Guys,
Is it advisable to only use energy drinks during exercise? how about in long rides and races?
are energy drinks/thirst quenchers enough or there is still the need of water?

if your ride is going to be for more than hour, it is advisable to use sports drinks.
if you're on a budget, buy the powdered sunbolt. 50 pesos for a box of six. way cheaper than gatorade.

buko juice pwede na! hehehe pero yeah you have to take into account what you want to replenish . . . in terms of energy for long rides, i would think solid food is still the best like banana. personally, when hunger pang strikes me, my energy just drops drastically. must be the body's way to conserve energy since it feels it is being starved. you'd also want to replenish your body salts. boy bawang? hehehe o kaya hydration salts may help as well, mga 15 pesos lang ata per pack. i'm sure there are a lot of articles out there on proper nutrition when riding. most importantly, you have to know how your body metabolism reacts. like me I cannot eat anything heavy 3 hours before a ride or i'll puke. pero during a ride i can eat tons of bulalo and feel hungry again 15 mins after.

No, energy drinks like red bull and extra joss are the worst thing you can drink on an extended ride. Yeah, it'll give you some quick energy but when the effect wears off, you'll crash faster than the boost it gave.

berocca is the best...as long as it's given to you by the berocca girls. ask paul, he kept on hanging out at the berocca tent in bataan. he got 1st place.

Gatorade is the best for extended ride. Coke for short burst or just after the ride.

for recovery (post ride), the best thing is a drink with protein in it like Power Bar Recovery mix. you'll also need a protein drink on a long ride or race as well. although what i really like for recovery though is something like a cheeseburger hehe. or halo halo.

oh. ok. thanks guys. i bought Akitvade, grape flavour (mountain bike yung picture e hehe). uy! that s my fave drink..same flavor...wont upset your stomach even when empty...unlike some other drinks i've tried...the only problem with it i guess is the big heavy and breakable glass bottle. when not available its gatorade for me.

Gatorade so far seems works for me, after ride or for short breaks. Will never try Extra Joss again for my pre-ride drink...wreaks havoc in my stomach and heartburn as well, same with PowerBar . I use a 2-liter hydration pack, just filled it with 1-liter water... and just add more for long rides when I pass by a store. Dunno what happen, when I used to climb. Extra Joss + pomelo juice goes in my water bottle, water for the hydration pack, Gin in my Nalgene...I have no problem at all Another drink that causes me severe heartburn....Tropicana

on long/exhausting rides, drinking lots and lots and lots of water won't do. it will dilute your body fluids too much, leading to the hyponatre-something condition. you need sports drinks for the sodium replenishment.

For me gatorade is the best. Diluted tom 60-75% otherwise its too sweet. replacement of sodium & potassium are the most important minerals to keep you going for long durtation rides.

Did you actually experience this? Kasi we do century rides where we try to kill ourselves tryng to keep up w/ roadie racers drinking nothing but water As long as I drink before getting thirsty , no prob whatsoever Syemps , may lomi/mami/pancit and coke break at the halfway mark And I'm not even a very fit rider

seems to be two different types of drinks being discussed. using my own definitions... energy drink: used for short burst of energy to help one finish a race/ride/hill. usually caffeine or other stimulant combined with sugar gives this added "energy" boost. personally, I don't like to use these types of drinks because too much sugar upsets my stomach. for endurance rides, when I come down from the caffeine/sugar "high" my energy becomes lower than normal. hydration drinks: used to replenish liquids lost to sweat. water is the most common and works fine for me during short rides (3 hours or less). any ride 4-5 hours is considered a semi-endurance ride for me and I seem to lose a lot of electrolytes (mostly sodium & postassium with some calcium & magnesium) while sweating. I have to replace those electrolytes. drinks like gatorade/cytomax/E3 work for me. For endurance rides longer than 6 hours I need concentrated electrolytes and take capsules every hour containing the above mentioned minerals to replace what my body sweats out. fattire mentioned cramping... without replacing electrolytes everyone will cramp eventually. we're all different... know your body and what works for you. don't forget to eat solid food for fuel. check the nutrition of your favorite drink to see how much sodium and potassium it contains. here's product information on gatorade endurance drink. click product information, then formula/nutrition ... www.itsonthecourse.com/sodium: 200mg per 8 oz potassium: 90mg per 8oz calcium & magnesium: trace amounts E3 info: www.performancenutritionals.com/store/Shop_By_Category___New_ProductsFRSTE3?Args=&tab_name=nutritional_informationI use E-caps for ultra-endurance events: www.e-caps.com/za/ECP?PAGE=PRODUCT&CAT=ELECT&PROD.ID=4037&OMI=10104,10082,10047&AMI=10104

when do you drink hydration drinks? i tried one kanina, during my training, lalo akong nauhaw (i got more thirsty). then at home i finished the ice cold bottle of the Aktivade, i didn't feel any effect. hehe

i like drinking aktivade too - specially the green one; lime flavor.
but the drink that really worked for me during the last long ride that i had (tamagochi falls) was an ice cold Sunbolt mixture.. i was really exhausted and it got really hot. i was pedalling without knowing na "may sabit" ang breaks ko -- noticed it na lang sa downhill portion.. i was slooowly rolling without pressing my break levers..
good thing gbb offered a sunbolt sachet in one of our stops..
try it. worked for me.

i've read somewhere in either PCN or MTB addict where you can make your own energy drink!!!!!
i think the mixture is as follows:
1L water 2 tablespoon of sugar 1 teaspoon of salt and to top it all squeeze in some calamasi or lime!!!!!
i hope i got it right!!!!!

on a normal no training day we eat what we eat..the normal food..if its balance then we will get all the nutrients we need to for the day... but we dont sweat that much and use up much energy resources on an ordinary day as compared to wholeday ride...hydration/sports drinks are there to supplement our nutrients intake...plain water i believe is still the best if you think you are getting all the nutrients you need from the food you eat during rides...if not then i think thats when the sports drinks should come in..usually naman sa trail walang pagkaing matino atleast when we ride...minsan lunch mo 3pm na. i dont expect to feel like superman after drinking gatorade.. thats bs hehehe! im already feeling good when i'm riding. just my opinion.

hey bo, i once joined an explo(major) ride just some weeks ago where i cramped noon til dark, and then the next week i rode with the same PinoyMTBiker guys for another explo but this time around i took berocca 3 days before the ride because i remembered you told me you were taking the capsule you mentioned same way, once daily, 3 days before the ride. worked for me! bye be cramps! janix, i'm no training expert but on rides, it's water first for me and when the sugar's about gone - sunbolt! you'll figure it out sooner or later, like wcoastbo said, "know your body and what works for you" i know ritchie-julio drinks gatorade a few days before downhill races hope this helps!
