just a thought,
Do we really need 8 inch rotor in the rear for downhilling?
;Das far as i know it's the front disc brake that can stop us at speeds, on downhill. and mostly used over the rear.
better heat dissipation? any scientific explanation, or just bling to look good 8 rotors front and rear
;D im keeping my 6 inch center lock saint rotor in my rear on my dh bike hehehe, unless otherwise,
no probelms so far, cant even feel the difference, over an 8 inch rotor.
saves weight, minus 2 bolts and the 8 inch adaptor.
what's your opinion?

6 inchers should do fine at the rear as the basic rule of stopping power distribution is 75% front and 25% at back. so for utmost control it is the front wheel that needs the larger braking surface and leverage (diameter).
Having an 8 incher at back wouldn't hurt, do remember that if your riding style makes use of rear end modulation more then more powerful brakes out back might give you a better sense of control. Though in most situtations if you really need to come to a screeeeching halt then the front discs would have to do that job especially downhill but I don't think you would want to to that.

ako rin been using 6" rotors in the rear for more than 4 years now, and i had no problems with stopping. im using a deore hydraulic. recently, last month, i switched to an 8" rotor in the rear (to match my front) and suprisingly ive noticed a significant difference... my 6" was enough to stop my fat arse on dh trails, I could always lock them if i wanted to but when I switched to 8" rotors, it just felt more right... i could modulate the rear better and it was stronger than the 6" making 1 finger braking possible... i was two-finger braking with my 6".
bottomline is... i feel more confident w/ my new 8" than my 6". but if i had to pay for the upgrade, I probably wouldnt have switched. the 8" rotor was only given to me along w an adaptor. Id rather spend my 1.8K-2K on other parts...

They both (8in) have greater stopping power when it comes to DH. Its only the rider preferences of what he want to use. It might be 8in in the front and 7in in the rear, or 8in front and 6in rear. For me, larger diameter give more advantage than small dia. Well if the riders are weight concious then they can go for small dia. Its their choices.

8" in front and 7" in the rear.... front brake are used for stopping while the rear brake is use for controlling the bike...

@ PraeTorian -that's right! the greater the rotor diameter the greater the stopping force. we dont want to have our momentum to die on the rear wheel, di ba (right), coz it will require more pedaling to regain the momentum lost.

As long as your rear brake is functioning well there's no need to be upset about it. I'm using a 6'' rotor rear and 8" rotor front Shimano Deore br-m555 hydraulic brakes and it's like a power brake when you press on the lever it'll stop at once with lesser skidmark. On the other hand, once i get my commission from my boss i'm gunning for the Shimano Saint coz i've tried Praetorian's bike it has Saint on it and it halts even better than Deore hydro. Or else i'll buy the 2007 Avid Code four-piston two-piece caliper,three cartridge bearing on the lever. What i heard from Randall who owns a bike shop the Avid Code is up for p18,000 which is double the price of a Shimano Saint. Why not if you really want the ultimate stopping power of a brake system that will make you happy and satisfied.

I have 8" rotors front & back - OEM with the bike. But I did use 7" front & back w/ my Heckler before & it was still okay for DH. I guess if the technology's there, why not use it?
