june 10, 2007. sunday. alphabolt (arnet), fattire (owen), me, paul (freeman), raul and jay went to sitio karahome, home to licao licao's newly discovered DH track. it has a mild slope and is bikable (for me) 30% of the way up. but that would entail numerous dismounts so pushing your bikes is the norm even if you have an XC bike. takes 45 minutes going up by foot, pushing your bike. but you can hire a porter to do the pushing for you. that cuts the time to 30mins. P50 for a porter to push your bike up the top of the hill. here's some pics: there are times you can do this. but you can always do this. and then some more. at the top. me paul raul arnel owen happy after heat 1. and then heat 2, this happened. ironic but my firt heat was better. sucks to be me. thank god nothing serious and no face plants at this point, hehe. ate lunch at a nearby sari sari store. we asked them to cook rice and even ginisang sardines. arnel happens to bring along some canned food as well. thanks arnel going home. i'd like to thank arnel for the van and food and for everything else. love you so much brad, hehe. ;D

june 16, 2007. saturday fun race at Sitio Karahome AKA Licao Licao's DH track. organized by john wilkie. this would be my first time to join a DH race. a stopwatch will be used to determine how fast you are. time keepers at the foot of hill will call (via the cellfone) the time keeper at the hill top. countdown will be heard via the cellphone and you'll be released. time stops when you get to the bottom. here's arnel hiking up the trail. his bike is already at the top. stock pile of bikes at the top. here's paul freeman on a DH rig and suit. arnel lent his azonic DH rig for this one. paul got to the bottom at 5 minutes 30 seconds with no spills. left to right: banz mendoza (DH god), arnel alphabolt (DH funracer), me (DH wannabe, hehehe). arnel finished with a time of 6 minutes ++ seconds (forgot the time. hopefully somebody from john wilkie will post the results). i finished 6 minutes 24 seconds. both me and arnel had a spill. arnel's handle bar was apparently loose so he was like pointing his handle bar a couple of degrees off to compensate, just to finish the course. i on the other hand had a face plant. i was on my shawn H2 with a newly upgraded RS revelation, hehe (as if it made a difference, hehehe). thank you arnel for the helmet and for everything else (transpo, mangoes, etc.) thanks to john wilkie's bikeshop for organizing this event. i learned a lot from this race. DH is more mental than physical come race day. everything is fast, everything is different, when you want to bring yourself to a different level. but the thing is, you need to relax. and that's what i missed. i overshot a turn and oversteered which made me do a faceplant. thanking arnel a million times over. without his helmet, this crash would be the crash of all crashes for me when it comes to injuries. but it was my worst crash ever. at the moment, my chest, ribs are bruised and my left middle finger is bloated (namamaga). had to cancel my participation to scout the race course this sunday at batangas for the EBD race. bummer. will pray my injuries heal and i dont get lost in the race on the 24th. hehe. ;D thanks for viewing.

heyhey hey Jon! Cool pics and narration ... It was my honor and sadistic pleasure to have opened the darkside to you, chairman Owen and Raul ..and to a lesser extent [coz he s a go-down-anywhere kinda guy] to Paul. It really takes a DH bike with 6-8 inches of travel to do real downhilling / bombing. Anything less than 6 inches travel will slow you down as you cant make "Sagasa" the trail and "tuhog" the nosedive sections (assumptionista po heheh) Folks, the hike up the Licao DHtrail was done by Jon and Paul in 30 minutes only ! us lesser non-mountaineer folks did it in ummm 39 minutes Bombing down would have taken about 5-6 minutes ... The Funrace day was a big mistake for me...I didnt like the 8-inch travel 888 fork on my azonic bike the last time we practiced [couldnt steer it well...hayyyy] so I rushed BongL the mech the eve before the race and we installed my SuperT 7-incher fork ...and he forgot to do the final "torque tightening" of the stem ...and I forgot to check it So come raceday, the stem was loose ...good thing Paul is such a smooth rider that he didnt bang it around the trail and was safe ...cleared the course in 5'30" (wow thats fast for a beginner...my best time would be around that time) I on the other hand semplanged (spilled/crashed/endoed) : 1 major endo + 1 180deg swerve...I crashed into the kangkongan of one of the many canals post switchback... my front wheel wasnt tracking well and I should have bailed and DNFed but I dont like quitting [must be the low IQ hehehe] finished the course about 6 minutes 4 secs with my handle bar facing right about 10 deg with the wheel at 12oclock gross negligence... learned my lesson: dont rush a setup + triple check your torques DH = where you can feel like a crashtest dummy and end up laughing afterwards ;D Til the next steep ride, Crossriders!

Hey Arnel, this is kinda off-topic but is related to Downhillin though. Went to Tags this morning and hit Ridge 3, then we went to B10 (did i get it right?) Anyway, good thing my talas survived bombing/walking down B10. Btw, aren't you planning on disposing of the SC?

Anyway, good thing my talas survived bombing/walking down B10. Btw, aren't you planning on disposing of the SC? Hey Raul! we missed you yesterday! Ridge 3 or Peak 3 is a super fast trail ... be careful in bombing down that area...I personally think that the fast smooth trails deceive riders and make them make the mistake of not using brakes and proper lines well enough ...lotsa riders get hurt at P3 coz they overshoot the turns and crash Biten (spelled sumthin like this...but others would know the real spelling ) ...I only rode it twice...we prefer Ridge 2 coz it provides better obstacles and has longer sections with all the nasties thrown at ya ;D See you soon ... and I m still thinking about the SC ;D

thanks for the comments guys.
being with arnel is contagious and its easy to give in. he's very accomodating and encouraging. just like our DH bros during the race.
hope you guys visit the track. in my opinion, its a newbie friendly track due to its gentle slope and and occassional 1-foot stairs. being fast though is a different story. when speed is the game, lets leave it up to our DH bros. joey barba was super fast at 3 mins 30 secs. faster than fast, hehe. ;D

I need to see the internals first, just to be sure. sorry Alphabolt, i wasn't able to join the race, i was busy building on a new project in PEYUPS.... se you next week, i still need to build that step up before race day comes. and berms too....

Sino pwede makasabay this weekend? (Padyak lang)We went to Licao-licao last sunday to try to find the DH trail and asked around. The jeepney and tricycle drivers pointed us at the general direction of Helipad. Well, to cut the story short, we didnt find the DH trail and ended up heading towards helipad and descending from there. brad, its very easy to find.... Just follow the concrete road from the Licao terminal...it goes down d ba.... then at the end of that concrete road turn right down a single lane rocky road...head down... turn right at the fork with the house at the middle...then keep left straight into the sitio when you see a huge concrete water tank..you re there

However, one of the riders we were with insisted on following their directions. Too bad you posted this too late, as we could've asked sitio karahome. Thanks alphabolt, mountguitars.
