to celebrate father's day with a ride (always finding a reason to ride ;D) 7 PinoyMTBiker riders (me, nhan, soloflight/raul, azto/alfred, kulot_salot/jaymz, buknoy/vic and newbie wandie1024) and 1 guest rider from batasan, ramon embarked on a shoutbox-organized ride to hilltop, norzagaray. an explo incursion to bulacan in preparation for more trailrides to the new trailriding destination.
what was planned as a halfday ride turned into a late afternoon one with so many "unforeseen" events encountered by the riders.
the posse left sandiganbayan @0630, was caught up in heavy vehicle traffic before tungko and was forced to do a lot of hike-a-bike to reach a more bikeable portion of the highway and arrived tungko a little past 8AM for that short 12km distance. we had breakfast at Chowking (again!) and just when we were about to leave, newbie-wandie1024 had a flat tire, and surprise-surprise his spare tube also has a defective "pito".
we rode the rolling hills from tungko bound for bigte but can't pace fastly to catch up for lost time because we have to take care of wandie the newbie who is celebrating his 2nd month on the saddle and the 13kms from tungko-bigte took a good 1 hour from our time. the posse already used 4 hrs for a 25km stretch (more than doubled the original time allocation) and we have just covered the rolling hills of quirino highway up to bigte.
we planned to cover the bigte to hilltop stretch in 2 hrs. (what was said to be 20 kms turned out to be +/- 30kms of about 20-25 kms uphills) but as the uphills became longer the pitstop became frequent and longer as we have to take care of our newbie rider, finally after reaching the town of san mateo after the bugarin-grade uphills from bigte, we felt that wandie has had enough (as he was now doing more walking than pedalling on the more difficult uphills) and asked him to stay behind at the sari-sari store, as we make our final uphill assault to hilltop.
on the the final assault we were welcomed by a sweet downhill from san mateo to the bridge, we made some photo ops at the bridge and marvelled at the scenic sierra madre mountain range and portions of the ipo dam and angat river, then it was time for the hilltop assault. from the security gate manned by cafgus it was all "unforgiving" uphills the grade of sierra all the way to the gate entrance to ipo dam, we have to push ourselves to the limit, which made me remember buknoy telling us that he have to turn-off his HRM as it was constantly beeping him that he had exceeded his threshold. but the company was great because even if we are almost all spent up, there seems to always be room for the laughters and sosyalan every pitstop.
finally, we reached hilltop but were not allowed entry because of security concerns by napocor security. after some carboloading (it was almost 12noon and we haven't have lunch yet) and hydration stop it's time to go down, we bombed the downhill from hilltop to the bridge, in no time at all and decided to refresh our bodies by going down the river for a dip. dip we did for 20 mins and then that final ascent back. the final push was really-really hard and we need to rest once in while everytime we feel that the legs seems to stop pedalling. on the way-up we met a "scramble" vendor and that scramble was really a refreshing way to energize us. buknoy was half-seriously offering the scramble vendor to pull the four of us up and he's willing to pay her 500 petot. little did we know that right after the next elbow, jaymz and ramon was already there enjoying their ice cold soda.
we made an uneventful descent from san mateo to bigte and was at bigte 1400 for our lunch.there waiting for us and looking fresh was wandie1024 who have decided to go down from san mateo and have his rear tires fixed somewhere in bigte. after our tuto-turo lunch of beef papaitan, binagoongan, menudo, bangus and munggo it was all time to go home. i told the posse to go ahead while i sweep wandie and so we pedalled home. other than some slowing down on uphills with wandie everything went smoothly until we reached a portion of igay(?) before tungko when on the downhill portion wandie endoed when he lost control of his bike. travelling at approx 40+kph his front tire hit a concrete crack, almost hitting the jeepney infront of him. the accident gave him a warped front wheel and abrasions on both his knees, good thing he survived that fast downhill endo. i told him that the accident will make him a better and safer rider.
we took care to dis-assemble his bike and rent a tricycle to bring him to the nearest bus station bound for philcoa where he can take a taxi for home.
after that traffic portion in tungko and with our cellphones having a lot of messages and miss calls from the missus and almost 1600H, we felt that it was time to end the father's day ride and took a jeepney bound for philcoa.
at the jeepney it was all jokes, jokes and jokes as if we didn't underwent a day of punishment. a PinoyMTBiker ride always ends that way.......with lots of laughter ;D ;D ;D
wandie1024........hope to ride with you again brad after you have licked your wound, we hope that you'll invest more saddle time to cover and enjoy the whole ride itinerary with stronger legs and lungs. and ride safe next time brad.

wow ...what a reportage...what a day to ride!!! three-words came to mind after i finished reading: NOT FOR NEWBIES! what a way to "celebrate" Father's Day...by inflicting pain after pain on your dear selves!!! but i think it was all worth it...especially the "skrambol" and river dip parts. ;D but it's great to find out that did an excellent job in taking very good care of wandie. to all newbies out there, this is clear proof that in PinoyMTBiker rides, there's always someone who will help you out and be as patient as they can...all for your benefit/improvement! hats off to you, guys! @wandie - i also experienced a fast downhill endo...but not on concrete! sir arci is right...that mishap will make you a better and safer rider (like what that proverb says: That which does not kill you...will make you stronger). you'll really learn a lot after that.

seniors, i thought i'll never make it to the top after some right chest pain i've felt during uphill. all i can do is to listen to the sound of crickets to divert the pain and hug the nature's gift, the fresh air and the beautiful scenery. our pics to follow... thanks for waiting. hope you enjoy the photo/video.
