the answer protapers came out locally in 2 versions. yes, one's cheaper than the other, but in most cases they are both authentic. i can't recall which lbs mentioned that the primary difference between both versions was the type of aluminum used (6061 vs 7075 - i hope i got those codes right). anyway, these bars are pretty bulletproof.

sir Peach, One more reason to DH for you...Canada's subsidized healthcare program. That s why that country produces some of the wilder riders eh? ;D I have a pair of Mavic 217 Ceramic rims ...will they fare as good as the Rhino lites or the Single Tracks ? Some guys at Cartimar offered some good money for it on the spot..Im thinking of using or selling it. It s mint so its as good as money Im down to my 217 Ceramic, the rhino Lites or the Single Tracks.....the fewer the choices the harder it is..HALP AC1? you're riding this truck? Now you would be needing binoculars just to see a glimpse of grnhrnt & the rest of the racing pack's %^#;D. Oh dont worry I'll be right there next you on the trails (heaving & fighting the fainting spells )

i still say go with the single tracks, yes there is a welded version of the rhyno but its almost double the cost and only as strong as a single track... the only reason to go rhyno is if you like the more macho look or if youre gonna run v brakes

This is good info. I was comparing both and notice that the more expensive one has a thinner aluminum. (and also lighter) The one on my trail bike (cheaper version) is already misaligned. It came with the bike that I bought 2nd hand. Anyone seen the old protapers? I think it only came out in 2 colors: gray titanium and gold finishes... If you see any of those in any LBS please let me know... Alpha, Get the singletracks. Its relatively light for XC but strong enough for DH. If you will be FR mostly, dont get anything longer than 50mm stem. Short stem helps alot in dh and dirt jumping. see you in the trails...

sir Peach, One more reason to DH for you...Canada's subsidized healthcare program. BS! no one wants to get hurt no matter how good your medical coverage is. would you jump off a cliff knowing you won't make it just coz u know you are covered financially to go to a hospital? i wouldn't. No one jumps off a drop knowing he will crash... that would be suicidal if u did. yes we are lucky to have a good medicare... even a search and rescue group to get u out of the mtn if u can't (broken bone heli-lifted if u need to) . There's a good turn out of exceptionally skilled bikers out here BECAUSE of the environment. vancouver is covered by mtns in the north... hence the NORTH shore. the mtns from the west.... to an hour (and much further) drive to the east pretty much have trails on them... hiking, horses, mtn bikers, camping. because of the amount of riders here, there are a lot of volunteer trail builders that works on them after their day job and on weekends. they are the ones that builds the stunts and maintains the trails so they get too beat up. we also have trail days where riders put some trail building hours on the trails. plus we have an association such as the nsmba that represents mtn bikers in the region, plus organizing the trail maintenace days. bike stores sponsors these days and do so by providing lunch or breakfast to these weekend builders. mtn biking is a culture down here... it's a way of life. if u go to the towns at the bottom of these local mtns u will see kids, young kids, the ones that gets babied w/ a yaya (or two) in the phils, riding bikes dropping off platforms 10" high. the same kids in the philippines would probably be playing w/ his nintendo or some indoor activity. u will see kids, less than 10/12 yrs old riding expensive full size (small frame yet still too big) mtn bikes riding the shore most of you guys will walk. dehins nagyayabang ha... it's the truth. that's the reason why BC's got some of the best rides out there. u want proof? watch the raceface UFC competition. these guys are kids.... not like us old guys (compared to them). they have been riding after school, working on the side (newspaper/mowing the lawns) to buy that new super-T or boxxer... hanging out on their LBS. i know pilipinos are proud people. i read once pa nga here that he believes that phils got the best trails.... no way! i'm probably staying here until fall... come over here. i'll show u some trails. riders from all over the world come here to ride. companies come to test their freeride/DH frames. specialized especially are often here "testing" their prototype frames... or showing off their soon to be release frames like the demo9, demo8, SX.... @ whistler, i dnt even have to say what this mtn resort represents for mtn bikers. i love mtn biking. i really do. it's one of the few things that makes me really happy. i will miss this place so bad. summer time: this is what we do. after 5pm i get off work, but if i head to work @ 8 instead of 9 then i get off at 4. i change to my gear and drive to the local mtns where my friends have done the same thing. we shuttle twice to get 2 runs before it starts getting dark at 8.30/9. on weekends, we either head to whistler to another mtn outside the greater vancouver area.. a little further out. myb an hour to 2 out. mybe a ferry ride. the weather is good, it's not to hot, it's not too humid. myb a road trip, myb a heli trip up to the peak of whistler... higher than the tree line.... that's the plan this august anyways. we don't have that in the phils bec most pinoy would rather play basketball than ride. riding is expensive... it really is. and for those that can afford them... they rather be on some air-conditioned club house... or playing golf. this "medicare" came out before.... i didn't say anything. so the second time, i just couldn't... gotta say something. hopefully i did not offend anyone. alphabolt, the BS is not meant towards u personally... just for the statement. dnt wanna start offending my future riding buddies. i'll do that when iget there. ha3 kidding! peace.

nice insightful piece you wrote there. your candor always crack me up. btw yer stayin' in RP for good when you come home? it's funny but two friends of mine are flying off to canada soon to work and plan to stay there for a long time. they got fed up here i think and are seeking to find the proverbial greener pastures there

Additional info on the singletrack: it's not meant DAW for heavier riders, meaning 180 lbs and above. alphabolt i don't think you're a clydesdale dude (we met in ross yata remember?) so i think you're gonna be fine. im using the singletrack and IMO it's an ideal AXC/light free ride/moderate DH type of rim. if you're racing and you're a heavy guy who jumps and drops a lot then i wouldn't bet on it. I love my singletrack so far. my type of riding is close to your description of yer own riding style. Finally: Singletrack - Welded, triple-hollow construction with nickel-plated brass eyelets.540-590 grams. size-wise i think it's the link between double wide type DH rims and smallish XC rims Go for it (dami na naka single track ngayon. kala ko dati konti lang kami)

P1500 and above. u can save somewhere else.

My body s kinda odd shaped (sino dehins ) ..torso s almost a medium but the legs forgot to drink milk or sumthin...short. Im about 5'6 1/2" honest height heheh Do I : get a seatpost with setback (Prodigy, etc) or get a longer stem(now its 70mm)? Much obliged, folks!

I built a hardtail rig out of spares and through a helpful friend. Made it light as possible...panghabol ko sa mga masters of the south! ;D Might post it at the BIke Gall soon + the AC1 Yes, mga kapatid, it hurts to be behind the pack...I literally felt like a "drop out" pun intended Well its a challenge for an old guy like me who s new to the Biking lifestyle yeabo

I ll have to check tom and will post. I trust the dude who sold it to me though so no worries on that dept. I wont do heavy stuff of dH or FR. Just mild but fast rolls with mid-high jumps. Lookin at the bike, it s a mean & tough machine. Swingarm flexing is a bummer. HOpefully a one off event. Sorry you had it

Much obliged, folks! if you want your bike to seem longer by getting a post with setback or a longer stem, better get post with the setback, youll still need the short stem when doing mild dh, in which case you wont be on your saddle(long stem while off saddle on dh is bad)

i have an AC 1 with a swinger coil 4 way rear shock. fork is a sherman firefly. avid mechs and Shimano Hone crankset. I think it's more than enough for a moderate downhill rig. If you have a ZI, use the ZI instead of the DJ. Boxxers are great but i don't think they're great for an AC. It would be a tad more difficult when climbing up the trail.
