Okay. so we all hear this word so often from bmxers... skateboarders...even punk rockers...
Poser.
The very word itself strikes fear into the heart of every mountainbiker... That morbid fear of being labeled as one is enough justification, it seems, to commit seppuku.
This isn't limited to Dh and Fr riding however since there are plenty of posers in the Xc arena as well.
But really, how to detect the Poser amongst the Riders?
As a certain character of the first Pirates of the Carribbean film says:
"They're not exactly rules... more like guidelines."
1. Has a penchant for covering every inch and I do mean EVERY INCH of his bike (fork, frame, and I've seen some even cover the rims) with 3M bathtub tape.
2. Rides a really snazzy bike with a ton of spacers under the stem.
3. Builds an obscenely-expensive Dh/Xc bike and uses it once a week/month to hang around the MOA area and then goes to a shop the next day to replace the fork, saying he's not content with the damping/compression... blah blah blah.
4. Always has a new item hanging on his bike... but doesn't fully understand the need nor the reason for the upgrade.
"Pare, ang ganda ng bagong crankset mo ah. Pinapagaan mo ba ang bike mo? Mas malakas bang isipa?"
"Uh... dehins.. Maganda kasing tingnan dahil bagay iyong kulay sa seatclamp ng frame ko."
5. Buys three pairs of use-specific tires because they look good while inflated.
"Extendead: Sam, naubos na ba iyong Minion 2.35?"
"Sam: Wala na. May bumili ng anim kanina."
"Extendead: @##$$^$%^^!!!!!"
6. Has a tendency to glean information from the net and actually expound on it even though he hasn't experienced it yet. Kaya nga poser, di ba?
7. Applies to the Dh bike poser: Can hardly lift his own bike and load it onto the pickup. I'm not sure if they can switch out their own tires. Please do inform me of further developments.
8. Applies to the Xc bike poser: Has a tendency to concoct tales of heroic climbs during the weekend but has no tan lines on his arms, hands, and legs. And yet has hardly any musculature on his calves and thighs.
"Pare.. alam mo ba doon sa Wall? Tinuhog ko si-------, at pagkatapos ay niratrat namin kasabay si-------!"
9. Applies to both Xc and Dh poser... but more for the Dh: Has a tendency to concoct tales of breakneck descents during the weekend... but when further research is done, the so-called "descent" is just a dip where tricycles ply their routes.
"Pare, ang lupit ng lusong doon sa-----!"
"Teka, pedicab ba iyong lumampas sa atin?"
10. Applies to Dh poser: Wears knee/shin guards, elbow pads, even body armor sometimes, and a full-face helmet.... while puttering around Quirino Avenue at 5 kph.
Feel free to add more and even send me some hatemail.

@ Extendead,
Ah no. We all have the right to flex our muscles and show our toothy smiles with our bikes. hehehe. Refer to the post about Rocketman "posing" for pictures.

does commuting with his bike while going to work with a full-face helmet count as being a poser?

@ Pao,
This is an exceptional case... since the protection warranted by the deadly streets of the Philippines even justifies a bulletproof vest... and if you commute at a speed higher than 20 kph... then I'd say that commuting while clad in a fullface helmet is not "posing" per se. Some people would probably just view it as unusual.

hmmm........... if the idea of a full-face is for protection.. then that is just fine... BUT.. to wear it just to look good... hmmmm i think that is posing??? what you think my friend??
ok lang mag full-face kahit na giro switch blade or kung ano mas luma pa yan eh sa kung natatakot ka dahil gwapo ka eh why not!!! kaysa naman naka troy lee or madmax ka nga para ka lang cute!!
di ba??

hehe! I use my DH rig kasi sometimes when I go to work. I also use my FF helmet since I hit mini-DH trails and stairs before going to work (maximizing my time for practice). FF helmet for head protection and as a basher sa mga loko-loko... hehe! ;D

In that case, you are perfectly justified in fullface helmet usage. Hehehe.

the people who trained me once called me a poser......
...... good thing i proved them wrong for almost a decade and a half!
i just love to ride alam nyo yun, when i grew around the habit i just had fun with my bike on the trail. Didnt matter who, where, how, why and what the f**k am i doing with my life!
i was havin the time of my life......... and i still am!
the way i see it....... sabi ni yetiman " full dh bomber, totally out of control"...... why worry if your enjoying? ahehehehe......
but when i first met joseph o. ... he told me ok na set-up bike mo ensayo at exposure lang kulang mo............. and so i studied and learned from all of their riding styles....
i can mention names of pro riders blah blah... and i would not even care what they say about me.... wana know why? i made my mark on my own turf and my own time..... everybody has theirs..... we all know that........
im not as fast as most of them well i was... but im workin hard at the moment to get back on track and slug it out with the pros again.....( after pro i went semi pro then -pro then vanished!hahahahahahahha)... but what separates us from each other is we all have our distinctive talents and skills that distinguishes us amongst ourselves. From that distintictive talent we learn to respect and fear each other as equals on the track and off the track we set aside the factions and politics and just get down to the core of pushing limits and enjoying riding at breakneck progressions!

one thing i learned bout bragging rights is bein able to drag both your balls inside the game and givin your talk the walk, i still feel like a poser tho after a decade and a half.
I have a lot more to do.... and a lot more boundaries to break! and minds to open and talents to discover....... nuthin is too late.....im still here after 15 yrs and most likely still present after 10 more!..........
** but i'd have to agree with santino and gtu tho.....
remember back in 04' when PinoyMTBiker was new? who the fk is budbender? sino ba yan poser na maingay na yan? ......... ummmm he elevated the boundaries of what was normal and not! hahahahahahhaha.................. i was notorious even before PinoyMTBiker, i made my mark on dh mtbiking......... i didnt need to prove squat to no one! why? i was an ex-poser pushed to the limits and trained by multiple legendary riders........ i evolved from poser to proven to legend..
and lets just keep it that way! hahahahahha....... tama si santino! hahahahhaah

@ pao .... brad.. bein different and strange doesnt make you a poser i actually admire and hail you for your efforts towards improving your talents and managing your time, you ask me questions and i know i've given you the correct and proper answers.... cuz i see your initiative to push yourself and go the whole 30 yards! ...... if only they share the passion you put into riding that bike into oblivion would bee seen and shared ...... gee!
** just dont go urban riding on DH pants , body armor and goggles(no helmet ha!) ...thats fuckin ridiculous man!.............
** and pls if you plan to use your DH bike fer just goin around moa in circles? get a roadbike dufus! dont be a dumb ass poser......... it aint cute! to the people who understand dh yer just makin us look bad and DUMB!!! if i see you there i'll prolly run you over with my truck.... then haul your corpse to the breakwater and throw you with your dumb-ass poser bike....... cuz i can!

1. Has a penchant for covering every inch and I do mean EVERY INCH of his bike (fork, frame, and I've seen some even cover the rims) with 3M bathtub tape.
is there somebody doing this, hhmmmm.. i curious.. haven't seen.. hehehe
2. Rides a really snazzy bike with a ton of spacers under the stem.
-oh, i've seen a lot of them...glad i dont have any spacer.. above the stem lng.. saving the steering not to cut too much
4. Always has a new item hanging on his bike... but doesn't fully understand the need nor the reason for the upgrade.
-oh i guess i'm one of them... hahahaha...
5. Buys three pairs of use-specific tires because they look good while inflated.
-oh... again, i like to choose cute tires when inflated (even not specific to my riding style)... hehehe.. but i can only aford 2 pcs lng.
7. Applies to the Dh bike poser: Can hardly lift his own bike and load it onto the pickup. I'm not sure if they can switch out their own tires. Please do inform me of further developments.
-nah... i dont have pickup! ;D
8. Applies to the Xc bike poser: Has a tendency to concoct tales of heroic climbs during the weekend but has no tan lines on his arms, hands, and legs. And yet has hardly any musculature on his calves and thighs.
hmmmm.... im always at the back in each uphill ride(huli always)... i just smile and said.. "pu#@$#%ng uphill na yun!"
10. Applies to Dh poser: Wears knee/shin guards, elbow pads, even body armor sometimes, and a full-face helmet.... while puttering around Quirino Avenue at 5 kph.
got no fullface and pads & guards eh... hehehe

hahahah.... santino this thread is like a bag of dogpoop with a stick o' dynamite! If this explodes the casualties will be tremendous! hahahahahah.......
guys i didnt know spacers could help adjust handlebar height/angle? alam ko if you put the spacer on top of the headset and clamp it down with the stem eh your ganna fk up your headset and flex the steerer tube? ....
.... cuz if i was a certified bike tech i would adjust your handlebar height by advising you to get a longer n taller fork.... if its handlebar angle ... ho bout getting fit-specific stems? 25mm @ 15 degrees? sumthin like that..... spacers are used on top of the stem! if you dont want to cut the steerer! just get used to getting ribbed-jam by the protruding steerer tube( aray sakit nyan! hahahahahah)........
wag kasi kayo nagpapagawa ng bike sa mekaniko ng sidecar! puta DH bike yan.... it needs a DH bike mekanik! (sinabi ni hermie yan sakin! ng pasigaw! kasi tama sya! ahhahahaha)

going to the right mechanic is one of the best move you can do...

oceanrider88-using FFH helmet for XC is ok but you might find it uncomfortable and others might find it odd, if you really wanna use FFH try to look for Switchblade FFH, its in-between FFH and XC helmet, some of my friends use it for DH and XC, safe ride brad
