I'm having a hard time understanding why people could sit through hours and hours of telenovelas made by pinoys (which most have one dimensional and soooooo predictable outcomes)? And those fantasy series that they make........ Oh my God! I don't have any background in those arts and special effects and stuff but if you played them side by side with shows made by other countries in the 90's, it's as if they made their shows at the same time.... And the under sea palace..... WOW! Theres this small KTV place that I see when I go home from work... Please ask them to shoot it there so the reef and backgrounds could be more realistic... I will provide the bubble machine! :-/I'm sorry for the people who will or alredy offended by this but can you guys please explain why?

you watch it for a minute then you gonna ask yourself, can someone be really as stupid as that character? then you will start to curse.."p#ta kung ako yan binaril ko yan eh!"...then you will ask your mother in law and wife "how in hell do you people managed to stand this show?!" then you will realize than you are more affected by it than the peeps who regularly watch it. hehehe!
please don't ask me what that means. ;D

I can't understand it too. On the other hand, my mother can't understand why I don't have a TV in my house.

ben Dover Don't worry... I won't... I'm already past that stage... Eventually someone will answer why they are watching it so that it makes the rating of a crapy show high which in turn gives the director, producer or someone the idea that this will do.... Hey I just remembered a "ORIGINAL" and "HIGHLY RATED" movie with stunning CG special effects!!! Resikolo!!! Now I know why they hold the Manila Film Fest!!!

HAY NAKU! Tell me about it. I'm already in New Jersey & my in-laws still have Filipino channels. Guess what my wife & her family watches whenever we're there for a visit (w/c is pretty much every weekend)? You'd think moving thousands of miles away from the Philippines would keep me away from oh-so-time-consuming-nonsense telenovela... Nope.
Anyway, I don't understand it either. And all the screaming during drama scenes doesn't help either from keeping away from it because you could here it from the other room. Ayayay!

The Filipino Channel I think is a real moneymaker for ABS-CBN. Ever wonder why most balikbayans just have to be on the Wowowee show? With regards to Pinoy TV, i dunno, i guess most people love formula . . . some dude has this hidden talent, becomes a hero, lots of drama with a leading lady, and then, whatever happens, they will end up happily together in the end (with the theme song playing in all it's glory). maybe it's comforting. maybe the actors/actresses are hot. btw, remember in the 80s when most pinoy flicks will end with the cops coming at the very end (with white towel wrapped in their heads) as the heroes somehow finish off the villaines, AND THEN, they have an excursion at the beach complete with song and dance! huwaw! hehehehehe Anyone have reruns of Iskul Bukol?

If you're a lonely OFW it will hit you . . . with Dolphy talking pa 'wherever you are in the world, the Filipino channel is with you'

honestly, its the shouting that i cannot stand...i already have enough of that at home hehe! dehins ba nila maiisip that you can also show intense emotions without shouting?
i don't believe we really have enough talented directors and scriptwriters...if you are gay and well connected, you're a director.

there are some good films that come out, but as you can see, it's not what the people want. usually these art films are shown in special cinemas only, sometimes only for a week. buuut, did you know some of our local telenovelas have cult followings in other countries (and not by Pinoys ah). cheenky tells me Pangako sa Iyo is a fave in Kenya. it's re-titled 'The Promise'

@ Xctofi, hehe. Yeah, I actually understand why they like it. Typical Filipino melodrama. I just grew up never really liking the telenovelas that came out.
@ Marcs, the Filipino TV ads are pretty cool. Seeing the beautiful places we have back home really makes you miss the Philippines more.
But seriously, they have got to change the plots of the shows, the way the actors/actresses act, the way they spend 1 full minute just for a close-up shot of the leading actor crying & then cuts to commercial. I bet you out of 30 mins, 15 mins is spent on close-up shots of the actors either crying, surprised, angry, laughing, etc. Such a waste of time.
We Filipinos definitely have the talent & brains to pull off amazing movies, say for instance, "Muruami". But instead of doing hard work, they just opt for easy, shallow, easy money-making flicks & shows. Tsk, tsk...
And yeah, Ben Dover's right. There are so many ways to show emotions other than just screaming.

A good point from the thread starter, why watch these telenovelas? what have become to the viewing public and suddenly got under the spell of these big media broadcasting companies what have happened to the late 80's and 90's satire programs aired at primetime? now it is invaded by krung-krungs, chin-chinn, arabi, indian, western etc...telenovelas thru the local telenovelas naman, I aint a big fan of any, I go on with my intuition that these actors/actresses are ae just but individuals that woul like to earn a living.... but the public is paying for them, feeding them - thru paying electric bills, buying their products thru ads and commericals, even buying 'em clothes with their signatures or even 'em pretty/good looking faces printed on posters, notebooks ;D ;D ;D the political reason behind this naman eh.... after the actors/actresses were molded as icons, saviour of the poor, idol, sweethearts, darling blah blah and yadha yadha .. we eventually groom them to politics, "nakakalasing ang pagiging sikat man" trans: stardom is intoxicating .. and to name a few of the both local and national posts is quite alarming...one even reached the top spot which is a bull@#$% for me have you imagined lately, how their antics and tweetums personality feed the hungry juan/juana dela cruz? ;D wakey-wakey pinokys!! ;D ;D just my dos pisetas ;D

With regards to the actors and actresses.... I think some of them (the old school ones) DO have talent... But sad to say some things with us Filipinos have trends... Example: -Philippine Airlines was the most innovative airport in Asia! But that was waaaaaay before I got to ride planes! Now they suck! -Our rice! We thought them how to plant, harvest, propagate, etc! But now we buy from them just to get by cheap rice... The trend? Start BIG! then just faaaaade away... I know for a fact that there are pinoys who could really act! I have watched a few plays myself.. Maybe the talented actors don't want to be molested by the gay directors? Or they are not handsome enough to be their "type"? ;D Actresses? Maybe it's all about marketability? Whats the use of talent if you can't turn on a guy or two? Hey? I watch Eat Bulaga only for the EB Babes dance.. Then after that back to cable.. hehehe..

I have "Hotbird". FYI! Most ads for bedspace, rooms for rent comes with the most sought after "TFC or Orbit" that shows channel 7.

he he he, got addicted to encantadia before. but the current telenovelas just don't cut it. i don't know. the actors are good but hmm....the scenes lack the "natural" reaction to situations.
my sis-in-law is locked on ABS-CBN telenovelas, so i get to watch it "by force" he he he. what sucks is that they're recycling 1.5 hour old movies into a 2 to 3 week telenovela.
i used to be a sucker for Heredero and Agila, ha ha ha, and yes I admit it, I watched it from episode 1 to the end. nya ha ha ha ha. i think i have reached my lifetime telenovela limit.
now where's that remote, gotta watch Psyched.

Does anybody know any pinoy action flick style series on TV?? Has there ever been a soul who tried to make a series like this?? Just wondering.. But just to clarify, it's supposed to be a REAL action series! Not a drama covered-up to be action! Or at least like hardcore lespu kind of a thing...

cmtulisYou're not alone brad, I can't watch even a 30 minutes telenovelas of any kind, but I could sit 6 hours or more watching foreign series like Supernaturals, Kyle XY, LOST etc. I also watch them at channel 9. For me, the story is always the same, just different charaters, scenarios and special effects. Yes the actors are good but not at all given role, sample is, he/she is some kind of an action hero, but look at the way he execute his/her moves, it's some kinda or should I say "mahinhin" trying hard. ben Dover That intense emotions that you mentioned before, I agree with that, that's the reason why I love foreign series than our local telenovelas. Foreign series has more action, puzzles, even the story/series is educational and the story has a twist which will make you think, what will happen next. And... it makes sense.
