Had my blood checked recently (had to check my uric acid level). I also noticed my hemoglobin level is in the low normal level.
Ang pag-ka-understand ko, hemoglobin is the component in the blood that carries oxygen (aside from other important things it does). So is it safe to conclude that high hemoglobin levels means high oxygen content in the body and therefore better cardio-vascular performance.
With that in mind how do I increase my hemoglobin levels? Ano ang dapat i-include sa diet to help or vitamins to take?
Please feel free to give comments and suggestion. Beneficial ito for everyone.

brad, can't answer your question...but as a layman, hemoglobin is only a conduit, and assuming their levels are normal, oxygen being delivered to your tissues would more likely be a function of your heart and veins...docs, pls correct me if i'm wrong.
but Tong, my question is, have you checked what kind of hemoglobin deficiency you might have? or the reason for it?

Haemoglobin
An iron protein- compound in red blood cells that gives blood its red colour and transports oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitric oxide. It carries oxygen to body cells. After releasing oxygen to the body tissues, haemoglobin picks up carbon dioxide and transports it to the lungs, where it is exhaled. Haemoglobin also gathers and releases nitric oxide, which plays an important role in regulating blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessel walls. Haemoglobin controls the expansion and contraction of blood vessels by regulating the amount of nitric oxide in the vessels. Haemoglobin is contained entirely in the red blood cells. To combine properly with oxygen, red blood cells must contain adequate haemoglobin. Iron is needed for the formation of haemoglobin. A lack of haemoglobin caused by iron deficiency leads to anaemia.

ok warlock pretty much nailed it on the head ;D there are a lot of reasons why we could get a low hemoglobin count (chronic or acute bleeding dahil sa mga sugat, galing sa operation, ulcers and such, intestinal parasites, pregnancy, and unfortunately as mentioned iron deficiency anemia) now unless your hemoglobin count falls real low you won't notice it much. an easy check would be to look at the palms of your hands (it should be pinkish not white) the nailbeds (pink pa rin) and yung iyong lower eyelids (ano ba tagalog nito) it should also be pinkish with blood vessels visible. people could also have artificially raised high hgb counts. try living in baguio for a few weeks, mapapansin mo na sa una hinihingal ka but you get acclimated to it kaya ang iyong mga pisngi becomes rosy. he he mas halata to sa mga tisoy at tisay ;D in everything... lahat ng sobra ay masama.... too low, you could faint from climbing up a flight of stairs... much less ride a bike. too high unless your body really needs it can cause your blood to hemoconcentrate and become hypercoagulable... madali kang ma stroke nyan, so the middle levels are always best (14 -17 for men and 12-16 for women) iron deficiency anemia is the most easily corrected of these causes. mapapansin mo ang mga buntis ay pinapainom ng mga iron supplements (Ferrous Sulfate) but this is not really advisable for people with a healthy appetite kasi you could easily overdose on iron also. so just include dark, green, leafy vegetables. talbos ng kamote, malunggay, spaghetti, bread (whole wheat), spinach, beef, shrimp, liver and eggs have adequate iron. not to mention ang luto na dinuguan ng iyong nanay. remember you need only 10 mg of iron a day... for those below 50 ha... kung 50 above.... di bale na lang ;D sir gullivers question is very important... you can treat the symptom but if the cause is still present... babalik pa rin ang deficiency. so find out what the cause is first

while taking a routine blood test several years ago my count came in on the low side, 13. I went through several tests to make sure there was no internal bleeding or colon polyps or ulcers or....
nothing wrong that the doctors could find and I still bike as hard as I did then. i'm never going to be a strong climber, but I won't be last to the top of the hill. i'm not fast, but it won't stop me from riding. my genes have decided to give me a low hemo count, but i'm sure a better diet would help.

Thanks all for the feedbacks.
My hemoglobin count is within normal level. Kaso nga lang it is in the low normal level. According to the lab normal levels are within 140-180g/L and mine is 144. Okay naman ang aking color, dehins naman nawawala ang aking pagka-pink kahit kulay araw na ang binti at braso.
I don't plan to be a elite level rider, pero like most of us, gusto mo to always beat yourself. Try to get to the next higher step kaya looking for ways to improve my body (and my riding).
Thanxs a lot.
