I haven't seen somebody talking/using a cellphone while biking but there are people driving cars/trucks/motorcycle who do just do it regardless of traffic.

i saw someone in the sta rosa-tagaytay ride last sunday with a "speakerphone" type of music player in his pocket or bag... so its not covering your ears and you can still listen to surroundings while enjoying the music (too bad if your kasama doesnt like your music!) but anyway, what do you guys think about that? sometimes it helps in climbing long hills if you have nice music to pump you up he he he...

I think it's fine as long as the volume is set at a reasonable level (meaning you can still hear stuff outside your earphones). Anyway, if you're gonna do this, might as well do it in style with the Oakley Thump ;D

alertness and focus is one aspect that should be always be present everytime you ride your bike.
anything that would distract you from focusing on your line, the road, the trail is what would make the ride unsafe.
admittedly though, adding music in the equation helps ease out the boredom of a long commute... what i do is focus and use the R-headphone! bwehehehehehe..
texting while driving? yeah they do that.. texting while riding.. is a skill though...
ride safe.

Yeah but doesn't music sometimes help you focus din? Like playing Danger Zone while going down fast, feeling Tom Cruise ka in Top Gun hehehehe

Wow! Thump!!! It's a blaaassst!!! But I doubt if they'd have big market for that badas* locally. Way, way t eXpensive!!! I also bring my MP3 player with me. Use it during those long cruel uphill climbs... Makes me upbeat and it really helps a lot during those punishing climbs. But as the adage goes: what comes up must go down. Engaging DH, i turn it off though... Just my 2Β’.

Suggest you guys part with your music box, you can still listen to it some other time. Your not only endangering yourself but also the people who will probably riding around you.

i share the same view...although i have a lot of friends who do listen to music while riding their bikes..unless siguro mahinang mahina...when i'm riding i want full concentration on what i'm doing... communication between riders is essential not only on road but during trail rides as well.. specially if the area is unfamiliar...butas! bato! tae! barbwire! kaliwa! kanan! truck! wow chick! can u imagine missing that last one..hehe!

most of you guys frequent amari, i wonder if you've come across an old guy. he's riding an easy rider setup bike but he's got huge speakers at the back. you'll hear him coming by the blaring FM radio station.
it's nice to have music when he comes but that's enough distraction for the ride. i actually find it better riding when he's quite a distance away.

BLARING sounds on a BIKE? How pompous can he get? Hee heee! But personally, I find that pretty distracting! I wouldn't want to be riding with anyone with loud music (let alone blaring). It's ok if they use headphones, that's their choice (a dangerous one though) When I bike, especially on trails or quaint barrio roads, I'd rather listen to "natural" sounds

Just sharing... You might find it quite interesting though.
Pulled out from the pages of MBA July 2005; under the column of MBA Training & Fitness.
Thus;
Volume & Safety There is a mistaken belief that slipping in earphones blocks out all ambient noise. We have not found out this to be true. Earphones alone seem to reduce noise at about the same level as a thick headband. It is the volume at which you play your music that is the determining factor for reducing outside noise. Blast it and you won't notice the bear running up behind you until it takes a bite of your shoulder. We are able to carry on a conversation or hear a rider coming up behind when the music player's volume is set to a reasonable level.
Use your common sense when taking musical accompaniment on your ride. Rides on tight or densely foliated trails with limited forward visibility may be best ridden with the ear unplugged. If you have good trail visibility, use your eyes and enjoy the tunes.
Thanks for reading.
More Power, Guys!
Until then ride on!

i saw it!! the "simple" man who's riding his bike with speakers.. ang sound pa nga e "chocolate"...=) for me, still natural "music" is the best than the loud bangers sounds ung tipong dumadagundong when you heard it.. parang my shock wave, it was like the passenger jeep with a sound set-up of 4 speakers: 12-15 inches in size including 2 amplifier. un ung jeep na nkasaby ko nung pauwi ako from amari

hehe that was a good one Tolits.
We also have a not so frequent visitor (hope it stays that way) at UP. This guy has a set of speakers on his mountain bike playing "chocolate". MP3 players are ok once you get to resting points or tambayans right? Our sport requires us to maximize all the senses we need (sixth sense?) specially on DH or Urban courses.
uy chick! hehehe

I have a friend who sometimes rides with headphones/earbuds. Sometimes he cant hear us calling him. One time, he just plain took off and left us, not knowing that we stopped for a snack. Ayun, now we call him antisocial. Since then, he hasnt been using his music.
Its nice to have a soundtrack to your ride, but overall, I think its dangerous when youre on a road or trail with other people and other vehicles.
