why do "they" (pro dhillers) use road cassete/sprockets as their drivetrain set up on their DH bikes?
obviuosly not for climbing, but road cassettes are for climbing? and have different gearing compared to a mtb cassette/sprocket.
what are the pros and cons?
is it tall gearing even using smaller chain rings (42, 40, 38) for quick acceleration.
shortens your chain to reduce chain slap?
construction wise (spider, riveted etc..)which is stronger, lighter road or mtb sprockets?
enlighten me, hehehe, I am still keeping my 11-32 XT on my dh bike

Ive came accross a topic like this somewhere, they enumerated the pros and cons.
Bottom line best to use MTB cogs because the increment of the casette is larger, meaning if you loose momentum on one shift then you are far nearer the optimum gear ratio than with a road cog. You have to shift 3x with a road cog to get as much.
If you shift on a faster combination then your up 3-4T on MTB than 1T with a road cog.
Road cogs btw have number of teeth much closer than each other ie 1T difference.

k im convinced now, still stick to a mtb sprocket, because gear ratios is more efficient. when down shifting.
just wondering why they are using it even if its not efficient.
Once i used a road sprocket for testing, I don't like it, Im not used to, it's hard to pedal, maybe u need lots of training, like a pro to pedal that drivetrain.
>jong i will join this sat, where in taytay? what kind of trail?
>earth 3 is not (garbled) euro accent is k on my player, must be the dvd player of bans hehehehe, nice race video.

Because they can.... ;D
I've seen some local pro downhillers even using a combination of road & mtb derailleurs. Main body is Shimano XT but the cage is from an ultegra/dura-ace... So they have a short cage XT...
So they get the benefits of running lighter MTB cassettes but having a very shorter cage (road) which has lesser chances of getting banged up in the trail...

BTW you can also use road RD for MTB casettes.

local DH riders have been using this since 96' .....oooops
sowweeee......... u guys havent been here that long.... DHers and freeriders have been known to innovate n integrate..... thats why some mtb parts specs are a bit closer to a few of the Road n XC parts.......... (i think manufacturers call them R&D.........DUH?)
haaayz.................

while waiting for the bus ride for laoag at cubao PARTAS bus station,
I saw that hybrid derailleur, on mike borja's (bronze medalist mtb dh sea games) intense VPX,
its a mtb derailleur, with a short road cage, "another pinoy rider innovation".
I ask him how its done, mike borja said the cage can be dismantled from the derailleur body there's a spring, etc... its a matter of swapping the cage to the derailleur body.
have not yet done it, of course you need to have one mtb and one road derailleur.
On my dh bike, Im using XT medium cage, on a 11-32 9 speed XT sprocket. easy to pedal with a 170 mm crank 40 or 42 t chain ring.
mtb derailleurs with medium cage is hard to find.
yes buddy,
more XC and road bike parts on a dh race bike for weight reduction,
