40k for a new frame? That gives a lot options.
As far as the choices that you listed, the best pedaller is the NRS. At 40k, look for the high end version (Team or Air).
But if you can wait, Trance is supposedly better (Maestro suspension, Giant's version of VPP). It hasn't come out as frame only. I've only seen a whole bike. Ang ganda!
I think Ross has the most options at that price point (Jamis Dakar, KHS XC904, Xtension Xpilot, etc.). You might want to take a look so you can see for yourself.
All the '04 and '05 models are now better in pedalling efficiency due to the new rear shocks (Propedal, SPV).

Sir, I have tried Trek Fuel 80 and ended up with the Giant Trance. Well, both frames are good, but I'm very much happy with the Trance 3 (frameset), especially the looks, pogi points, hehehe. Bought it at EXTREME BIKE SHOP...Ty John and Liezl.

40k.... kailangang mag sideline... di mag merienda... mag-bike pa opisina... sumayaw sa malate... sana mag mura pag tagal. pero for it's price, sulit ito. cheapest vpp style frame (the only other ones are the blur, intense, and marin which isn't available here). Hydroformed tubes and fox float propedal rear. If you buy a new NRS and upgrade the rear shock, it'll still cost as much

nasa 50k ang Stumpjumper FSR 100mm sa Dan's.
Mukhang manipis ang seatstay, chainstay and pivots ng FSRxc.
Trance pa rin!

a bit OT any truth to the rumor that the NRS line will soon be discontinued and that the trance will take over its niche? btw, salsa not part of choices? frame is within your budget.

Not yet sir, we're still exploring some trails back here in the province (Laguna) and I haven't tested it in real climbs like maarat (from what I've heard), maybe in the near future we will be able to see maarat and roxas trails. Btw sir, where is roxas trails?

Even RC of MBA action chose Trance over a Blur and FSRxc. From MBA site:
Q. I've been riding my giant xtc hardtail for a while and i wanted to move up to a full suspension. But unfortunately i can't decided which I should go with...specialized fsr xc pro(black satin)or giant trance 2...or santa cruz blur...? I live in the Oakland, California and over here we have trails and drops. I ride pretty much every weekend and breaks. but i would also like to take my bike onto the street for occasional cruises back and forth. Seng/mbaction.com - 3/27/2005 12:07:18 PM
A. RC: Go for the Giant Trance. It pedals great and its handling is very versatile.

Another place to check out is All Terra.
They have Kikapu, Dakar, Caballero and Trance frames right now, all within that price range. I'm sure they can give you a good deal on it too.

There's lots of good frames out there, guess everyone have their own preference. But it doesnt ends there, you still have list of parts to go thru to make for your dream bike. I suggest to tryout all the bikes they suggested. IF by chance you stray on my area (muntinlupa/las pinas) I can let try my rig just to get the feel of it... just hope you dont weigh more/less than I do. Never tried the Giant's Maestro line yet, but if it behaves similar to a VPP then its a good buy considering the cost of VPPs.

I've been using the NRS since 2002 and it's just a great all-around bike. Although not as plush as the Trance, it nevertheless gets the job done.
What do you want to do?
If you are into going uphill fast and don't want to bother with bobbing and lock-outs, then the NRS is for you.
But if you are more into the fast singletrack and bit of jumping, get the Trance. The Trek is good for racing just like the NRS, with a bit less travel.
I'm actually considering the Trance 2 right now. But then again I am not in a hurry ... the NRS still keeps me smiling.

marv... been to al terra before they got many good frames there ;D even harder for me to decide warlock... thanks if iv got in to your place ill gladly drop by at your shop... i weight 150lbs... height 5'8... radical1962... i like to do fast climbing and with a smooth plush during downhill and bumps... my primary concern is comfort riding... a frame that can absorb bumps on trails and xc, yet easy to pedal on uphill with less bop... i havent tried the nrs, the trek for me is to hard, less comfort... the kikapu is to soft and active... does any 1 tried specialized xc frame i herd its has a nice suspension and its been award the editors choice in 2004 BICYCLING

One thing I noticed sa Kona Kikapu, the rear parts solder seems to be thin, I don't know if this is strong enough to handle common drops.
