Okay so here's the story...
I read somewhere that the best way to teach you child to ride his/her bike w/o training wheels is to get him/her a scooter. Well, after numerous failed attempts to get my 5-yr old son, Francis, to ride w/o training wheels, I decided to try it out. Got him a scooter a Monday 2 weeks ago.
We went around the neigborhood & he started off just pushing the scooter w/ his foot non-stop. He'd do a couple of meters w/ his pushing foot off the ground so that was good. Three days after, he started actually riding. Sometime last week he started riding his scooter down a gradual downhill section of the neighborhood. He stomped it & loved it that he did it over & over.
Friday last week I decided to test him out w/o the training wheels on his bike. He did first try! Grabe, remember that feeling you had the first time you were ever to balance on two wheels as a kid? I had the same feeling watching him. He still can't start on his own consistently, though.
I'm not done... Last Sunday he wanted to go around the neighborhood on his scooter. So we went out - he had his scooter, I had my hardtail. We were going around this man-made pond/lake when I heard a thud. He was trying to jump off the board & landing w/ his feet on the ground. I told him to try jumping off & landing on the board. He tried & landed one foot on the board & the other on the ground. I said, both feet on the board & he did it after a few tries. I asked him to jump w/ the scooter & you guessed it he tried to do it. He did an endo though so I told him to pull on the handlebar. He did!
But what made my day was when I was playing around w/ my bike & talked w/ this kid on a BMX. While we were chatting, Francis was scooting towards us & crouched on his scooter (just like our crouch before bunnyhopping) & bunnyhopped/ollied his scooter up to about 6" off the ground. The kid & I were floored! I didn't teach him that, he just got it I guess from just watching me. Then when he saw the BMX, he wanted to bike instead. We got his bike & he rode around the neighborhood for a good 20 minutes w/ me running right beside him. ;D ;D ;D
