from mountain bike magazine:
How do I ride down steps?
Q. Riding down steps looks cool. Can you teach me how?
A. Greg Randolph: Riding steps looks easy because it is. Most steps are built at an angle that a mountain bike can easily handle without flipping forward.
* Select a forgiving, unoccupied flight of steps. Know the obstacles that may await at the bottom and roll over the edge at a jogging-pace speed. To some extent, going down is much easier the faster you go.
* As you roll over the edge, relax your arms to absorb the shock, and shift your weight back with the saddle in front of your crotch (unless it is so steep that you must rub the back tire with your butt).
* Keep the front wheel turning and do not skid. Have some finesse with the brakes.
* Hold to a straight line at first.
* Think of yourself as a shock absorber. The better you do this, the smoother it will all go. Test your skill by choosing increasingly difficult stairs--then find a metal-grate staircase for graduation from Chopper's Stair School. Just don't call me if you get hurt.

Is this applicable for rigid bikes?
One tip: Just be careful when going down the steps where busy pedestrians are...

One tip: Just be careful when going down the steps where busy pedestrians are... or where there might be an owner type jeep with spiked bumpers coming perpendicular to the bottom of the stairs ;D

i've seen it in videos, and the rider looks like a jockey, absorbing the shock in the arms and legs.

one more things, faith! hehehe especially if you use a FS bike, that bike will roll down the stairs no problem. but of course when you're at the edge of the steps you start to have doubts, think that the bike will flip over, etc

i do go down on stairs with FS or Rigid (no suspension at all). and yeah since the angle is defined, the bike can handle it pretty well. i guess the only time i might fail is if i'm riding with smaller wheels

ridding stairs sideways lesens the "stepness" of your descent. See slalom skiers (or dunno the term they use) going down the slope. they usually criss cross the slope to be able to slow down the descent. Or course you have to have a wide staircase (likew AS building in UP) to be able to do this. Otherwise you have to do a sharp turn everytime you hit the ends.
Don you protective gear and have fun, man!

he he he, i'll try and do that, he he he first stair rolling that i've done is the one in CCP.. try that one -- then the one in Luineta (near the carabao statue)... fafa rocky tried riding that one too (first time.. and boy was he ever so proud of himself).. then the one in intramuros (where mad_doc'x cousin crashed).. then the one in rustan's ayala .. then UP stairs.. hehehe. yeah you should try it. and rob is right. always use your protective gears.

the scary part about going down a set of stairs is when you finish the 1st set and you're going to fast for the second. you sometimes feel like the bike's going to jump and gap the 2nd set. when you reach a plateau before the 2nd set of stairs, check your speed. if the plateau is long enough to ride off the speed, do so if you're not confident enough to ride the whole thing straight. in the event that you're going to fast and the bikes front end lifts, just push it down. keep your weight at the center slightly to the back, just as if you're riding down a receiver.
i almost went endo when i went down the affectionately called temple of doom in CCP. those were some mean stairs.

Your butt (arse) should be parallel to the stairs, so as to not do the infamous endo part...
keep your arms relaxed all the time and follow the movements, like the jackhammer ( as to what i've observed)...

first stair i did a few years back was the church in amari, on a rigid, he he he. i also did another in our market, but it's about 4 or 5 steps. i think i'm gonna get me shin guards when i try to do a sideways descent. i'm shaky when the front and rear wheel don't fall at the same time especially on steep stairs

me when doin stairs riding, first when your goin to go riding down lean backward but watch your butt with the rear tire, and just go on a straight line, but never ever use your breaks on front or you might ending up on the ground on your face...hehehe just use your rear breaks hope it helps

remember, the key is to balance your weight at the center of the bike. only go further back if it becomes really steep. otherwise, if you just always put your weight back your front may start to wander and you might lose control.
