The theater with the largest screen at the Mall of Asia
By Crispina Martinez Belen
Something to look forward to when the Mall of Asia (located at the reclamation area) opens one of these days is the first ever IMAX theater in the Philippines. It has one of the largest screens in the world. At 22 x 30 meters, it is the height of an eight-storey building.
According to Engr. Ric D. Camaligan, 1st vice president of Leisure Center, Inc. of the SM Group of Companies, they’ve lined up a number of exciting Hollywood blockbusters, among them "Everest," for showing at the IMAX theater. "It will be an awesome experience watching these movies on a real big screen the size of an eight-storey building," Ric gushed. Admission to the IMAX theater will be a little more than the usual admission price, he said.
The IMAX theater will definitely be a big attraction of Mall of Asia when it opens later this month. By the way, SM Shoemart recently entered into a partnership with San Miguel Corp. and Coca-Cola and with this, the theater will be named the San Miguel Coca-Cola IMAX Theatre. San Miguel and Coca-Cola customers will enjoy upcoming privileges and the support will help keep ticket prices affordable. This innovative marketing partnership will encourage programs to make the finest cinema experience in the world accessible to most Filipinos.
IMAX’s larger than life experience is made possible with a 15/70 film format, which is 10 times the size of regular 35mm film, and the best sound system in the world. The unique film format, projection technology and theatre design combine to make for the most immersive moviegoing experience available — with images of unsurpassed sharpness and clarity never seen before in the Philippines. Some films will be "in your face" 3D that make you think you are part of the movie - not the "gimmicky" 3D in the past, but IMAX’s cutting edge 3D technology that has mesmerized audiences around the globe, taking moviegoing to a whole new level.
Some films will appeal to students and families such as the famous IMAX film "Everest." IMAX 3D underwater and space films take you to places you would otherwise be unable to go. However, IMAX has also recently gone mainstream with films such as the last two "Harry Potter" releases, "Batman Returns," "Star Wars Episode ll," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and others, through its proprietary IMAX DMR technology which digitally transforms the original films to IMAX’s format — both picture and sound.
The San Miguel Coca-Cola IMAX Theatre will show both Hollywood blockbusters converted to the IMAX format, as well as original 15/70 films, some in IMAX and others in IMAX 3 D format. Several Hollywood blockbusters to be transformed into IMAX’s format for 2006 include the new "Poseidon," "Superman Returns," "Happy Feet" (in IMAX 3D only at the San Miguel Coca-Cola IMAX Theater) and "Ant Bully" (also in IMAX 3D format).
Indeed, with San Miguel Coca-Cola IMAX Theatre, moviegoing will never be the same in Manila.
