The mallet has better traction when you're riding unclipped. More secure clip in too. But harder to clip out, esp. when in a hurry. Speedgoat.com sells "shaved" cleats supposedly allowing more float and easire clip out.
The shimano has spring tension adjustment AND you can use multi-release cleats. If you're likely to need a quick bail-out, the shimano dx are better. I prefer the Shimano.

when using flat clip in pedals......learn to dedicate & instinctly attached......if not time hard is ur personal problem......flat clip in pedals should be always riders choice..... shimano very good product but wont last long no good also in muddy......years of using this product but i shift......now im using mallet c......no problem in mud......i can easily bail out anytime i want......set-up 20degrees (hard release set-up)......the only problem is the cleat 'medyo madaling mapudpod' after a year of usage in dh racing......im planning to fab it into steel cleat......watch out
