I think my frame has a small balance "area", because the chainstay is quite long. I feel I have a small balance area because (on a manual) its quite easy to drop the front or fall on my back while its hard to recover by balancing my position side to side and front to back. I want to learn to manual as long as I want .. well atleast for a couple of meters.
Aside from practice and more practice, does BB +/- height affects the balance point as much as chainstay length?
Please post your experience with your balance point , did a different frame help you?
O kulang lang ako sa practice? BTW I could somehow backhop a bit but I think I most definitely lack practice on that.
Thanks for the help.

One time I do wheelies, I'm having the same problems and I think you should experiment with your geometry...
did you try what the other rider adviced you, to use only one finger in using your brakes...
One problem I don't encounter is that I don't practice on backhops yet, I'm good at pivoting now (bragging)hehehe
Or maybe you should cheat and use "that" frame of joey hehehe

konablack Which "that" frame? The sputnik? Guys any idea how much an giant STP frame is? is it available here? The chainstay of that frame is so short. The shorter the chainstay the larger the balance area, tama ba?.

update on this topic, I got a 100mm stem and everything made sense. I'm on my way to making a longer manual.

patrick - does a longer top tube or stem help you in doing manuals? i've been practicing manuals lately. still trying to find my sweet spot though.

ask alien he's riding a sputnik re long TT, just keep on practicing with a fork like yours your short stem would be fine. In my case I have a light fork with about an inch and a half of travel. I definitely need a long stem. I might get a longer one though maybe a 120 mm stem. Too bad the stem-handlebar combo like the one used by Hans Rey was sold ( I went to cycle art to get it, I saw it 2 months back ).
Important thing to know is your balance point is farther back than you think.
I can do short manuals at the moment I just found my balance point, I expect to improve in the next few months. I can manual longer if I'm running slow but I believe the secret is speed.
My long term goal is to manual to lurch to sidehop that's why im learning at slow speed.

joes: try a little speed and pull up on the bars and use your legs to balance!!!!!! since my accident!!!!! i'm a little scared in doing those manuals and wheelies 'coz if i fall back i might sick out my legs and bend my knees again!!!! @partick: try the jhop on a curb then do a manual!!!!!

alien : help me with the jhop thing dude, since I fell on my back and had the rib fracture thing Im afraid to pull too much on the bars. I really want to learn that. Its quite hard to land on the rear you have to pull the bike forward and up. joes : come with us sometime we often ride saturdays.

that's what they've been telling me. the key to doing manuals is speed. i do the "kadyot" technique. i use my arse and legs to balance the bike. i just started practicing manuals after buying better brakes. hope i can get to learn this.
where do you guys meet?

we usually meet at ccp lugawan near aliw theater.
you have to learn to feather your brakes. Speed is how to cheat a manual (the best way hehe). The important thing to learn is balance, once you have it you can execute a manual in diff conditions

just came back from a night ride. saw some urban militia guys hanging out at baywalk. anyway, i know that place patrick. what time do you guys meet there? we hang out at the corner store lugawan. i've placed a sticker on the marker on the corner. all i remember is it's named "sotto." we usually ride on thursday evenings. - look for this sticker. hehehehe. i think i've placed quite a few of these around the baywalk and intramuros areas. i think there's one in makati. tordesillas cor buendia. dunno though if it's still there.

I just tried to do a manual on a 16" Dabomb sputnik. I guess it used to be yours alien. Man, it was effortless to manual. If I had one I think I can manual a block in a months time (exag hehe)

ha. i thought so. i need better modulation on my brakes. i tuned the brakes so that the lever would be closer to my index finger, sacrificing the modulation i get with the longer travel. i'm using em cheap deore v-brake levers for my avid bb7s. think i need a lever upgrade. maybe them SL7s. i'll think about it. konablack - thanks for the link.

went practicing again yesterday. i think i need to learn how to center my weight on my hips rather than my back when i pull on the handle bars. i've been learning the hagod or stroke more efficiently, though sometimes am surprised with the force that i excert when i pull back. also, practicing manuals has improved other aspects of my skills. i've learned how to bunnyhop more efficiently with this. and i've been able to do DJs with a finger on the brake lever. i now firmly believe that most bike skills that you need start with wheelies and manuals.

Your levers are fine joes. Just set them farther towards the stem and lock quite near the grips so you'll have a relaxed feel on the fingers. Learn to manual with bent knees. My frame kinda suck when it comes to manuals so I compensate by throwing my butt farther back before actually pulling on the bars. Learn to manual using brakes only as an option to save yourself when you over pull. Its a good practice doing it with your balance, it will take you longer but its worth it. My manuals has been improving a bit I could actually hold it a bit longer, because I can actualy "feel" that im on a manual ... probably because Im practicing backhoping as well. My backhop is better than my manual though ... translation: I still suck on both. konablack: hope we can ride again soon dude.

Did you stay with vees konablack? Im going for vees but for the rear only. Regarding your question, a bit of a rise is fine but those long stem with quite some rise are for mods (20" frames). Do you want to ride tomorrow? Practice tayo, better near my house (i have some platforms now, they are actually cabinets for the store but for the meantime they are for biking hehe) BTW Are you running single speed now? You should have gotten those SORA casette and RD. Cheap and light, excellent for trials.
