are bar ends really helpful on hill climbs? i use it to change my position on the handle bar to relax, specially on long stretches of flat trails. But on climbs, will it help me improve my climbing skills? and how?

it acts like the brake hoods on a roadie. Bar ends are especially useful when sprinting or climbing up off the saddle... Oh yeah, also great for hooking your handlebars around trees in tight singletrack...hehe

Oh yeah, also great for hooking your handlebars around trees in tight singletrack...hehe ;D ;D ;D ;D..true..happens to me many times when I had bar ends. One time I almost end up endo. Now, I'm no longer use them just add extra 10 mm of my stem length. Back to the topic. It help during climbing. It will change your geometry position, more lean forward and help during stand pedaling.

gives you more 'pull' on your cockpit than just the horizontal bar... great for climbing & sprinting... i found it more comfortable than holding on to the bar itself... more hand placements prevents hand numbness and boredom (read: dozing-off during rides) ;D

Bar ends are great for climbing. I don't have them now on my S-Works because I have a riser bar on. And PLEASE, don't put bar ends on risers! Hehehe. ;D

For off-the-saddle sprints and last-minute pedal burst once you're almost on the top of the climb. Your hands somehow feel the comfort and momentum when resting on the bar ends.

I had them in the past and found them useful. After crashing and having them break off, I realized that I could climb just as well without them. Just get creative and find other hand positions when climbing those long rhythmic sections. Everyone is different and you have to seek your own conclusion.
I may not be the best person to take advice from... I've been taking parts off my bike to see what I can remove and still have a fun and safe ride. In an effort to do as little maintenance as possible I've removed my computer, bar-ends, suspension, derailleurs and gears, quick release seat clamp, bottle cages and all my decals. I'm taking the minimalist approach (although my camelbak is getting heavier).

bar ends on a straight handle bar ok, but for riser bar in my opinion is a no no, because of the stress on the bends.

umm... bar-ends? yes it helps a lot... better choose a bar end that is right for you and your bike...
there are many bar-ends to choose from... extended (like the serfas).... mini.... short.. meduim... long.. extra long... very long....
there are also weight issues.... i hate the serfas bar-ends because of it's weight... but it's very useful and somesort stylish....
as i remember, powertools bar-ends are one of the light bar-ends you can installl w/c costs around 800 php... mahirap n yata maghanap nun...

Bar ends not only on climbs but on sprints. changes the attack position dramatically (for the good) if you use bar ends.

i'm going to experiment on putting Bar-ends on my DH Rig, as i've heard that there are some race course that has CLIMBS and flat sections.... i'll check if it works.... hehehe... The legendary Greg "H-Bol" Herbold had this set-up in his DH bike back in the day. Riser bar with bar-ends? Looks awkward but if you're The H-Bol, no one will question it.

Already been 4 years since giving up the bar ends. As I mentioned above post. You can conpensate moving your butt near the tip of the saddle and lean forward during climb.

barends are really useful for long rides too as they ease wrist and arm fatigue on rotator flexors. its been quite a while since i used a pair so my doing before with barends left me gripping the grip butts eventhough i'm not using any

bar ends!..hill climbs: for as long you used the straight bar! and it should aligned together with angle of your stem.... i'd also cut the bar end lenght to 1inch, masyado lang kc mahaba, prang cute sya... for me it's make my riding smooth especially up hill climb-it helps you to relaxed in an upright position--for long road biking okey naman no problem..........!i'm using it now for 3 years.

sir, some riders have negative angle setup on their stem. as for me I'm not comfortable setting up my bar end lower than 0 deg. I guess it would be better for individuals to find out the best position of their bar ends... as long as the bar ends don't go in the middle (I've seen lots of these) of the handle bar that would be fine. .02 bar ends!..hill climbs: for as long you used the straight bar! and it should aligned together with angle of your stem.... i'd also cut the bar end lenght to 1inch, masyado lang kc mahaba, prang cute sya... for me it's make my riding smooth especially up hill climb-it helps you to relaxed in an upright position--for long road biking okey naman no problem..........!i'm using it now for 3 years.

@ k. salot: oh, diba ang cute ng bar end pag putol, hehehehe @ as bar end is concern k.verong-it's your position of choice to set up your bar ends..... yah i saw some bikers using the wrong bar ends position prang mga horn ng kalabaw hehehehe.. anyway pag pasensyahan nlang natin sila o if ever ignore them nlang-iwas away sa kalye hehehe, baka sabihin pa nila pakilamero hehehehe...merry christmas nlang sa kanila... bar end in the middle is for road bike they used it as an extended for their time trial set-up not familiar with it...... but usually i saw some bar end place in the middle of the bar, kanya-kanya lang style sa set-up....

I have a few riding buddies here whose bar "ends" are used as bar "middle". I just let them be. They say they use it during cruising mode. Aerodynamic daw when then hold the bar during high speeds. It's somewhat true but they sacrifice stability though.
