Does riding your bike along the polluted streets of Metro Manila contribute to making your throat sore? Sore throat is really no fun, it's painful everytime you swallow. And it's most painful when you wake up in the morning and only gets better after I drink a hot cup of coffee. I didn't really find the connection between sore throat and bike riding but mcvarki pointed out that he rides his bike (motorcycle) to work almost everyday and his throat is always sore. Do you think masks would help?

mrsmcvarki, try finding an elevated location anywhere in MM and look out at the city...you'll see a grayish cloud over the city. that's the air we breathe everyday read a couple of days ago that MM is in the top 5 most polluted cities IN THE WORLD no surprise then why your throat would itch. kaya pag nag bike ako from home to maarat and back, naka mask ako.

Small particles of dust and whatever tend to get into your throat during bike rides... that's what irritates the throat and other air passages.
I think mask would help... except for the ones we use in the hospital, I know there are alot more kind out in the market(not familiar w/ them ;D). Get the ones with good filters and does not restrict your breathing.
Try also to check for the design... some mask may cause CO2 buildup in the camber itself during exhalation which you may eventually rebreathe.
Hope this helps.

Yan problema ko parati , had rheumatic heart nung bata Nasira tuloy ang singing career ko Masks would definitely help, pero mas maganda siguro mag tsikot nalang kayo when in the city Coffee dries the throat, mas maganda hot tea na may calamansi ( sabi nung friend kong mang-aawit ) If you can take the taste, extra strength fisherman's friend is soothing if your throat feels raw Kung wala yung above, coke na dehins malamig. Soothing din

Masks would definitely help, pero mas maganda siguro mag tsikot nalang kayo when in the city Minsan kasi mas masarap lang talaga mag bike kesa mag-tsikot First, you save gas(no kidding ang laki ng savings ko if I bike twice a week instead of taking the car), then you don't have to worry about parking, then you get a very good work-out/exercise Anyway, thanks for the tips guys Will start looking for a good mask. Ted, is the setlaz brand ok? Or would you recommend the respro even if it's more expensive? Whatcha think?

Ted, is the setlaz brand ok? Or would you recommend the respro even if it's more expensive? Whatcha think? The Setlaz is not bad! Haven't tried that other brand so can't really compare. But i find myself digging out the Setlaz whenever i have a long ride through MM's streets....so they must be ok. Otherwise i'd let them rot in the closet ;D Just clean them after every ride with soap and warm water...tapos every 6 months pour boiling water on the filter to "refresh" the carbon filter. for motorcycle use, if it was possible to use an airconditioned helmet, that would be cool

About cars use in MM, be sure aircon filter is replace more often. If not, the pollutant it filter will find its way inside the car. Wish the Philippines will follow what some city in Italy does where no private cars are allowed one day on weekend except public transportation. Diesel fumes causes a lot of breathing problems. In America, they are trying to ban or tighten regulation on diesel powered vehicle because of problem to health.
