i'll check out those 3 books whoopi. I also like reading biographies or autobiographies of businessmen and successful people, philosophy, inspirational speeches - those seem to be my mood for the quarter. Never really thought about science essays until you mentioned it. That Lobster book is getting me curious. I wonder if we have it here. Sounds like a twisted view on human nature. I'll check it out as well as those 2 other books. You must have an interesting library whoopi.

@oceanrider: ;D not twisted at all, it's real science. animal behavior is actually quite fascinating. ;D you like philo and science--i highly recommend annie dillard's PILGRIM AT TINKER CREEK. philosophical musings on the natural world, the prose is elegant too. you probably have to order that one online. i found my tattered copy at a Book Sale outlet many years ago. i don't really recommend A WALK IN THE WOODS, not bill bryson's best work, which to me is A SHORT HISTORY OF NEARLY EVERYTHING, the best science-for-the-layman book i've read so far. my friend struggled in the beginning, but once she got going, she understood why i liked it so. the sense of awe at the world around us is great. all this talk and the overcast sky outside make me want to go home and curl up in bed with a good volume

Finished marla streb’s diary… err… life story book pala. sa wakas! 4 days ago… When I bought this book, I thought I would just read about her fast-pace downhill mountain biking career, but I was wrong. In her book, she delved about her being pissed-off from the grind of normal life... From being a research scientist, to a recreational rider (mountain and road), then to a cross-country racer, then finally to become a world-class downhill racer… Maybe you would ask why it took me a long time to finish an almost 300 page book… well, to tell you the truth, she lost me. She lost me when she rambled about off-topics... I think the off-topics made the book a terrible flop. It’s not like any other book that I will gladly take in the toilet when I take a dump… it’s just a waste of time. Before I got the chance to finish it, I found another book. An old book gathering dust in our house and it got my undivided attention and some hours from my slumber. What’s the title of the old book? Banner in the sky. If she’d only wrote more about the downhill competitions the technicalities… the book would be a success. The only time I read about a downhill course is when she wrote about how a fellow downhiller describes the course as: “ack-ack-ack…” Sorry marla, your life story book is just too plain compared to jon krakauer’s storytelling of chris/alex mccandless’ stupid adventure. ;D One chili. Oh, to add... marla streb’s photo without a helmet… c’mon guys, it’s just a book cover! Loosen your necktie for a change! ;D

Max , you'll love this new psychology book I'm reading
On Killing , The Psychologial Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society by LtCol Dave Grossman
Review- Col Grossman's study ends wlth a profoundly troubling observation. The desensitizing techniques used to train soldiers are now found in mass media - films , TV and video games- and are conditioning our children. His figures on youthful homicides suggest the breeding of teenage Rambos.

Recently finished two - A Simple Habana Melody by Oscar Hijuelos and Wired - A Romance by Gary Wolf. A constant companion is Walden and Other Writings by Thoreau. When you need to feel peace and enjoy the passing of time. I wish Robert Pirsig also wrote about bicycles after Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

While Lance Armstrong's It's Not About the Bike was published after his successs at the second Tour, reading it is a good guide in understanding how he went on winning the coming Tours until 2005 along with the unrelenting charges of doping. After reading Armstrong's book, a funny read is Tim Moore's French Revolutions: Cycling Tour de France.
