January 5, 2005– Morgan Hill, CA - Thanks to his BMX lineage and progressive stunts such as the Superman seat grab and 360° drops, Specialized Factory rider Darren Berrecloth was selected to be one of the first athletes to be featured on the Discovery Channel’s new series, Stunt Junkies. Each 60-minute episode of Stunt Junkies takes viewers behind the scenes of an unimaginable stunt, for a close look at what it’s like to push the limits of personal expression and defy danger.
During the filming of Darren’s episode, the Discovery Channel paid a visit to Specialized, the people that provide Darren with his boundary busting bikes. The film crew got an inside look at how Berrecloth’s latest rig, a 2006 Specialized Demo 8, was engineered, tested and built. With the Discovery Channel cameras rolling, Berrecloth even took the time to launch from a two-story high loading dock into the Specialized warehouse. “We’ve had a lot of interesting things happen around the office in the past 30 something years, but nothing that crazy,” says Specialized founder and president, Mike Sinyard.
From Morgan Hill, it was off to Utah in the search for the hair-raising stunt, a virgin line down the side of a sandstone cliff, that would be the highlight of Berrecloth’s episode. After using a helicopter to scout the boulder strewn bluffs of Southwestern Utah for the perfect line, Darren had his spot--a never-before-dropped descent that had never been hiked let alone ridden. A few cans of Red Bull and a day’s filming later, and Berrecloth had finished off one of the most thrilling Stunt Junkies episodes to date. “I am always pushing myself to learn new things and see new places; it’s what makes me tick,” says the 24 year-old B.C. resident.
