here still using film?

i doubt sir if theres even one who still uses films here nowadays, its so costly and inconvenient, i for one would want to get a decent digital cam. i am not a pro tho, i have 3 cameras that i dont use anymore because it requires dough for films and developing and printing. my humble gears are yashica fx3, minolta dynax and nikon FM2 body which was almost not used. im thinking of disposing the minolta and nikon to raise fund for a nikon d40.

my first cam was a film cam, SLR pa nga, but i love my digital now. honestly i don't see much difference in output unless siguro if you're a pro and you use the product for print. of course digital allows you to cheat while shooting and during processing, but if you stick to the raw image files, pareho rin sa film if you're just a hobbyist like me (this is my ignorant opinion hehe).
however i think there's ground for griping against the loss of old school discipline that film forces you to develop. digital is too forgiving pero nasa photographer naman yan. kaya madaming purists who still prefer film. i guess i'm an impurist. ;D

I think the purists prefer film simply because the dynamic range and tones are still unequaled. Inspite of HDR technology, the photos lack that character that only film produces. The only digital camera I know that came quite close to film is the Fuji S3 Pro. When treated correctly and printed by durst lambda it actually can pass for film print!
On another note, I personally hate the work flow of digital. If you are particularly anal about the quality of your tones and the consistency of your colors, the digital world gives you a whole new bunch of head aches. First of all, what you see in your LCD is completely different from what you see in your computer. Have those photos treated and again they're different in print. It simply means you have to calibrate your monitor every so often, keep abreast with the color profiles of your printers - this varies from paper to paper and from machine to machine. ... I'll continue this later. I'm getting a head ache now!

Nice shot Jef. Here is one of my favorite pics due to the reason that I took it by chance : During an outing with the tropa years ago, I woke up to find the moon about to set as the sun is about to rise. The pic is not too bongga but I was glad to capture the morning's weird (but natural) pinkish-purplish tinge probably due to the moonset-sunrise happening almost at the same time. Taken using an old Yashica given to me by my pops. (I think I posted it here before, not too sure though)

wow!!! nice to hear oldskul guys. I just took my trusty old Minolta X-700 2weeks ago for a shoot after 9 years of sitting in the Camera bag. I was surprised it even worked. I got it 1984 during my college days. After my Nikon Coolpix chonked out again (4 cameras now) 2 nikons and 2 canon powershot. now junked. I had no choice but to use my Film SLR. It was like the old days ,composing , studying the light and visualizing how it would come out and the excitment of developing it. After finishin the 36 shot I had to rush to a 1 hr photo shop to have a contact print and CD copy. What a feeling looking at the contact prints. This you dont anymore get from a digital camera.
I'll try also to look for my shots way back 90's on moutainbiking so i can also share my shots
