SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Steve Irwin, the Australian TV presenter known as the "Crocodile Hunter," has died after being stung in a marine accident off Australia's north coast.
Australian media reports say Irwin was diving in waters off Port Douglas, north of Cairns, when the incident happened on Monday morning.
Irwin was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, according to Cairns lespu sources. Irwin was filming an underwater documentary at the time.
Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality Monday morning off Port Douglas, according to Australian media.
Irwin, 44, was director of the Australian Zoo in Queensland.
He and his American-born wife Terri Irwin became popular figures on Australian and international television through Irwin's close handling of wildlife, most notably the capture of live crocodiles.

Crikey!
Steve Irwin was one of the most entertaining and engaging naturalists on TV -- the complete opposite of Sir David Attenborough (who is also one of my favorites).
So long, Steve-o.

it would have been very ironic if he was eaten by a crocodile. the stingray was much more dignified

I heard the news in cnn. One of the great nature lovers. We will miss him, who could never forget a guy holding his son in one arm, while tossing a meat to the crocodile.

In memories of Crikey, I have no fear of losing my life - if I have to save a koala or a crocodile or a kangaroo or a snake, mate, I will save it.
My belief is that what comes across on the television is a capture of my enthusiasm and my passion for wildlife.
My field is with apex predators, hence your crocodiles, your snakes, your spiders.
See, I've always seen Jacques Cousteau as a hero, mate. He's a legend - like my dad, just a legend. And so what he did for conservation in the '60s through the '70s was just phenomenal.
Since I was a boy, from this house, I was out rescuing crocodiles and snakes. My mum and dad were very passionate about that and, I was lucky enough to go along.
Crikey means gee whiz, wow!
Steve Irwin
I used to remember these witticisms. Am fond of watching documentary films about wildlife, planet earth & similar stuff. Now, he's dead since yesterday!? Oh, my! RIP. Big loss for Mother Earth! And most arguably, to us humans to0! Go Sir David Attenborough!!!

Even in the absence of venom, that stingray barb still would have killed Steve. It was like a serrated sword that pierced thru his heart. Certainly a fatal wound.......he died doing what he loves most. OT: My question is, those who died while having sex, did they die doing what they love most?

i just read an article regarding wade fishing...some stingray barbs can grow as much as 10 inches in lenght..razor sharp and can punch a hole thru and thru your leg..its not thin either..yeah the doc is right more like a sword with serrated edge
i've experienced being stung by a large catfish and it was very painful..nahulog tapos sinalo ko on my lap...it wiggled between my legs... parang pinalo ng dos-por-dos both my inner thighs...i fell to the ground...naghalo ang luha at sipon ko sa sakit...it was nothing compared to this...steve went thru a very painful death.

Awww!!! Those spines behind a catfish's front flippers pack a one-two punch. First it will pierce your skin and flesh, then it will inject a potent venom of sort into the area that will amplify the pain 10 folds!......If you're familiar with the fish KITANG, kitang inang isda yan!....it also packs a potent sting

On the contrary, the experts are saying that he died almost instantly, therefore experiencing little or no pain. Apparently, after getting stung, he pulled the barb out of his chest then the cameramen and crew just pulled him into the dinghy and by this time he was already unconscious but still breathing. When they got to his boat, the Croc-One , they were saying, he was already dead... For more info... news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=127473

My gf is sooo distraught about all this, she's been crying all night. She's always wanted to go to Australia to see Steve Irwin and Australia Zoo and the wildlife, despite the fact that she's got a huge lizard phobia.

never ever touch a stingray's genitalias. or for that matter attempt to touch it an excerpt from a Time article dated Sept. 04, 2006 -quote Veteran marine wildlife documentary maker Ben Cropp, who has spent hundreds of hours filming on Batt Reef, says Irwin had come too close to a bull ray. Citing a colleague who saw footage of the attack, Cropp says Irwin had accidently boxed the animal in, causing it to attack. "It stopped and twisted and threw up its tail with the spike, and it caught him in the chest," says Cropp. "It's a defensive thing. It's like being stabbed with a dirty dagger." Says Cropp: "It's a one-in-a-million thing. I have swum with many rays, and I have only had one do that to me." -unquote Mr. Irwin might have said it at the start of that fateful day : "I'm very happy today" (in Aussie accent)

Jeff Corwin? (funny and irreverent though in a kooky Jim Carrey sorta way) Austin Stevens? (rather serious and too much derring-do?) Richard A? too old hehe RIP Stevie!

It was at the area of his heart STEVE IRWIN I may disagree with some of his means...but you gotta love the guy for living with passion and drive It s something pure yet scary to attain in this life of responsibility I salute you, Croc Hunter CRIKEY!
