What are the plus factors for single speeders over traditional 24 or 27-speed race bikes.

could be lighter and cheaper to build, i mean no casette no derailluers no shifter no triple chain ring, shorter chain.
People who had tried my SSbikes says that its much smoother to pedal compared with my full geared bike. In which I also feel the same. easier to clean.

max,
i have to thank you and mcvarki for the thread you started in the tech section about the SS bike you started.
i wouldn't have known about that 9-to-1 converter from da bomb and other SS info.
and yea, i always use my star chrome helmet.
paging fullspeed, ang dami naghahanap nung helmet...
thanks also to wcoastbo, he advised me to consider a 42:18 drivetrain for road duties and 32:16 for off road.
i hope you get to like my "army of one" when you see it.

angela here in cebu rode away from me on our climb up to busay (ride was similar to anitpolo). i was on a 24 speed bike. lakas talaga niya nasa single speed lang siya and she was on the single speed wala pang 1 week yata

fattire
do you have 2 sets of gears?
Im kinda comfy with 32:16 for both ocassion.
did you use tensioner? Parang delikado pag walang tensioner. Kasi when the chain breaks on a trail mas mahirap magayos. The fact na mas stress ang chain ng SS bikes

@ maxbuwaya:
yes, 2 sets, was able to get an 18-teeth cog from the throw-away bin of cycle-art
tensioner? I forgot to mention that i'm using a frame with a track fork end (bmx style). instead of tensioners, chain tugs!
@ dasaint:
ang lakas ni angela! it's no small feat to hammer out of saddle on a climb using SS. you have to maintain pace, else you stop. an SS's saving grace is it's light weight, allows you to do out of saddle action far longer.

it really is hard to explain the appeal of SS mtbs. there are negatives... 1) going downhill you can only coast since I can't spin fast enough, I use 34:20 since trails here can be steep and 2:1 is too hard, 2) you can't shift to the granny gear and spin your way out of a steep section, 3) you're going "backwards" in technology
in addition to what's been said the appeal for me was 1) my same old trails here were getting boring and SS makes you change your riding style, 2) I wanted to become a stronger climber and SS is definitely strengthening my legs as well as my upper body, 3) the stare people give me when I pass them on a climb and they look to see what "gear" i'm in, 4) it cost me next to nothing to build the bike since I had most of the parts already, 5) the unexplainable good feeling of riding the SS... very Zen-like.
It's not for everyone, a friend of mine tried it for one steep hill and decided it wasn't for him. it's like beer... you won't like it till you get drunk, one sip won't be enough.
In the 4 months I've had the SS I've only ridden the f/s gearie 2 times (and it's a very nice bike). I currently prefer the SS, but ask me again in a year. It's a way to experience another form of cycling. My next project will be a fixed geared road bike.

Sirs,
Assembled a SS using my suntour middle chainring and my 9-speed cassette. The chain keeps on shifting to the next bigger gear. Im trying to minimize cost.
Any suggestions? If i get the da bomb conversion kit, do i need anything else? Is there anyway for me not to buy that conversion kit and keep the current setup.
Thanks.
NiN

I would check your chainline. It sounds like the chainline is not straight. I've build two different converted hardtails to SS and have not had any problems with the chain dropping. I do not use a tool to check my chainline, I'm just eyeballing it.
Also, are you using for a tensioner? If you are using a tensioner, is it in line with the chainring?
I've converted my hub using an old cog and PVC pipe as spacers. There is a standard PVC pipe that fits perfectly onto the cassette.
good luck. Bo

SS now working.
