I see a lot of those now in a rigid 29r. Advantage is no fork and shock to maintain. No ghost shifting, no derailleur to adjust. It is simple and a lot lighter.

an SS rig rocks. with excess parts lying around, you can easily build one. also, the simplicity involved is such a blessing. the only problem i've had with it is the looong uphills like the wall in maarat and the distance. it seems i cant go to far flung places on a SS. i bike all the way from my place in Q.C. going to the trails. the only time that i can bring my SS rig is if i bring my transpo. but if its just going to quiapo, i bring my SS. best trail for a SS rig? try irrigation-puray during the wet season. really awesome. try it and you'll thank me for sure, hehe. beats the @#$% out of geared bikes i tell you.

I'm what you may call a dummy biker I'm not good at tinkering on parts. I'll go SS because of its simplicity. Put it on vee and you get minimal part tinkering and the other part seems to be easy to maintain. I want to build an SS for urban riding. If there is such a thing as minimalist design in bicycle, SS is one.

if you overtake a guy riding a geared bike, you're branded a strong rider. if you get dropped or have to push, it's ok because you're on a singlespeed. either way, you cant lose

Simplicity... and silence... . No clang-clang noise specially during descending a rocky trail. Even when bombing down the rig. Also, its very nice to pedal on flats and a challenge to ride on steep uphill.

Me?.. I just wanted to experience the simplicity of an SS ride...... again. When I was in grade school, I used to ride my single speed motobike (the one with coil suspensions on both sides of the rear wheel) to school or anywhere my mom asks me to run errands. I love that bike, used and abused it until the heavy frame just gave up. I was so loyal to that bike that I never had any other bike until the time that I bought my very first MTB 2 years ago. ;D....Having an SS is like having a classic... car, motorcycle, timepiece. Why do I still have my easycall beeper? or that old cellphone the size of my forearm? or that baston pants in my closet? ;D....I dont know....why am I revealing all of these? hehehe. Bottomline is, simplicity is beauty. Classic is elegance. Old is cool, so go oldschool!
Sweets ka na Juwee ;D ;D ;D

SS makes you stronger and compliments your other skills.
For me, I didn't switch to SS and stop all my other types of riding. I still put lots of miles on the roadbike. Most of my trail riding is done on an SS, but I still take the gearie out of a spin now and then. Now I've switch to rigid (mostly because my SID has blown seals and is leaking oil). Riding rigid will help me pick out better lines and ride with a more fluid and smooth style. I can already tell the difference in how much more relaxed I'm riding the FS bike.
You shouldn't have to give up anything to ride SS, instead you're adding to your skill set. Although, it's not for everyone... you really have to enjoy the extra leg burn, and your forearms and back will be much stronger due to all your extra effort on those long steep climbs.
SS may not be using all the advances in mechanical technology, but my bike has the latest in materials technology. None of this really matters though, you are still the engine. Improving the engine will make a bigger difference than improving the bike. I'm pretty sure many of the mainstream manufacturers don't like the upswing in SS riders... when experienced mtbers realize that new technology has little impact in making them a stronger/faster/better riders, they quit buying the latest and greatest (racers may not fit into this generalized category). There's nothing left but the bling factor, which still carries a lot of weight.
I must be the bike manufacturers nightmare. My upgrade-itis has diminished, I only replace parts when they break or wearout, I resurrect old bikes and refurbish them, and I ride SS ;D
Although, I really like that the Maverick DUC fork (darn, there goes my upgrade-itis again). Bottom line, do what makes you happy. It's your money.

I may not be a strong rider, but I'm a stronger rider than before I started SS. You will move to your next level of fitness. I guarantee it.

got another reason why I ride SS: to piss off condescending/pompous/arrogant cyclists in my group. Next project, strip a mall bike (specially one with a neon paint job), convert it to SS and slap on a 36 talas fox, that should get into their nerves!!! ahahaha!!!
