Best thing you can do to strengthen your lungs is aerobic exercise... ride, run, swim, anything that elevates your respiration for extended periods. Like anything else, you can overdo it: the key is to be consistent and gradually increase.
Quitting smoking is a good move, though there may be an adjustment period.
Of course a good diet helps but I really think the herbs/vitamins/supplements/medicines thing is largely hype. Eat well and keep riding!

dayuhan has it made. i'll add something coming from personal experience. i used to smoke occassionally until i got sick twice in a month mainly caused by smoking, pulmonary in nature. i stopped last year, february. up to now, i still breath heavily. im do only guy in a group of bikers you'll hear gasping for air as if its my last or as if i sound like a horse. that has always been the case specially tackling steep ascents or plainly abrupt, awkward ascents where power is needed. thing is, although i still breathe heavily, my capacity to use oxygen has greatly improved. meaning im a better biker than i was before. just keep pedaling and quit smoking for good. even if you breathe heavily, you'll find out one of these days that you've improved: endurance and skill wise. 2 cents from me brad. hope you find it useful.

dont be alarmed... your system is already cleaning itself... toxins like from smoking are causing those... because the body is once used to process them by now it's like an abnoramality in your body... worry free...I used to smoke and stop...smoke and stop....blah blah blah... it's just a common thing... but if it still occur in a matter that you think its been too much...visit your doctor... by the way...one of those things that help me is a once or twice a week dip in the pool... it helps me a lot and of course fruit juices for your toxins to be easily flushed out.

i started smoking when i was 12 years old and quit last 2001 (average consumption: 1 1/2 packs a day) after almost 34 years into the habit. had my lung x-rayed and diagnosed with minimal ptb (doc says i'm still lucky, because others ended up with worse condition like emphysema), underwent the 6 months standard treatment period and during that time got myself busy with jogging, etc. took up biking last year (april) and as jon experiences, i also breathe heavily during the long uphills (must've been the long period of smoking taking it's toll on my lungs and possibly age na rin) lately, through a tip from my co-SCUD rider, uphiller and tip from another friend (this is his secret on why he's so strong), i tried this ascof forte, lagundi thing and it seems to be doing wonders to my battered lungs. i plan to undergo a regular ascof forte therapy* and see it's long term effect. it's a good thing my osteoarthiritis has stopped bothering me, i was afraid that i'll end up either walking or biking backwards after undergoing an ARTHRO therapy * no therapeutic claim - borrowed from doc jaysons avatar

what this fuss about lagundi, huh? hahahahahaha
i smoked at 15 stopped at 21...and oohhhh that feels good. i consumed 2 packs daily and even more if exams were coming in (I'm good at hiding to date my mom was clueless that I ever smoked).
back to Lagundi for da Malandi, I learned was a muscle relaxant. Used it once only...boy, you wont believe what it did for me. Still, nothing beats aerobic exercise for those lung busting challenges.
Gum for your cigarette substitue. In my case, it was those butter ball candies (now I'm borderline to being a diabetic...hehehehe)

another thing... the sad part even though you quit smoking is when a part of our lung is destroyed or affected by any agent like smoke, tar, etc... we can no longer recover it or like a brain cell which have died...it is gone forever... that is why the thing that we must promote is "Do not start to smoke" thingy and not the "Stop smoking" already late thingy...

oceanrider has a point. u can swin to increase your lung power! also since you quit smoking you have to expect an adjustment phase, like dayuhan said! my best advice is to keep on riding (not too hard, mind you, you're still in "withdrawal", so to speak). couple this with a bit of swimming to build your lung power. oh, jogging also helps too! hopefully you'll develop the power u need in no time!
p.s. welcome to the world of neverending upgrades! (biking! hahaha) cheers!!! ride safe!!!

"Whenever there is change - there's resistance." ...but if change is for the better - love the feeling of resistance.
Just keep doing the right thing and no turning back. Prayer also helps, yes indeed! A lot!

Running is good to increase your lung power. I had a first taste of cigarette and alcohol at 12 and became a regular smoker at 14 and a regular drinker at 17. I was almost put into a rehab for being alcoholic at 24. I had tried and failed quiting the habit for at least 6 times ranging from 3 weeks to 14months, yet it always finds its way back on me. I am now an occasional drinker ,just a bottle or 2 will do (now its beer not gin ;D ;D) and I have stopped smoking again recently, I'll be 1 year smoke free come 15 Dec 2007 hmmm hopefully it will be permanet this time around. Good thing that my riding buddies today are all non-smoker not unlike my previous buddies where almost all of us are smokers!. As a smoker, my favorite exercise is always been running but running a 3k distance seems forever much more 10k, it feels like my lung is going to burst. As a non-smoker 10k distance is a breeze. Running regularly and vitamin C intake gives my lung enough power for a day ride. I still spit black phlegm once in a while!

Can swimming really make your lungs stronger? I cant even count how many times I've had cough , colds , sore throat from swimming
