also depends on the model. rock shox makes good forks but they have some pretty bad ones on the lower end. if you want to compare apples to apples make a poll of fork models for a specific use and price range (xc race, trail, am, dh, etc)

For Heavy riders like me, Manitou is my choice, from the Nixxon to their baby model AXEL, it's the toughest! I will love FOX later if I have the bucks

Just get at least mid level forks from the big four (Fox, Marzocchi, Rockshox and Manitou) suited for type of riding and you wont be disappointed. The range of models is so vast and diverse, and the factors so numerous, it would be impossible to name the best fork brand. I can tell you, however, to avoid RS Judys/Darts, Marzocchi MZ series, and anything lower than the Manitou R7 Comp.
