TOYO Engineering Corp. (TEC) of Japan is planning to put up an integrated facility in northern Luzon to produce the bio-fuel coconut methyl ester, the head of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) said Tuesrday.
The project is estimated to require close to P5 billion in investments.
TEC officials are looking for 600,000 hectares of land for planting new coconut trees, with the yields to be used to produce coconut methyl ester for export to Japan, said newly installed PCA Administrator Oscar Garin.
Japan widely uses methyl ester as fuel or fuel additive, Garin said.
TEC officials "have consulted the agency [PCA] as to how they could develop the project, which could give our replanting program a boost," he said. "Toyo Engineering currently has a temporary facility and conducts operations in Aurora province."
TEC, based in Chiba, Japan, wants to venture into coconut planting and coconut oil production to bring down the cost of coconut methyl ester, which costs P120 a liter, more expensive than petroleum-based fuels.
"Toyo Engineering would want to bring down the cost and is willing to venture into production," PCA Deputy Administrator Carlos Carpio said.
Carpio said the PCA would help TEC look for arable lands in the northern regions of Ilocos and Cagayan Valley to get 600,000 hectares.
"This project is for the medium term, as it takes three years for a coconut seedling to actually produce coconut oil," Garin said.
According to the corporate profile posted on its website (www.toyo-eng.co.jp), TEC operations cover hydrocarbon fields such as general chemicals, petrochemicals, oil refining, natural gas, and oil and gas development; non-hydrocarbon fields such as nuclear energy and power generation; industrial plant fields such as pharmaceutical, fine chemical, and food and beverage, and e-solution fields such as management and business consultation based on information technology) and system design and construction.
Founded in 1961, Toyo Engineering has handled more than 1,400 projects globally, mainly in the plant engineering field, the profile says. It had a consolidated net income of 3.3 billion yen in fiscal year 2005. With INQ7.net
