Yup. The cleat retainer really rubs. You can, however, make a blocker at home.
Buy a guage 18 sheet of stainless steel or thinner gauges. Or you can just get some scraps for free at machine shops and jeepney repair shops. I think it is the bars of the actual pedal when it is engaged that causes the indentation and not the cleats. and your idea of putting a stainless blocker is better that plastic ones (no offense alphabolt) coz the force applied when pedalling or standing on the pedals is too much for it(plastics) and would still press through the plastic blockers..my 2 cents..

my advice would be to get at least the candy or eggbeater c models. they're maintenance friendly and rebuildable using the crankbrothers rebuild kits. they're expensive, a little under P4k i think, but if you're set on spending for crankbros you might as well get those.

i originally wanted to buy a black candy sl - but it's out of stock. so, i settled for the smartys i just wanted to go lighter this time and retire my mallet c smartys are categorized in the lower end/entry level in the CB line of pedals - hence it's much cheaper than the candys got mine from HK for P2.5K thru the kind assistance of bongjumper because of its material composition, smartys are lighter than the candys i've used my smartys for the first time last sat while doing the maarat - afp route with barry and so far so good

Thanks for you inputs pazigrider. I was looking at the Smarty's because I was bitten by the upgrade bug and so I wanted to change my pedals to 'dual-function' and Crank Bros. entry level Smarty's seems to be the best choice. After seeing king's suggestion, I realized that with the little price difference between Smarty's and the Candy C (at least from what I see from the price lists available on the web - eBay), I get the added benefit of the pedals being rebuildable. I will most likely be able to save a lot if I get these from eBay as compared to getting them from LBS's here as XCTOFI pointed out. So far, the best price I have seen so far from eBay is ~Php2500 for the Candy C.

personally - i would rather go for the candy sl than the candy c if the price difference is not that much but it's just me ;D

yup ako rin. if you can make the jump get sl instead of c. or for that price, you might also want to consider the shimano 959 xtrs. that would probably be the only other pedals i would get if i wasn't already using crankbrothers pedals on my bikes.

Thanks for the inputs. I don't think I am willing to take that leap in to getting the Candy SL as the jump is quite significant . Just in case anybody is interested, I was able to check out the local prices of Smarty and Candy C and they'er Php3500 (Sabak, Pasong Tamo) and Php3800 (VeloCity).

pazigrider, your post made me realize that the Smarty's are actually lighter compared to Candy C and even SL. But I guess the material of the Candy's are more durable compared to Smarty's, am I right? Sorry, I am not really familiar with the strength/quality of the different materials.
Anyway, it's good that weight is not so much of a determining factor for me right now; it's more of the robustness of the pedals.

King - question for you.
Are CB cleats compatible with all pedals? I noticed that the cleats that came with my eggbeaters don't seem to work well when I rode a friends bike that had mallets and I had a hard time disengaging. Or is it because my cleats a worn out?
I purchased an extra set of cleats for CB's road pedal (Quattro) thinking it would be compatible with my pedals. The cleats look different, but I'm thinking it will still work. What's your experience? Thanks.

If I may answer the question.... Bo, In my experience, it's the interference between my shoe's sole and the platform of the Mallet C. I have to put the plastic shims (or you can do some trimming sa sole) to get a better clearance then it becomes easier to disengage. No problem though with the Eggbeaters and Candies.

I concur with Banny "Bee" The cleats work with all the CB pedals...the Mallet C need the cleats to reach the spindles that why you might need to raise it (cleats) a bit using the supplied plastic spacers...also dont use the big-claw scrappers (one big onse and one standard ones supplied)...These require more spacers since it lifts your shoes away from the spindles Only use the big claw scrappers when you want to use the Mallets as dedicated platform peds...for more traction to your shoe's soles Enjoy your pedals ...they re great!

cool. thanks Bee. I was able step into the Mallets with such ease and was very surprised when I couldn't get out. I thought using such worn out cleats might have been an issue.

hi bo. yup, you get interference with some shoe soles with crankbrothers pedals. if you have worn cleats, the float gets bigger and bigger and after a while you might actually pull your foot off the pedal on hard efforts. happend to me a couple of times before i relaced my cleats. by the way, re. the quattro cleats, did you get the one without float? and did it have the standard, two hole mount or the look-style 3 bolt pattern? i use a 3-hole adaptor for my road shoes and they're no good. the little dogbone where the screws go in strip easily. crankbrothers sent me replacements but i stripped one again. www.crankbrothers.com/3hole_adapter.php?itemId=74660

the quattro i have has two holes. i got them for a bargain and was going to use them with my mtb shoes and eggbeaters. i don't have a quattro pedal. i was hoping they were compatible with current setup.

looks like crankbrothers decided to address the problem themselves www.cyclingnews.com/tech.php?id=/photos/2007/tech/features/sea_otter_507/Crank_Brother_ShieldsAfter reading paolomiguel's messager regarding the ruining of the sole of the eggbeater, I decided to take a look at the soles of my shoes and lo and behold, the pastic part is being "eaten" up. There is a deep indentation where the metal of the cleats is in contact w/ the sole of the shoes! (exactly like the pic on the ebay webpage) I've seen the ebay picture and will be fabricating a pair. I'll inform you guys how it turns out. Yup. for such a simple device...a spacer - shield really...we dont need to buy it Just get an empty plastic container used for petroleum products (oils, additives etc etc)...get black ones so "swabe look" ...then trace your cleats + add 1 cm at top and bottom ...cut...punch holes voila! ;D

I have the Mallet M.Its looks so nice as a platform pedals. Very good when you dont use bike shoes. Even slippers would do. My problem started when I started using cleats. Its so hard to lock and unlock the cleats. I fell several times and my cleats are still engaged. I transferred it to my wife's bike because she does not use cleats.

I have been using eggbeater SL's since October or so last year. It is a PinoyMTBiker market special from Padi Banny (Bee). It was hard to clip for the first five minutes or so but unclipping was so easy. But naturally I forgot to unclip before stopping for a coupla times hehehe. Still, the learning curve was pretty shallow, hell it might not be a curve at all since clipping and unclipping became all but natural in a coupla hours of use. Now I can clip into the pedals even without consciously trying to and I automatically unclip when things either get a little bit hairy or when the bike slows down to a halt.
I have not tried shimano SPD so I have no other clipless pedals to compare but I have zero complaints with the eggbeater SL. They are so easy to use and do not require any maintenance (so far). They never look dirty, they look like new, there is no paint that peels, and most importantly - I rarely hit anything while pedalling or freewheeling downhill.
My only wish is a "platform" that can "clip" into the eggbeater and transform it into a platform pedal every now and then when I want to pedal on slippers or with ordinary shoes ...
They are also the first thing that everybody notices on the bike. The typical reaction being "pare, sira ba pedal mo?" hehe. ;D
Count me as an eggbeater fan. I might replace my frame, my fork, etc but I am pretty confident that the eggbeaters will stay (or at least get upgraded to 2Ti or 4Ti hehe).
