guilty as charged, it really is a nasty habit that i go back to after some months of stopping, then i'd stop again then back again, stupid really! coz m fully aware of the hazards it poses, dats y ilang rounds inside d village and m gasping for air like a sick dog. i read somwer dat some countries label their cigarettes with "smoking kills" instead of "is hazardous to ur health" maybe they should target men's vanity like "smoking causes impotence" or "smoking shrivels ur d..ik" or something like that. anyways, kudos to the bros, who has kicked the habit for good.

In Singapore, cigarettte packs have very graphic images (lungs with cancer, babies infected with cancer, lips with cancer etc). The sales person actually even tried to convince my friend not to buy (are you sure you want this?) ;D guilty as charged, it really is a nasty habit that i go back to after some months of stopping, then i'd stop again then back again, stupid really! coz m fully aware of the hazards it poses, dats y ilang rounds inside d village and m gasping for air like a sick dog. i read somwer dat some countries label their cigarettes with "smoking kills" instead of "is hazardous to ur health" maybe they should target men's vanity like "smoking causes impotence" or "smoking shrivels ur d..ik" or something like that. anyways, kudos to the bros, who has kicked the habit for good.

news.yahoo.com/s/hsn/20050818/hl_hsn/onscreenevilneedsacigaretteOnscreen, Evil Needs a Cigarette THURSDAY, Aug. 18 (HealthDay News) -- Sharon Stone did it with killer cool in Basic Instinct. So did Al Pacino, playing no less than Satan in The Devil's Advocate. In both cases, these actors lit up the screen while lighting up on screen. And according to a new study, the type of evil roles they played represent the bulk of nicotine-addicted characters in American movies today. In a sampling of 447 popular movies from the 1990s, researchers found that more than a third of these dastardly "antagonists" smoked. Poorer, more "unglamorous" characters were also more likely to light up -- raising the question of whether tobacco use is now linked to "badness" and/or poverty on screen. In addition, the researchers also found that fewer than a quarter of all movie characters smoked, a percentage that's equal to rates of smoking in the United States as a whole. The finding conflicts with previous research that showed smoking omnipresent in movies -- a factor some health activists believe helps drive young people to take up the habit. And the finding that it's evil-doers who most often light up may run counter to the perception "that Hollywood is trying to get people to smoke," said study co-researcher Dr. Karan Omidvari, a pulmonologist at St. Michael's Medical Center in Newark, N.J. On the other hand, Omidvari said, there's still too much smoking in movies, with much of it completely unnecessary. Omidvari, a film buff, said he helped launch the study because he was skeptical about previous studies of smoking in the movies. He said they made little distinction regarding the context of tobacco use seen on screen. Researchers examined 600 characters -- 300 women and 300 men -- in movies that placed in the Top 10 during weekly box-office reports in the 1990s. Some of the most well-known films include Jerry Maguire, There's Something About Mary, and As Good as It Gets. Several types of movies -- including those that were animated or didn't portray contemporary time periods, such as Titanic -- were excluded. The study findings appear in the August 2005 issue of the journal Chest. The researchers found that there was more smoking among male characters than female characters (roughly 26 percent versus 21 percent), among antagonists than protagonists (36 percent versus nearly 21 percent), and among poor people than rich people (48 percent versus close to 11 percent). Independent film studios, which tend to make edgier movies, were more likely to include smoking, a sign that big Hollywood studios are actually "more responsible" than the smaller producers, Omidvari said. And what of those cigarette-happy villains? Common sense would suggest that these characters -- like the noxious "Cigarette-Smoking Man" in the 1998 movie version of The X-Files -- are less likely to make teens want to light up. On the other hand, Omidvari said, "it might be cool to be bad." Another specialist on smoking in the movies disagreed with the new study's conclusions regarding previous research into the issue but did agree that villains can be role models of a sort. "You can't generalize that all bad characters give anti-tobacco messages," said Kori Titus, spokeswoman for American Lung Association's Sacramento chapter and Thumbs Up! Thumbs Down!, an ongoing project ranking movies by how they depict smoking. However, Titus believes the New Jersey researchers are wrong to suggest that levels of smoking in U.S. movies are less harmful because they reflect levels in the American population as a whole. "I would argue that the impact of movies on kids' decisions is so much greater," she said. "If you see a total stranger walking down the street smoking a cigarette, that's not going to have the same impact as seeing your favorite movie star larger than life, looking gorgeous."

Hi Whoopi,
That's a very indept comment on smoking. Why is smoking or lighting a cig is banned by the Adboard (a governing body that regulates incoming advertisements). While drinking beer is allowed if the actor/ actress agrees to the terms. Have you seen a smoker go amuk? 75% of violent crimes commited here in our country includes drug and alcohol abuse. hmmm. just food for thought.
Do you smoke? I do.

Hi Whoopi, That's a very indept comment on smoking. I do. I think Rob has a good point... Why is it that there are thighter rules on Cig adverts vs. Alcohol? Just recently, Team Ferrari lost its sponsorship from Marlboro due to a ban on such products in F1 racing and (was or will later be) replaced with JOHNNY WALKER! My thinking is this... Both cigarettes and alcohol infuse much needed revenues to goverment funds in terms of tax (ideally, of course) but both cig and alcohol contribute to poor health which will have an impact on the goverment spending more money for health care for specific groups who suffer diseases or complications due to cig and alcohol "abuse". This process tends to be a vicious cycle! Unless of course that prices for these commodities rockets sky high(due to Tax) that it is restricted to only those who can afford the extra cash from their pockets. This would be a ridiculous thought and for many it is degrading (esp. if you're poor) that you can't afford to buy a stick of cigge because the gov. worries about your heart and lungs or maybe that your school allowance just won't allow it and that you can drink alcohol without actually getting drunk because its too darn expensive to be so and you'd rather let your car do the guzzling just to get home(sober!). Having coffee with out a cigge(its the apocalyps!). But between a cigge and alcohol, I'd rather have a bottle of beer every now and then. Its much better than having to suffer the effects of smoking besides, with the pollution in Manila... who needs it. just my two cents.

mas sure and swift yata kasi ang death from smoking than alcohol abuse. in fact, there's the key. only if you ABUSE the use of alcohol does it become lethal. tsaka na rin siguro because of the history of law suits versus tobacco manufacturers, naging medyo unpopular sila. (though it's a lot of bull really, why blame the cigarette manufacturers if you get lung cancer because you choose to smoke?). pero wala pa yatang nasu-sue na alcohol companies because somebody died from drinking? smoking is bad bad bad. *puff puff puff*

Smoking is tantamount to herbal tea and majuna. so I heard from pareng bob who lives in jamaica. Nice dude... Always praying. in fact he is very religious. however being a rasta religion/ believer smoking majuna is part of thier praying ritual. a rasta believes that smoking brings you to a higher plain that facilitates "exteme bliss" -nirvana and allows you to commune with the rasta god and leave all your worries behind - hakuna matata. in fact he was caught by local lespu authorities and he converted all lespu authorities to rasta people and convinced local government that majuna is herb. check it out eman this is a fact!
"RED RED WIIINNNEE u make me feel so finnnnnnnnnnneeee! cheers" ; )

i was a heavy smoker before. i smoke more than a pack a day for 8 years, the regular pack ha, the 20's.. dehins pa kasi uso yang mga ten's nuon! but its been more than five years since i quited.. not a single stick! one day i just decided to quit.. it was suppose to be my new year's resolution but i quited on the 3rd day of january. wag kayong maniwala sa mga new years new years resolution na yan, the only right time to quit is "NOW". at dapat zero talaga pra matawid mo yung nicotine craving. i beleive you cannot quit sa "dahan dahan" na paraan, you will be just teasing your body and the "need" for nicotine will never go away. anyway, the hardest part for me was resisting the temptation of my smoking friends and family.. they are always offering me a cigarete and say "kunwari ka pa, sige na", as if breaking my will. and its true, at start you will feel the terrible craving. magkukunwari kang ayaw mo.. shet! it was really a struggle! for several months its been like that until they are convinced that i am really serious about quiting.. it took me half a year bago nawala yung craving tapos tuloy tuloy na. now, they are telling me never to smoke again, i think i have given them hope that they too can stop. sa ngayon isa pa lang ang tumigil sa kanila after me.. atleast. he is also a biker, biking really helps too.. the more you bike the more you become health conscious. diba? to quit smoking mindset and will power lang talaga ang kailangan! to good health! yun lang po!
