According to a copy of "The Common Sense Medical Guide and Outdoor Reference"... QUOTE Heat cramps or muscle cramps are spasmodic, painful contractions of the muscles which may last up to 15 minutes or longer. A person who is most likely to experience these cramps is someone in good physical condition who has overexerted during hot, humid conditions. The tightening or cramping condition of the muscle is usually due to a salt and/or fluid loss or imbalance which needs to be corrected.... ...Treatment: Remove the victim to a shady location or cool room and give a salty liquid (1/4 tsp of salt to a quart of water, lemonade, Gatorade thirst quencher, etc.). Rest and inactivity are important. Gently stretch the.... muscles...to relieve the pain.... Do not massage the muscles or give salt tablets.UNQUOTE hehehe, this excerpt implies i'm in good shape but tells me massage is bad, and that salty liquids are good...doesn't go to many specifics but it does give me a clue as to what i'm doing wrong. wonder why it doesn't talk about muscle cramps experienced while biking in the cold wind? anyone know anything about this???

That's a good point .. they only mentioned solution how to avoid cramping. One article I found to avoid cramping. Leg cramps - Dehydration, usually accompanied by electrolyte imbalance. Drink more water the day and night before a ride, hydrate with energy drinks during a ride. If cramping regularly, try a daily calcium/magnesium supplement.
Actually its been 4 years my last leg cramp. This happen in winter time when just wearing regular shorts without warmer. I think if you contantly exercising your legs, eat fruits and drink liguid (not san miguel ;D ;D) you can avoid this problem.

jr.
that's advice i can use, thanks! the hydration method seems to have worked very well for me during the last long ride but have never thought about the calcium magnesium levels in my food. ;D
another interesting thing i noted last ride...using platform pedals allowed me to shift my foot position every now and then, and at one point when i felt a cramp coming on, all i did was to transfer the load on a different part of my foot...voila, no more cramps! ;D

Don't ride when you have your monthly..... Biro lang Poe. Exercise always helps and stretching before rides. Someone has told me before that eating banana before ride helps against cramps. Worth a try and it's good for the body.

weekendrider, long time no hear brad! glad you decided to visit again. how your knees coming along? re your input on bananas, i learned that they are prized highly for their potassium content.... "Potassium is necessary for water balance and is found inside of every cell in your body. The potassium inside the cells balances the sodium outside the cells to maintain pressure and water balance in the body. Otherwise, if either the potassium or the sodium is high or either low or one high and the other one low, a pooling of water or dehydration can occur." (taken from: Ask the Dietitian SM Copyright © 1995-2003 Joanne Larsen MS RD LD) ...dehydration leads to cramps, so your friend is probably right ;D

tama ka dyan brad stretching helps...cause it conditions the muscles before an activity begins...remember the song..."mag-exercise tayo tuwing umaga" remember that in mind and eating fruits is a plus especially the banana which are rich in potassium(tama ba spelling ko) kasi this mineral is a muscle builder. Also the other tips above, hydration, vitamins, calcium intakes it would really help avoid cramps to happen.

Here's another statement I've also read about banana:
Potassium is an electrolyte that is essential for the body's normal growth and maintenance. It is necessary in order for the body to keep a normal water balance between the cells and body fluids and also plays an essential role in the response of nerves to stimulation and in the contraction of muscles. As a result of these important functions, potassium has received widespread attention from bodybuilders and runners trying to prevent or reduce the incidence of muscle cramps. Ask any athlete what to do for cramps and you will undoubtedly hear: "have a banana every day."

share your secrets! these things are a real pain when they happen kasi. what do you do when they happen and how can you avoid them in the first place ;D I had cramps last sunday, what I did (based from what ive learned before) wast to squeeze the origin/insertion of the muscle to prevent lactic acid to spread, so ung cramps ko was on the right hamsting so i squeezed my hamstring sa bandang knee (dun nga yata bada s patela ung insertion) tapos in a few minutes nawala na ung cramps. Hmmm labo ba? hehe I dunno pero it works for me, i learned it from my coach before pag nagkaka cramps ako sa soleus ko sstretch nya ung calves ko while pressing the origin of the muscle. Luckily, i was able to reach the destination yesterday without stopping.

Here's my take on cramping while biking. Each individual is different... some cramp easily, others don't. Know your body's limits. I know that I will cramp after 4-5 hours of hard riding. My ride dictates my meal/suppliment consumption during the activity. If my ride is going to be 3 hours or less, then water will be enough to keep me hydrated. If the ride is longer or the temperatures hot, then a bottle of Cytomax/Accelerade to suppliment the water. Liquid electrolyte replacement will give me an extra hour or so before my legs start to cramp. If my ride is going to be longer than 5 hours, then I need to constantly replace the electrolyte lost when I sweat (when I ride my camelbak straps, helmet straps, shorts & jersey, even my skin will turn white from the salts that come from my sweat). I now use a product that tri-athletes use. It's called "Endurolytes" and consists of potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium and a small amount of manganese. During endurance rides I take anywhere from 2-5 capsules per hour. I was able to ride 16 hours including food and rest stops. Until I find a better product I'm sold on them... www.e-caps.com/za/ECP?PAGE=PRODUCT&PROD.ID=4037&OMI=10082,10047&AMI=10082#info3 Of course resting and eating during long rides also helps my legs recover from electrolyte loss. This is just for cramps... I also eat food for energy.
