one thing that ruins the season for me is firecrackers (or maybe it's because i live in bulacan). why do people have to light them up in the streets? if they find the noise so awesome why not do it inside their own homes, with all the doors and windows locked up, so the bang would really be worth the buck they spent. saves the public from danger and nuisance pa. buti pa sa davao. *sigh*

yes, sad to say, we have a bastardized culture, that a lot of people just bang and even loose their fingers with firecracker blast and don't even know why they have to light up firecrackers and make noise during the new year. chinese use firecrackers as part of their tradition and belief that making noise when welcoming the new year drives away the evil spirits. but they they do it safely and will notice that their pyrotechnics are mostly remotely fired (not held by hand as most filipino-designed firecrakers are), and you may notice as well that chinese fires their firecrackers a couple of minutes before new year. i don't see anything wrong with welcoming new year with firecrackers ala chinese way, but what i see wrong is the bastardized and wrongful practice of using firecrackers (and even guns) in the guise of welcoming the new year with a bang. in my house, we have a voluntary ban on firecrackers. i can't see the logic of burning money on such useless so called tradition. but that's just me HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!!! Ingat if you intend to fire up those plaplas, remember.... an incomplete digit may somehow affect mtb handling.....hehehe

As a little boy growing up with Dad, my father would spend fortunes just so our address will be the loudest and noisiest spending New Year's Eve year after year. I tell you. The bawang made in Bocaue circa 1950-60 packed such powerful blast, it could literally topple if not elevate up to the air thick oil drums. Anyways, as an obedient son, I would like to follow traditions of dad. I told myself once I grow old and earns buckoo money, my address will be the loudest and noisiest every New Year's Eve.
After I retired from the U.S Marines and returned back to my land of birth, every New Year's Eve, my address is the quietest and loneliest looking home in the village. Why? What happened to traditions and promises I made to dad?
Simple. I lived thru the most powerful explosions imagineable day after day, year after year, while actively serving the U.S Marines. We handle such destructive arsenal with care. It is serious business. I've been trained to be a professional re handling of explosives. And so it goes today even with tiny leventador, and triangulo, not to include plapla and noisier bawangs and atomiks...they should be fired with outmost care. Unfortunately, fireworks being sold nowadays are not as safe as yester 1950-60 years. Kanya I stopped observing this new year's eve tradition of driving evil spirits away altogether...now that I am older and can afford to buy some. Mag-upgrade na lang kaya ako?

here's my take. behind our apartment is a squatter's area. i don't mind the noise, i used to live in tondo where there's karaoke every night. but now that i have kids and sleep is such a precious time-off it just sucks when i see kids, like 10 year olds, blowing up fire crackers int he middle of night......at october.... i can tolerate firecrackers as long as they get lighted during the new year. i used to light a few in my younger days but i'm about 7 - 10 feet away from the firecracker. the reason being is warn anyone walking that i lighted up something. it's also nonsense to light it up then run away because of the noise. at least have a place designated to light them. btw, i've seen this firecracker from Bulacan (or is still considered a fire cracker?), it's shaped like an explosive from cartoons. round at the base, then it's got a fuse. my dad had it lighted up at an open lot. too much gunpowder, it exploded with a foot deep crater that is just demented

yes JOES those PVC canons are something else, they're supposed to be 'safe' so people use them more 'inconsiderately'. how crazy can this be: in bulacan, i board a tryke to go to the palengke and this guy riding at the back of the driver keeps firing the canon as we are moving along. then he shouts at people, "malakas ba?" then i'm in the crowded palengke and more guys standing in the sidewalk, right where people are walking by, are firing canons too. never mind us with eardrums right at their elbows. the streets are not pleasant when people are doing this.

'Boga' may be in, but beware of consequences
By Tina Santos, Tarra Quismundo Inquirer Last updated 11:58pm (Mla time) 12/27/2006
A MANILA health official has cautioned parents against letting their children use the "boga"--an improvised cannon fashioned out of a PVC (polyvinyl chloride) pipe which has become a very popular noisemaker among youngsters this holiday season.
Dr. Virgilio Martin, disaster coordinator of the Manila Health Office, said Wednesday that the boga was responsible for eight of the 24 firecracker-related injuries reported from Dec. 1 to 26.
"Last year, we had no reported injuries caused by the boga but now, since it's the ‘in' thing among the youth, we have quite a number of cases this year," Martin said, adding that the figure could still go up if parents do not warn their children.
He noted that most of the victims were children 10 years old and below.
"We're advising the parents not to let their children play with the boga," he added.
[glow=red,2,300]The boga sets off a loud explosion when the user squirts denatured alcohol at the tail end of the pipe and then lights up the mixture with a cigarette lighter or a gas stove igniter that can be activated at the click of a triggering mechanism.
"Most of the victims peeped through the PVC when it failed to explode. Unfortunately, it backfired, causing injuries to their eyes," Martin explained.[/glow]
"The victims suffered from post traumatic conjunctivitis, which, when not treated immediately, may eventually lead to blindness."
Mayor Lito Atienza, meanwhile, invited the public to go to the Baywalk on Dec. 31.
"Just watch the fireworks display at the Baywalk. You don't have to spend for firecrackers because the show is free," he said.
In Makati, the city government and the lespu began to look into regulating the sale and use of the device which the Department of Health wants banned.
Mayor Jejomar Binay on Wednesday ordered the lespu to find out how city officials and law enforcers could impose restrictions on the use of the boga, a common sight this season in neighborhoods throughout Metro Manila.
"We will now make a thorough study so that we can act accordingly. The boga is dangerous because if, for example, you put a tin can inside, you could shoot it out of the pipe," said Binay.
But he admitted that, "off hand," the city has no way of controlling the use and distribution of the device although he promised that the regulations would be drafted by the weekend, in time for New Year's Eve.
"We will study it so by Saturday and Sunday, we can proceed with the implementation," said the mayor.
The Makati lespu Station also started distributing flyers that would discourage the public from using firecrackers which cause injuries every year.
"We will distribute the flyers to the public so that they will be aware of the dangers of firecrackers. As of today, there has been a report that the number of persons injured because of firecrackers has increased compared to last year," said Supt. Victor Loares, the deputy lespu chief.
He added that the lespu would be on full deployment throughout the holiday season.
"All our policemen will be deployed in the field to make sure that every corner of Makati is well secured," Loares told reporters.
