What is the ideal width of handle bar for an SS bike. Thanks mga SS brothers (and sisters)! Bee

Hey Bee
I've been riding with 28" DH bars. Ride with bars as wide as you can comfortably do so. I'm able to get more leverage with the wide bars... you'll need them when climbing steep hills. I also have a 2" stack height, 5 degree stem and riser bars... raising the bar height allows me to get over the pedals while standing.

True! True! You'll need the leverage for mashing up 'dem hills! But it'll also depend on yer riding style and personal preference, I set up my single speed as a freeride hardtail with a 27 inch bar and a 1.5 inch rise. I like to keep my bar low for the jumps and the 70mm stem helps with the leverage when pulling up for bunnyhops, but that's my setup. But sticking with a wide handlebar is a good bet!

Bee
Skarhed has a good point and his setup works for his type of riding. His stem length is about 30mm shorter than mine and gives a different front/back balance compared to my rig. What kind of riding do plan on doing with the SS?
Gearing also depends on the type of riding you'll be doing. Taller gear for jumping and urban assault, shorter gear for climbing.
My stem length puts me over the front wheel more and works for xc riding and climbing. with gearing of 36:20 I can do long gradual climbs and it's still low enough to do short steep hills with a burst of power. Long steep hills require me to rest often.
Best to experiment... borrow several different stems and get a collection of cogs.

welcome to the faith! (sensya ka na sa melodrama) get the widest bars you can, start at 27" i'm saying that because i prefer wide riser bars when doing street/urban/pavement but once rode trail (32:16 gears) with a regular straight bar and an xc stem during the penitencia ride and quite liked it i hope you'll get to like the side-to-side action you'll need when doing hills, pavement or not. all you need is one! bo/ef/alien: somebody bought my SS when i took it to Singapore, can't resist bec. of the good price (mahal piyesa dun!) it was my overgrown BMX what with track fork/horizontal dropouts, chain tugs, izumi chain and cro-mo 27" bars, just imagine if i could put a 3-piece crankset and that cro-mo fork from da bomb, yummy! but i know i'm just daydreaming bec it ain't mine anymore... about the collection of cogs bo suggested, he had to travel USA to Manila to show me how

Thanks for your replies, mga brothers. You are pointing me to the right direction. Another question... is the 175mm length cranks OK for the SS setup? Thanks! Bee

bo/ef/alien: somebody bought my SS when i took it to Singapore, can't resist bec. of the good price (mahal piyesa dun!) owen - you sold your SS?! that was a great build, at least you got some good money for it. you'll have another one built up in no time. what are you riding now? my RS Sid was in the lockout position the last ride and now it seems to be stuck there... I might have to ride the geared bike for now. seems like we're both without our SS. keep the faith and get another one soon. anyone have the same issue with their Sid fork? I'm hoping it's just the adjuster that's stuck and not the valve. bo

bo: i'm commuting with the roadbike but ride the geared bike when things are getting a bit "inline" or when i miss the skip and the hop (bunnyhop!). it's also the geared bike when it's raining, it get's too scary with the roadbike i hope i'll be able to get a second hand frame with horizontal dropouts (track fork) and work it from there anyone selling their mozo slalom frame? mr. threadstarter, sorry for the O.T., i hope you don't mind
