yup i've been waiting for this...the legs i got from arturo ijan's shop did'nt perform that well...they just broke down halfway the race. hehehe! well, whatever that helmet mounted light my team mates paul and jay were using don't buy them...jay's i believe lasted only for half a lap...paul was not even able to use his...and his primary light got scared and jump off his bike hahaha! i wonder what happened to paul kung nangyari yan dun sa tricky turn sa dh portion...i guess he was holding it in his mouth all the way back to our camp...lucky someone brought an electrical tape. invest on a good quality light...my halogen cateye served me well.

Powerbar Recovery Drink! My legs weren't that sore after the race (but my shoulders and lower back were killing me though). I guess these things did the job in terms of making sure my body was fully recovered for the next round of laps. Really felt good througout the race (except again for my back that really frustrated me, my legs were good but the rest of my body wasn't cooperating much).
Ion Energy Drink -- tastes a whole lot better than other energy drinks like Red Bull, actually tastes a bit like Dalandan Soda.
En Snow -- hehehe Japan power drink I got from the McVarckis. On the label it said something like 'Cant Seen But Can Eaten . . . ' true enough, it looks like a clear fluid but when you drink it it feels like there are sagos inside. hehehehe
Agree with Tolits, if you plan to do more night rides, invest in good quality light, especially if you want to go fast in the DH sections. I was mounting like 3 lights on my bike just to see enough. Big limiter talaga if you can't see far enough.
At night also, better be wearing some sort of eye protection. No sun, but it really got dusty during the race.

yeah, those 200++ buckaroo lights from landmark doesn't appear to be sturdy at all. If i remember it right, Brusko wasn't able to use one at all since the plastic clamp cracked when it was being mounted.i don't think it can even hold its own weight specially when going thru mini rick gardens (imagine the weight of that thing with batts being held on the bar by a brittle clamp).the others where lucky enough to have used it. I used a cat eye bar mounted light (borrowed from Onie) - its a good one, not too strong though but the built-in strap is so convenient u can strap it on the helmet easily but it did have a blue tone to the light in the middle part that gave a diff depth on the trail. My primary light was a LED flashlight taped to my helmet. @ 200 bucks, its strong enough to be a primary light.did compliment the small cat eye on the bars.
WTB epic wolf 1.95 - with the proper pressure on it (and thats a lil over the minimum tire pressure),it holds up pretty good to variable terrain. its fine but there are better ones. (michelin comp s light, overall, its still the best i tried so far)

i was lucky and didnt have any mechanical trouble. i only had to lube the chain in the morning. got great performance from my main light as well, the Kovea Super Duo halogen i posted earlier. i taped it on my handlebar this time, instead of mounting it on my helmet like i had it during our test night ride the weekend before the race. the battery pack (4D bats) fit into my bottlecage. i also used a Energizer LED headlamp that agu lent me.
of course i didnt really get to test them that much since i slept around 5 hours hehe

It's my Continental Gravity UST tyres. I ran it with 28psi front and 29psi rear. Really helped especially on that scary downhill right turn with loose rocks. Gripped really good, I'd say. Also, no worries about pinch flat on that "dip" after the scary s-curve downhill where a rock garden awaits you at the very start of the uphill portion. Sagasa lang nang sagasa. ;D ;D ;D

oo nga pala, i used a lot of the Power Bar products- bars, gels, Endurance & Recovery drinks. also ate a lot of pasta & noodles (baon ko & baon nila lito), bread & dried mangoes. i also always wore a hydration pack and used it up (1.5l) every 3-4 rounds, plus the energy drink in a water bottle. i must have used up around 3 gallons of water for the whole race (i brought 5).

used my specialized adrenaline 2.1 front and specialized roll-x pro 2.0 at the back. quite happy with the adrenalines, but I feel the roll-x pro doesn't give much grip in the rear, not to confident with it when taking fast turns

I consumed about 4 of these in the entire race. Worked well for me. Lactic acid build-up wasn't that bad even on hard spinning. Also ate Cliff bars- about two. A month prior to the race, my diet consisted of brown rice or pasta. I think that did the trick- of course with training.

hey guys, i was thinking that it might be a good idea to share your experiences on the products you used on the recently concluded 24hr race to see which products are reliable (performed best) & which products failed you. dont buy torq stems . specially those with small bolts (i forgot the size but its smaller than the usual). i over torqued one of these that's why it made those creeking sounds come race day. yeah, my bad. but if only the bolts were big enough, i wouldn't've over torqued it in the first place. a fail safe way whenever joining races (if they allow using other bikes/parts other than what you're using) is to bring an extra bike along. just in case something breaks down, you can use the other bike or swap parts with it. another advantage is you can compare rides and use which is better. i wish i could've done this on race day itself. apparently i used a HT. FS somehow in my opinion works best on the la mesa trail. the trail is hard packed and the rocks could range from the typical gravel to baby rockheads. the trail was so hard packed, a lot of folks experienced bobbing in some sections. in my opinion, the trail was a combination of hardpacked soil, varying rock gardens, or dusty/dry. another tip is bringing along a floor pump (yeah the one with the guage). this is for you to guage which best tire pressure would work for you on race day. it took me 3 tries before i got the right pressure. even bringing a shock pump can do wonders come race day. you can set the preload on your fork that would work better for you, supple or stiff. you can also bring different types of tires just in case you feel that soft compund would work better than hard compound tires or knarlier tires vs fast rolling, etc. my tire setup was kenda karma 2.0 (480grams) at the rear and maxxis flyweights (330 grams) upfront. i was using v-brakes. another advantage of bringing an extra bike is if the weather turns sour. you could have the other bike setup with diskbrakes. thank god it didn't rain. or else....hehe. i was really hell bent on using my HT that's why i didn't bring it with me thinking that everything will be ok....not. i used a petzl duo headlamp and during the race, the only light that outshined mine was coming off from a motorcycle, hehe. ;D the battery though was mounted on the shoulder strap of my backpack becoz it was too heavy to be attached on the helmet. i also used 2, P2?? worth, handle bar mounted bike light. mine worked flawlessly but only becoz i spent a lot of time experimenting and practicing in the dark. and the reason why it held on to the handlebar is i applied lotsa loctite on it, hehehe ;D and dont forget to bring a bike stand and tools.

although i didnt finsh the race i still had the time to test some product and parts, my bike is a mongoose fireball hardtail, not really suited for 24hr racing but it served my 200lbs frame well, i was using rockshocks tora 318 , its very plush on the downhill section and soaked up the rock garden, for tires i used nokian x-trak 2.1 ,a bit on the heavy side but it really sticks to the dirt, for lighting, i used a handlebar mount cateye el500 led light and a cateye halogen light duct taped on my helmet, i didnt encounter any problems with my light setup but i think next time i'll double the amount of lighting system on my bike , as for fuel, i ate whatever we have brought at the campsite, ensaymadas(bread with butter ,cheese and hams),potato chip, lechon manok(roast chicken),adobong baboy(pork stew),rice, bananas and many more , but i think gatorade is a must, i also tried some powergels and it helped a lot

Aside from Arnel's (alphabolt) cateye halogens the next best thing was the inexpensive energy drink my teammate recommended. Yup, you guessed it "SUNBOLT" its only P49.00 for a box of 6 sachets. I sachet for one water bottle. It provides more than the comparative amounts of minerals that gatorade does at a fracton of the cost. It even tastes better because it isn't too sweet or concentrated. I've now switched to sunbolt, it kept me going during that grueling 24 hr race.
