just curious, what factors does one consider for the tires to be "good" in trials?

grip for specific courses ie nature or urban, nature meaning grips well on logs,rocks etc. urban : steel, concrete, wood etc. for trials better go for what pro with sponsors are riding as long as they ride the same way you do.... it because they have gone through all options in that specific brand.

does it follow that if the tires are excellent for nature trials, they're to perform the same way when used for xc riding on the trails?

the Kenda's that hans rey use. refer to picture of hans rey's bike oz i dont know what they are... if he trusts it, probably it is good.

I saw his tires from 2 inches away hehe
@brus : not necessarily, side knobs, materials for sidings arent much looked into since trials is done slowly and lesser tire pressure is used for better grip on logs etc.
