ok guys, here's the thing... i noticed that many PinoyMTBiker members are either guitarists, guitar fanatics, band members, or ex-band members... with all due respect, will anyone here divulge his/her thing on the guitar, that is- the setup...? ok, i'll start... when i was in a band, many, many eons ago, i was 2nd guitar & vocalist for my dead/defunct band... my setup was straightforward... i use(d to own) a gibson sg (just like angus young of ac/dc uses...), a vintage 70's roland overdrive/wah pedal, & plugged straight to a marshall amp... no distortion effects or whatever... i just crank the overdrive intensity of the pedal & amp... very old school technique... i get a clean guitar sound plus the punch of the overdrives of the roland & the marshall amp... how about you guys out there? not that i'm secretly pirating your setup for your fave guitar sound, but just for us to share our tricks of the trade... additionally, i retired from the "rock 'n roll lifestyle" in 1991... cheers to all!!!!

Guitars: various custom strats/superstrats
Amps: Fender Champion Reverb 110 Fender '70 Bassman (orig, not reissue)
Effects: Ibanez Tube Screamer Ibanez Classic Metal DOD Digital Delay Zoom 505 Dunlop crybaby wah
When I was starting out, I was very much a distortion/effects nut. As I matured, I stripped down my setup to a basic guitar/tube amp combo, and lowered my distortion to an overdrive. I started studying jazz chords and harmony more seriously, and lowered the distortion a bit more to the point that I could play 7ths and 9ths without sounding muddy, but still allowing me to rock out power chords. At this point I was very much influenced by the tone of SRV, Eric Johnson and Jeff Beck. Tube amps rock.
Today I don't own any electric guitars or gear. Just a Seagull electro/acoustic.

Tube amps rock. wow, galing! kinda like how i started and feel about my setup. i started out with a synsonic strat and a DOD supra distortion. bought them at audiophile cubao. and then, i bought a zoom 3030. i was so delighted with all the things you can do with the darn thing. after that, i had my brother by me an ibanez. he even went home (from japan) to give it to me personally. best guitar i've ever owned. it was an RG series. and then i bought an amp. a fender de luxe 110. i especially enjoyed the over drive. it was crisp and clear and wasn't all too complicated. it delivered the right drive without much fuss. from then on, i prefer using my amp's overdrive. even the reverb is superb! how i wish though that my amp came with a chorus effect. now, i only use multi effects (zoom) when i need delay, chorus and all the crazy stuff. turning point of my guitar playing career is when i bought an instructional tape by troy stetina entilted speed mechanics (a nobody actually is a better teacher) which focused on hand techniques, tricks and drills to fully utilize the electric guitar. along with the instructional tape, another gadget that helped me improve is a drum machine. i bought the cheapest drum machine (zoom) available. it even came with bass accompaniment. after that, my fingers were flying. but it took me almost a year. i practiced 4-6 hours, almost daily. i was even doing solo jams with my drum machine and it sounded great. some of my guitar buddies can't actually believe i did it without any composing of any sort. all just out of the blue. unfortunately though, inspiration stopped when i out grew myself. i was looking for inspiration (good bandmates) but no one came. i was alone, a dying supernova. last thing i bought: an aria fullerton 2 (other than a pearl export series drumset) i haven't sold any of my equipment becoz i believe, that one day, somebody, either a drummer or a bassist, could bring out the best in me one more time. sole reason i didn't do any rock or indoor climbing. i guess you know how that stiffens the fingers.

My setup:
1992 Fender Strat, Floyd Rose II, limited reverse headstock like Dodong's strat of The Youth HyperMetal Homemade Compressor (didint work as a advertised hehe worked more like a preamp) Homemade Guitar Amp (yes an amp for the range of guitars sound with EQ pa hehe) or my small marshal lang.
Im a minimalist hehe, I never liked the early digital effects back then too 'digital'. Makapal naman tunog ko for the setup hehe prolly the pickups or my settings. I prefer playing my own instrumental stuff. Too bad I didn't record them.
Havent touched my guitar for 3 years sayang prolly forgot everything. I want to get a new amp so I can get back to playing.

get a digital amp. try an entry level from zoom. cheap and does the trick.
i honestly wouldn't go for multi-effects. i prefer the analog type aka stompboxes. but since i hate static noise from the cables, and the more cables you use to interconnect the stompboxes, the more you get static, i prefer to use a digital aka multi effects processor instead. besides, stompboxes dont come cheap. at least P3k for a bnew boss. my favorite stomp box is a metal zone from boss. unfortunately i never got to own one.

i practiced 4-6 hours, almost daily. Wow, that's a lot of time in the woodshed! I had a daily 1-2 hr practice regimen, from warmup to scales, to intervals and string skipping, arpeggios and sweeps, and finally etudes and practice pieces. My brother's the real guitar nut in the family, though. He would do most of the famous Steve Vai guitar workout. He also owns a bunch of guitars, including the custom Reb Beach Voyager I posted in a previous thread.

I don't have any "set\up" for my guitar before, the reason is I can't afford to buy those pricey stuffs, what I used to have was a cheap electric guitar from sta.mesa...hehehe... and my amp was our big karaoke... that was when I was in high school, then when i was in 4th year HS, I shifted to playing the bass giutar, again from sta.mesa( I'm an avid fan of sta.mesa guitars, specially when i was in college, because my school was near the area) up to college, I concentrated on playing the bass, main inspiration, Billy Sheehan of Mr.Big...Then I bought a bass guitar by RJ, had a band in college then it disbanded...Now, Im also a loner, no band members or what so ever.... just my bike...hehehe...OT na siguro ako... to the guitar/bass players, thumbs up to all of you!!! hope you could share the secrets of guitar playing to aspiring musicians like me!!!! ;D ;D ;D

Here's an article on alternate picking I wrote just over 10 years ago. I sent it to the newsgroup alt.guitar, and thanks to Google it's still available! tinyurl.com/zjy7uAt the time I was studying at Greenhills Music Studio, under Bobby de Santos. He was quite well known (as a guitar teacher) back then, but I've lost track of him.

He was my brother's teacher at UP. I studied classical guitar under Jerry Duran also at UP College of Music.

I'm really a drummer but I'm also a "hugot" bass player in other band.... years ago..... first I'm using my brad's Fender Jazz Bass... but it's too heavy for me.... so I bought a Gibson bass guitar at JB... and later on a friend lend me his Steinberger headless bass guitar.... I know how to play basic but no slaps.... I'm not that very good player either.... I still prefer to play drums coz that's really my ride....

i first started out with an old beatup guitar that someone sold me for about Php1,000.00 (you couldn't tune it right and the frets are so darn high) then when i joined a band i got hold of a fender strat body and got a neck from RJ and made myself a custom guitar!!!!
i progressed from a fender jaguar, gibson flying V, fender strat (all sold) and now in using a fender squire...
my effects are composed of (from guitar - to the amp) a wah pedal, BOSS heavy metal distortion and an ibanez flanger (all gone) now i use a ZOOM 2020 guitar effect just for fun!!!!!!!
and for amps... i started with a crappy amp where you don't need a distortion because the amp is distorted... then progressed to a peavy and fender (all gone) except for a practice amp which i got in quiapo a while back!!!!!!!
