I remember the commerical ba yun about EQ? where kids were told if they hold off eating the marshmallow they would get another one when the facilitator came back? Those that held off had a much higher EQ (Emotional Quotient) . . .
I've felt how much mental toughness plays a factor on very long rides in very remote places, where hiring a jeep is not an option and there are no stores to provide supplies. Parang you just want it to end like a bad dream.
Kaya ako pag nagkaanak, bahala na ano sabihini ni kumander. pahirapan ko anak ko kaagad sa trails basta kaya na pumadyak! mwahahahaha EQ dev't sabihin ko

Did elite athletes have a rough childhood? Probably.... but might have tendencies to hate/dislike their parents. Americans parents "forces" their kids out of the house when they turn 18. Then, they in turn are "forced-in" in a home-for-the-aged once they are the one in need of taking-care of.

Parang you just want it to end like a bad dream. for this one, you might wanna try outdoor backpacking (or for most here in the philippines would say mountaineering, but it ain't) or even take it to the extreme, outdoor adventure racing (dehins yung urban ha). being lost in the wilderness at 2am without no food and sleep and then finding the way back home builds up mental toughness. i'm not saying you try to get lost. you will be lost and you'll never know and when that time comes, you will muster all of what you've learned and prevail.

I think getting your kids in sports will be enough training for mental toughness, wag nyo na pahirapan hehe wag lang sobrang stage father
One of the toughest guys I know dehins naman naghirap nung bata His parents were rich , yun nga lang puro siga yata nasa paligid nya growing up He's totally fearless , sobra tapang always involved sa gulo He's also one our nations top athletes ( or used to be ) In his first and only adventure race , I was told about his team in their rush to a first place finish He was already limping, his male team mate had severe cramps and his female team mate dehins na makalakad ( all were not AR'ers ) Binuhat nya pareho and ran to the finish line! Astig! ( and pagdating sa finish, binagsak daw yung team mates hehe ) dehins na physical strength yun , mental toughness na Maganda siyang case study

Or was Atilla the Hun in his past life. Seriously, I agree that you don't need to have a rough and tough childhood to have mental toughness. Kids today already have a hardtime being kids. Let them feel and know that they are special. Mental toughness can be supplemented by a persons "heart and soul."

Parang you just want it to end like a bad dream. Mental toughness? i think this can be achieved through 'conditioning'. Like what Marcs was pointing out, training provides us the capacity to endure and finaly achieve a goal. It just gets harder when you are in unfamilliar teritory eg. New trail. wherein you do not know where the technical sections are, the steepest climbs come out of each bend (sounds familiar? hehe) etc. etc. Then again, having "hatred" or any negative emotion to fuel the energy is sometimes a good thing.

Did elite athletes have a rough childhood? I'm agree with this... they are more discipline and successful people had hard life when they were a kid and they don't want to go back to that experience. To many example I know . Just my 2 cents.
