Hello Roadies,
I'm in the process of building my roadbike. Would like to ask for your opinion/s regarding the Shimano group SORA & TIAGRA.
Which of the two "grupos" would you prefer and why?
Cheers!

go for tiagra because it's already 9 speed and has true sti shifting. sora has a thumblever, which means you can only shift when your on the hoods, but not the drops.

Hello!
Thanks for all your responses. I guess it would be the Tiagra. There is a price difference of only 1,500 between the SORA & TIAGRA.
Ride safely!

A general rule to follow is to buy the best equipment you can afford If you have to hide it from your wife/parents/gf/guardian/sugardaddy , then you probably cant afford it

my 2 cents i hope you can buy a 105 as compared to both. 30k=ultegra 20k=105 total weight difference 0f 105 and ultegra is 100grams. for mtb peeps 100 grams difference is crank of lx and xt while for road its the whole system. difference of lx to xt crank=2k or less? if you can afford to stay away from the sora better. why??? in the 2006 manual of shimano the sora was removed, which probably equates to outdated or phase out. road=10 speed current standard. mtb=9 speed current standard. just go a step below

Tiagra before is 13K only w/o its cyclometer, and 17th w/ the cyclometer, Sora i think is below 10k ( sana )

i'm also thinking of building a road bike myself that is within my budget... i want a 10 speed bike but the 105 gruppo, i know is somewhat steep (or i am wrong?)... so i'm thinking of having: 1. 105 STI's 2. 105 10spd cogset 3. 105 rear derailleur 4. 105 brakes, & 5. tiagra or sora system (what is left)
what do you think guys?

105 is enough for a road bike, or even Tiagaras and Soras, even using Dura Ace or Ultegrawill not make your bike as Fast as you think and tough like an mtb, ( but admitted it will make your bke "malupit" )weight difference is not an issue, it's your cadence power that needs to be improve.
If the Bike of Mr. Armstrong has Sora gruppo, 'ya think somebody can beat him with a Dura Ace Race Group?
Sometimes using hi-end products are more on pride rather than use or the purpose.

hi guys, i was about to post a question on these 2 road groups... good thing there's an existing one already But, this time, i need your opinions on their latest editions, and if you'll ask me, their "looks" and specs are altogether different: 2008 Sora (@ 8K pesos): tinyurl.com/yr25uq2007 Tiagra (@ 11.5K pesos): tinyurl.com/2e7qkmhow about these wheelsets? WH-R500 (@ 3K pesos): tinyurl.com/3dg29gWH-R550 (@ 3.8K pesos): tinyurl.com/ytzdm8i'm planning to build an entry road setup with either of these groups and wheelsets. my budget falls from 20 to 25K. lastly, is the GTS R53b (?) frame / fork set a good choice too at 6K? your thoughts? thanks,

The 2008 Sora is 9-speed already. And it looks much much better than from previous years.

posible21, that's true. actually, both groups indeed had an "upgrade" in looks and specs. it looks like the finish (Tiagra is anodized while Sora is painted) and STI levers spell the 3.5K price difference, and that makes me think twice archangel1911, i got these prices from a bike shop in guiguinto bulacan, along mac arthur hi-way. BTW, these groups didn't come with hubs. thanks,

Go for the Tiagra! But I'd rather save more for the 105. I've used 105 9 sp before and they're so fantastically reliable!

I've used 105 9 sp before and they're so fantastically reliable! well, to my perception, most roadies settle for (at least) the 105 group. the latest 105s goes for PhP 17K (10 speed, w/o hubs) from the same shop i inquired in. it's really a matter of budget and purpose that sets me one to two notches down from 105s. this will be my first road bike, and as much as possible, i want to settle for something that fits my simple goal (i.e., weekend spins) and wallet (of course). thanks rt

I used a Sora before on my road bike... used it also for racing... its not a big deal for me if i can't shift on the drops since most of the time, i'm using the hoods . Here's the drive train: cassette was Shimano Ultegra 8spd (11 - 24T)... calipers were 105, derailluers were 105 Black (for front and rear), bottom bracket was Shimano Ultegra, crankset was Shimano Santi w/ 105 chain rings and ultegra chain. Oh, i missed that rig. Ride Hard and Ride Safe...

archangel1911, yes i will posible21, With the "slight" price difference with the other, WH-R550 seemed to be a better choice. it looks great too with its 16/20 (F/R) spokes and hubs, so i might go for this one instead. @everybody, thanks for your replies, i appreciate it! regards,
