Mrs. M, Schwing and Makoy, thanks for the encouragement and for giving a better picture of what to expect. Lui-G, yup. I'm the one with the blue vision. That's great for you to do it non-stop. The only thing non-stop for me is the above maximum heart rate ;D ;D ;D Didn't notice you. I must be too tired to notice any SS. A young female jogger even told me, " Manong, kaya pa?". hahahaha I responded to her with full confidence, "kayang-kaya pa. . . nung bike. . . ako. . . ewan." And a veteran biker asked also, "Stucked-up?" which I responded, "Opo, nagstuck-up ...yung rider." It was my first SS climb with lots of alaska (trans. humorous comments) also. Actually, I never thought about doing the tahi-tian move last Saturday and yesterday. I opted to pause for a while. I just saw a rider doing that on my way back yesterday when I realized that I forgot a very important trick. I usually go to Maarat every Sat morning. I'l make sure I'll look for SS'er before going up and find a riding buddy. Hope to see you there.

hi guys... newbie ss'er here... just recently converted my bike to a 32/18 ss.
question:
what's the difference between 7/8 speed chain and bmx chain? do bmx chains have bigger/wider holes?
i'm currently using 7/8 speed chain but i noticed my chain gets stuck on the rear cog. this doesn't happen on the flats. it usually happens during climbs especially those steep ones.
somebody told me i should use a bmx chain masmalaki raw yung holes... is it true? will a bmx chain save me from those gruelling climbs?

Aaronchicharon, maybe the problem is the chain line. A bmx chain's width is much wider and it will help compensate if you don't find the perfect chain line. Most SS'ers have spare chains and don't want to spend on a new chain. Like me, I use an 8 speed chain, and have a 7 speed chain that I used before when my bike was setup 42-18 for bike commutes.
A bmx chain won't save you from gruelling climbs ;D
OT: My gulay (Trans: my vegetable), your avatar is morbid! I have a pic of my toe similar to that, but mine was due to ingrown. ;D

ingrown? or 53x17 up antipolo? and practice makes babies, perfect babies are IG chains 8 speed chains? currently using them on my SS, are they intrinsically noisy?

53-17, were you wearing a mouthpiece when you did that climb? ;D
I use an IG chain and it's noisy too. I'm not sure if my chain is really dirty, that it still gets squeaky (after a few KMs) no matter how much lube I put in it. The lube I use is finish line wet/dry spray type.

@ makoy, yes IG Shimano chains are for 7/8 speeds and so are the HG's. why? how noisy do they get? works good for me. are your chain rings Al? maybe a factor. i use only steel chain rings for my SS's.

got my KMC chain from raven (PinoyMTBiker) / ben in UP. I tried the BMX chain but i find it too heavy making it an extra burden for the tensioner. It is wider also that somehow causes an unusual sound. . . but the BMX chain still works well. I find the KMC single speed specific chain to be better. it is narrower than the BMX chain. definitely lighter ensuring uniform / proper tension despite the inevitable jumps of the tracks.

the last time i did the wall was using my geared bike, the gears were at 34/34 and had to stop as it was already about to do a wheelie and my knees were giving up on me, this was the steepest part i think so. i have never tried my SS's at the wall. i was thinking if a geared one makes it difficult for me what more on a SS. my gear combo on my 2 SS's are 36X18 and 34X17 they are both my commuter and messenger bikes tried them at Canley road in Pasig but assumed the Kiss of Death position to do it. my question would it be doable to use this combo conquering the wall? i bike all the way to MOntalban from Valenzuela, so by the time i hit the wall exhausted already. Same question: Is it possible to climb the "Wall" w/ a 36X18 ratio? It's so difficult to find a 20T rear cog

I run a 36X16 for commuting to the trailhead for reference...

B, Try to get a 32 or 34 chainring with a 20 or 21 in the back (or even a 32X18). You can definitely use a higher gear but you'll find yourself stopping a few times. As it is, I already have to slow down and sit and grind in the short recovery sections with a 32X20 but it's do-able non-stop. I basically stand up and climb from the resort on the left at the start of the wall up to the last switch back right before it flattens out before the store on the right (Mang Romy's?) before the Timberland gate.

kenz, do you mean you're going for a 1 x 10 drive train set-up? if yes, then your 32t is good pero bitin on flats and downhill. Btw, you just posted on a single speed (1 x 1) thread.
